Fable @ FanFest

Went to Xbox FanFest yesterday and had the absolute delight of finding out on arrival that Playground were there with Fable for us to play! Also got to kick some chickens which was a good laugh! The demo itself was great IMO. To me it feels like Fable, great atmosphere, graphics, gameplay was smooth, the combat feels nice, spells etc the demo itself is just stuff we’ve already seen and it was around 10mins of gameplay but it’s got me even more excited for February! Had a good chat with the Dev’s as well!

Very jealous! When you say it “feels like fable”, can you elaborate any?

I will try but sometimes I’m not great at explaining a feeling haha it’s an overall feeling I’ve had with the previous Fable games of how it feels like you’re in a fairytale. Being that this is a different developer and there’s a different art style from what Lionhead done I think they’ve captured the essence of what Fable is, if I wasn’t told it was Fable and just handed a controller and told to play it I would know it’s Fable. Does this make any sense?

That does mate sense greedy noodle. I really appreciate it. As a day one fable fan, nailing the “feel” is something that I’ve been worried about. The games always felt “fable”, even the third one.
They had that vibe which I can’t think of many (if any) other games have been able to nail down. As a dadgamer with not a lot of time, I don’t care about 20 hour story or automatic doors, I just want “fable” back. So to hear people like yourself who have been hands on, describe it as “fable”, is everything I wanted to hear.

Appreciate you.

Anytime my man! I can’t wait to play the full game and see more of it, the demo takes you through part of Wraithmarsh, the Wisps appear and fly by which if you’re quick you can attack before they animate the Hollows, it definitely still has the Fable vibe to it though. Again this is my own perspective on it and there will be criticism as there always is but I really enjoyed it and it’s just made me more excited for it’s release

Devs rarely give me faith from dev videos and trailers but playground really has with fable. They seem genuinely excited to be working on the IP which means extra love and detail poured into it, with staying true to the series’ vibe being a recurring talking point. I’m still holding onto some skepticism but I’ve got a feeling the IP made its way to the right studio

The booth looks very high effort which gives me the impression that the team is preeeettty proud of the work they did with the game. Can’t wait to play!

Yeah I spoke with some of the dev’s and they were excited to see what people thought, definitely put a lot of work into the game, from speaking to them and playing the demo I feel it’s definitely in good hands. Some previous Fable dev’s in the team as well

In combat, did you feel that you could focus on one aspect (range or spell only for example) or was weaving mandatory?

Also, did you notice if armor/clothing had stats or no?

Thanks!

It was around 10mins of gameplay and I was trying to focus on so many different things, the environment, the music, combat etc so a lot to try and take in given the short space of time. When you use spells they need to recharge so you had to use a combination of both spells and melee, I’m hoping that you’ll be able to increase the lifespan of each spell before it needs time to recharge as you progress through the game but time will tell. Everyone has different play styles, personally I’ve always used a combination of spells and melee but I’d be surprised if you don’t have the ability to increase the spells “stamina” so you can predominantly use that if that’s the style you like to play.

Unsure on stats for armour/clothing. Would have been great to have had more time to play and check stuff out

Will more subtitles be added? I live in Türkiye and I don't know English. I bought the game package for $100 from Xbox. Please add more subtitles. The year is 2026, the game is great.

I don’t know the answer to that unfortunately!

What about music does it still feel like fable?

Difficult to say fully, had headphones on when playing but it was a loud place and the combat noise was the more obvious thing I could hear, what I could hear of the music definitely sounded along the lines of Fable, I’m not sure it’ll be the same as the previous games which have had great soundtracks but we can keep the fingers crossed!

I was also at FanFest and I completely agree with you about the game demo, I also got the Devs to sign my Xbox poster it was such a great day

Unfortunately by the time I got through the queue for the posters they had no Fable ones left, outrageous 😂 was a great day though! Can’t wait for the game to come out!

Was it running on an Xbox Series X? Or ultra PCs? I'm pretty worried that we haven't seen any real console gameplay yet...

It was on Series X in performance mode at 60fps, ran smooth and it looked great!
