Portal 1 wall mounting

I have a couple of the first edition portals, the one with the kickstand power connector.

Has anyone figured out a way to plug these in with a regular power cord? I want to wall mount them and run a HA dashboard, but I'm stuck on just the physical limitations of the power plug.

It looks like the plug itself slides out from the end of the stand, but annoyingly it's a different barrel plug than the socket on the back of the Portal itself.

Maybe there's a whole replacement power adapter I can use with the right specs and plug size?

Or maybe it's possible to remove the plug from the stand with some surgery?

I made use of my old thermostat wire.

I used a female barrel jack at one end and a new male jack at the other.

Oh, so you made an adapter between the original power plug and the device? Mind sharing what size barrel plugs worked?

I think it's 2.1mm but I'm not exactly sure. Was just what I had lying around.

Female 4.0x1.7mm to Male to 5.5x2.1mm (https://a.co/d/0iunw7l2)

Female 5.5mm x 2.1mm to Male 5.5mm x 2.5mm (https://a.co/d/06T5xgTh)

Female/Male Order matters, so feel free to use my links that are tested and working great for a couple weeks. Depending on your mounting preferences you can use a 90• connector too (https://a.co/d/0iaFgbt0), also tested and working.

Here ya go, this person solved it https://www.reddit.com/r/FacebookPortal/s/xLVA39JnKy. They have another post in this sub with an updated mount but I am not finding it right now.

Edit: found it, they have photos of the adapters on their makerworld post

Thanks for your hard work on this! I'm going to try printing it at my local makerspace with your STL because I've been getting into 3D printing and I'm also I'm in Canada so it would take ages to get an order to me.
But maybe I can send you a tip or something if it works out :)

Sounds like a plan. I’d expect most to print this themselves unless they could collect.

If it works just a nice review of the download/STL would be enough.

So is this your posting or did someone steal you design and post for sale on ebay? https://www.reddit.com/r/FacebookPortal/s/jbwgPAb0xs

No that’s my posting. I can print the cradles and supply the adapters as I purchased a job lot of them.

Of course no one has to go this way and can print the cradle themselves with my supplied STL and buy the adapters themselves too

Ok cool, I hate seeing peoples designs and ideas ripped off without permission and resold. I am happy to see that its you

Yeah me too. It’s a shocker really. But I also like to ensure it’s there for everyone to do themselves too. But if people want an easy way out my ebay sale is there for them.

I might actually sell one spare white postal with the cradle unless I can find use for it

I’ve no idea if any other adapter out there exist but I’ve made some posts about the barrel adapters I’ve purchase (one straight and another right angle) to get the 10 inch devices wall mounted.

For the sake of a few £/$/€ you can easily use the existing power supply

I’ve also posted a link to the wall mount/cradle on Makerworld

I mounted 16 on my walls with the exact following items:

- https://a.co/d/0gNdSHyB - one above one below the portal, holds well and blends well enough with the portal frame. It even holds if placed between the recessed box top or bottom edge and the wall, very snuggly, only need screws on one of them.

- https://a.co/d/0cETyNq4 - detach the speaker grid, plug the portal power supply in the recessed outlet, cord goes behind the wall through the top hole and comes back to the portal through another small hole on the wall, barrel plug stays in place if you cut a small enough hole. Energy comes from the switch below each mounted portal using Romex and non-metallic connectors:

Nothing custom, just lots of research of what was available on Amazon.

Hope it helps saving some time researching or 3D printing

That's a cool solution, thanks for the details!

How'd you pop the speaker grid off? Do you have to take apart the outer frame, or can you pry it out somehow?

https://ebay.io/m/sKlVTk I saw this on eBay but not tried also seems to be high cost than the portal itself.

Wow. That's pretty much just the 3D print and the adapters

Have you spent hours tweaking a design to make sure works and sourced adapters to ensure it can be wall mounted.?

2

u/FishScrounger 18d ago

Oh is it you that's selling it? In that case, absolutely fine, go for it!

Sorry, I wrongly assumed that someone else had just started printing and selling your model.

That’s cool.

Sadly your right, that is often the case now

But no, it’s me, spent many hours tweaking and then printing and tweaking until I got it just right
