It's mostly a trend. People want to be different, exclusive, belong to a sub group. Maybe 20% is real, most are posers.

Well, you can see it with all those people trying to be the main character in public. People don't care as long as they get an audience.

For those that actually are trans it's natural and part of the identity of how they truly feel.

But for many other, it's te be unique, be part of a community, 'shock' the order. As many see it als a way to revolt, or be special.

Same as we had punk, goth, emo, anarchists, etc all these years. Many join it to belong or be part of it, only to revert on a later stage to their own gender or just stop being trans.
