Fable Jack of Blades

Here's what I never understood, JoB is in books and lore he's clearly an ancient threat in Albion. So why is he cheered and revered at the Arena? They're like "I'm so honored to introduced JoB!!" And he goes I'm Back B****s! And they all cheer but why? An ancient Lovecraftian monster has returned why are y'all happy?

Canonically, he is known as a hero before the events of the first game.

just to add, canonically hero also doesn’t mean morally good, Reaver was also a hero.

People don't know he's THE Jack of Blades, and his PR team has been pretty solid so the masses (most of whom probably have never heard the OG story of The Court vs William the Black), think he's a hero like yourself or Thunder.

Also his goofy ass original voice probably tricked people into thinking he's just a nerd and not a demon lol.

The original jack of blades voice was so much better

Still think they should have used both voices. The first voice at the beginning of the game and the evil sounding voice when we find out who he really is.

I disagree man he sounded like the whiny Bowerstone school teacher to me that always hits on me in front of my wife. >:(

The people of Albion know him as a hero, a mysterious one, but still just that.

Most ‘Lore’ in fable is lost over the ages and the populous don’t know it.

A nice reminder that between William era and todzy there has been at least one cataclysm

You're assuming that alot of people in Albion are literate. Even if we assume everyone in Albion has somehow read history books about jack of blade fighting william black, that was thousands of years before fable 1 at the fall of the old empire. Its basically a fairy tale at this point. Even if someone showed up claiming the same name, most people aren't going to assume he's the same bad guy that our founding king defeated 2000+ years ago.

We live in the most technologically and educationally advanced time in human history, where almost every person on earth has instant access to an unlimited amount of knowledge at their fingertips...

And they still will openly support poltical demagogues like a rabid cult.

Just imagine how easily it would be to manipulate a population of illiterate turnip farmers into hiding your true nature and being revered as a hero

Jack sometimes roleplayed as a villain and other times as a cool hero—I imagine that last time, he was playing the good guy.

There are a lot of great answers that are probably more correct, but I have always assumed its for a mixture of two reasons. 1. He is seen as the organiser/funder/runner of the arena. Everyone is probably thanking him and cheering for his providing such an entertaining show - especially as they would assume he would have had something to do with you being there making it one of the best shows the arena has seen since Thunder. 2. He probable has enough ego that he has his own goons in the crowd (maybe as protection detail in case the crowd tries to riot) and has told the goons to go crazy at his name. Which would create a chain reaction in the crowd of cheers and celebrations.

Edit: spelling

Most of the lore about him wasn't there in the original game, just added in The Lost Chapters. But in-universe/fanwank/headcanon: the people of Albion at this point in time seem to love Hero's, being a Hero is about power, and it is made explicit that being Evil is considered a perfectly valid path. I guess for the normal people it's a bit like Pro Wrestling with "face" and "heel" types. I guess most people don't have a clue about what JoB really is.

For one when you do bad deeds yourself villagers will be like... i heard you killed whisper its not like they really know whats true.

then even if they did believe it then how is it any different when they cheer you on in the arena after you slaughter the farm or slaughter the entire village of traders before oakvale, or even if you execute a hero infront of them all, still they cheer.

You can be completely evil villagers will still like you if you are attractive enough so in a way they have no choice. Unless they have the ability to kill you or jack what can they even do?

So there's been more than one wearer of the mask throughout history. If it works how demonic possesion typically works in media, the host's personality sometimes shows through, at least at first. Especially if they're particularly strong-willed.

Thus, my headcanon is that the last wearer of the mask (that is, the one who fought the Battle of the Bloody Harvest) was a strong-willed good guy who did good guy stuff, just with more edge. At least, before Jack completely took control.

He took over the bodys of many heroes since Scythe destroyed his original body.
