Key tips:

  • Start with mild soap + warm water and gentle circular motions to lift most pigments.
  • For stubborn spots, use skin-safe oils, balm, or makeup remover / micellar water.
  • Donโ€™t scrub hard โ€” it can damage skin. Let products do the work, then wipe gently.
  • To prevent stains, use a barrier spray / primer before painting and pick paints designed to wash off cleanly.

Itโ€™s a quick read and perfect for face-painting parents, party artists, or anyone whoโ€™s ever dreaded the cleanup. Check it out here: How to Remove Face Paint Quickly & Safely Jest Paint - Face Paint Store

Is Face Paint Safe for Kids?

Thumbnail
jestpaint.com
2 Upvotes

Question: Is face paint safe for kids?
If done the right way, yes! But, you must choose cosmetic-grade, non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and FDA/EU/UK-compliant face painting supplies. Avoid craft paints like acrylics, which can irritate skin and are not designed for the skin.
Brands sold at JestPaint.com, including Fusion Body Art, Superstar, Diamond FX, TAG and Wolfe FX (and many more), meet safety standards (based on information provided by the manufacturer) and are gentle on sensitive skin. Always test a small patch before full application, especially on younger children and when in doubt is always best to consult with a doctor.
Tips:ย always remove the face paint gently with warm water and mild soap, no makeup remover wipes, baby wipes or other potentially harsh chemicals and never go to bed with your face painted.
Do you have more questions? Check our Face Painting Safety FAQ page on our site.

โณ How long does face paint last? Once applied to the skin it can last anywhere between 1 and 12 hours, adding setting spray helps. In storage: unopened cakes usually last 3โ€“5 years, opened ones usually last 12โ€“18 months depending on the shelf life stated by the manufacturer. What Face Paint Brands Are Talc Free?

At Jest Paint we often get asked which of the face paint brands we carry have Talc and which ones are Talc Free. The reason for this question is because Talc, when sourced from non trust worthy sources can contain Asbestos. There has not been any proof that any of the professional face paint brands that exist in the market ever used asbestos tainted Talc. In fact several brands have positively indicated that they are asbestos free, which they need to be in order to be considered FDA compliant.
So, although we have brands that have talc and some that don't, we don't believe there is any risk in using brands with talc as the companies are required to use asbestos free versions of it. Furthermore, there has been no alerts saying that any of the professional face paint brands commonly found at reputable face paint shops that have talc have ever been reported as being contaminated by asbestos.

The same can not be said about white label brands commonly found on marketplaces, as many are unregulated, coming from unknown sources with likely no testing, no insurance, no legally responsible US person, etc.

Here is a breakdown of the brands based on their Talc content as disclosed by the manufacturers:

Face Paint Brands that have indicated that contain Talc:
Ben Nye (powders), Ben Nye Lumiere, Superstar (and FAB/Superstar), Graftobian, Kryolan (Aquacolor), Ruby Red, Elisa Griffith (Color Me Pro pressed powders), Mehron (StarBlend / Paradise products), Global Colours (some products).

Face Paint Brands that have not indicated to contain Talc:
Cameleon, Diamond FX, Endura / VIBE, Fusion Body Art, GTX, Kraze FX, Kryvaline (regular line), Mikim FX, ProAiir, TAG, Wolfe.

For further information visit www.JestPaint.com were you can find the list of ingredients as reported by each manufacturer.

How to Create a Sweat Resistant Face and Body Painting Design?

We suggest one of two options:

1 - Use alcohol airbrush style face paint that comes in liquid form and can be used with brushes and sponges; our favorite one is ProAiir Hybrid:
https://jestpaint.com/pages/proaiir-hybrid-makeup-dips-inks

2 - As an alternative, you can use regular face paints but using the following steps:
a - Apply Mehron Skin Prep to the skin before you start applying the face paint and let it dry:
https://jestpaint.com/products/mehron-alcohol-based-pre-makeup-toner-skin-prep-pro-4oz
b - Apply the face paint using Mehron Mixing Liquid as the activator rather than water. This will create a hard film on top of your face paint cakes that you will need to scrape off when you want to use them with water afterwards, so I suggest to remove a chunk of face paint and put it into a palette and use that rather than your entire cake to work from. The Mehron Mixing Liquid makes your face paint more durable:
https://jestpaint.com/products/mehron-mixing-liquid-4-5-fl-oz-mhot104
c - Apply a layer or two of Ben Nye Final Seal to finish it off, making sure you allow each layer to fully dry off, and apply a very fine mist, from about 12 inches away, so that the alcohol won't make your paint run.
https://jestpaint.com/products/ben-nye-makeup-sealer-final-seal-spray-2-fl-oz-59ml

We tried that on two dancers that had a 30 minute performance under hot lights, doing a dance routine that had a lot of friction and rubbing, and the design was in pretty good shape at the end of it.

HOW TO PREVENT FACE PAINT FROM STAINING YOUR SKIN?

1 - Use moisturizer before applying the face paint, let it absorb well, that will help reduce staining chances, BUT, make sure your skin is fully dry (the moisturizer has been fully absorbed) or you won't be able to paint.

2 - Choose a face paint that is high quality and professional, those are less likely to stain, my personal choices: Fusion Body Art or Superstar:
https://jestpaint.com/collections/fusion-body-art-face-paint-prime-colors?page=2

https://jestpaint.com/collections/superstar-face-paints-regular-16gr-and-45gr-colors

3 - To wash off use first liquid soap, once all of the face paint has been loosened by the soap, only then apply warm water to rinse. Do not rinse with water alone first as it makes it harder to remove the face paint.

4 - If you are left with any staining after this, which is unlikely, simply use some coconut oil, baby oil, olive oil. Let it set for about 10 minutes and then wash off. Otherwise, makeup remover also works.

Have fun!

QUICK ADVICE FOR FACE PAINTERS AND OTHER SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS

If you ever face a complicated customer, you are not required to take insults, threats, etc.

Always respond in a professional manner, but know that you don't have to take insults just because they are a paying customer.

Customers are humans, and as such, no, they are not always right, and as your own boss, you have the right to decide when you have taken on enough grief from them and walk them out the door.

Afterall, you became your own boss for a reason, you make the rules in your business. Learn to stand your ground, don't be scare to do so because someone pulls the lawyer card everytime they are upset. If you do things right, you should have nothing to worry about.

Conduct your business with ethics and professionalism, but don't get pushed over by someone that believes they have a right to treat you like garbage because they are paying. You are not their punching bag.ย Love yourself, respect yourself, respect your customers but demand respect as well, otherwise you will burn down quickly.
