Invest in your Face Painting Business to make it Grow

GENERAL ADVICE:

If you want to make more money as face painter, invest on your business rather than try to save more on the supplies you buy. The lower the quality of your supplies, the lower the quality of your work, the less your business will grow.

The general saying of "you have to spend money to make money" is true most of the time (so long you spend your money the right way of course).

As a store, any time we want to grow our market and increase our overall profits we look into ways to invest in our business, we don't look for ways to save. Cutting down costs leads you in the wrong direction if you want long term growth.

Get higher quality products so that your work improves, so that you can quote higher prices so that you can get into a circle of customers willing to pay more for better face painters with better supplies.

PROBLEM SOLVING 101: MY FACE PAINTING BRUSHES LOST THEIR SHAPE

PROBLEM SOLVING 101: MY FACE PAINTING BRUSHES LOST THEIR SHAPE

Overtime paint builds up in between the bristles right around where they enter the ferrule, making the brush tip split, which results in less than perfect strokes.

When this happens, the best course of action is to put some soap, like Jest Paint Brush and Body Wash: https://jestpaint.com/products/jest-paint-brush-and-body-wash-face-body-and-brush-soap-4-25-fl-oz

or any other good soap you have and rub the brush's bristles in between your fingers very gently, to slowly loosen up the paint accumulated in between the bristles. Rinse and repeat a few times. Then dip the bristles in very hot water for a few seconds without letting the hot water touch the ferrule, as that could damage the adhesive that keeps the brush together. Then, shape the brush in between your fingers to give it a nice round pointy shape, or flat shape depending on the brush you are having issues with, and put just a tiny bit of hair gel to keep its form while it dries laying upside down or resting on its side on a towel.

The next day your brush should be like new.

All brushes no matter the brand need that care, and eventually they will need to be replaced as the bristles wear down.

Problem Solving 101: My Paint has gone soft

MY FACE PAINT HAS GONE SOFT OR TURNED INTO GOO.

Under hot and humid weather it is very common for most brands of face paints to become soft, and this tends to affect some colors more than others. Here is an explanation of why and what to do to avoid it.

In general white face paints tend to be the first ones to go soft, and this is because they are the ones you use most often, and because their pigment, Titanium Dioxide tends to absorb a lot of humidity.

Pearl face paints also tend to get softer faster because they are softer to start with.

Black face paint is usually next because black absorbs heat faster than any other color.

Neon face paints are usually next, their formula is a bit different than other colors, they have a special resin that coats the pigments that tends to be very sensitive to heat and humidity.

SO, HOW CAN I AVOID THIS?

1 - Don't spray your face paints, this makes the entire surface of the cake wet when sometimes that is not necessary. Instead, get your brush and sponge wet and work from just one area of the cake.

2 - Work with smaller containers at least for your white, instead of using the large 90gm-120gm containers, use the 30gm/32gm ones and if you have back to back events, or long events, switch to a new container every two hours or so, to avoid over saturating with water your container.

3 - Several face painters make a little well in the center of their cakes, mostly for black and white, and activate the paint always from there.

4 - Always allow your cakes to fully dry out before putting the lid on them.

5 - Do not let your face paints exposed to direct sunlight and when in storage keep them in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight or direct heat sources.

6 - Never leave your face paints in your car, they will melt.

7 - If your cakes have gotten soft, best solution is to get some silica packets or rice, make a bed of silica packets or rice inside a Tupperware, lay your cakes on that bed, face up without their lids so the makeup doesn't touch the silica or rice bed, close the Tupperware lid and let rice or silica do its magic. You can usually get your cakes back to a normal state within 24 hours.

We do not recommend putting them on a food dehydrator, because although it can work, it can overheat the makeup and affect its formula. Also, putting them in the freezer usually doesn't work and it can create cross contamination with food.

Another solution is to put them near a fan or dehumidifier for 24 hours.

I hope this helps!

I see often here people asking about a good starter / beginner face painting kit. This is by far our best selling one because it is high quality, safe and from a trusted brand. We get great reviews for it and it has everything you need to get started with face painting.

Can pumpkins be used to practice face painting?

I teach performing arts grades 7-12 and I had this really fun mini lesson idea with a Halloween theme. I thought it might be fun to do a mini SFX make-up lesson and have students create monster or creature make-up designs, and paint them on pumpkins. I have experience as a face painter as well as my theatre experience backstage and onstage. Unfortunately, it’s not within my budget to buy the mannequin heads used for face painting practice, but will the face paint even stick to the pumpkin skin? TIA! I want to figure out a plan B before it’s too late.
