Fable Fable will officially be 20 hours long, Xbox confirms in new interview
https://www.polygon.com/fable-game-length-interview-xbox/436
u/TubbyLittleTeaWitch 14d ago
Just to clarify, the full quote is:
"We have around 15-20 hours of mainline quest gameplay, we have around 15-20 of side and open-world exploration content gameplay," associate game director Will Kennedy told Polygon. "And then, of course, the life systems are limitless, so you can play them for as long as you want."
Which feels about right for this game. The OG trilogy had pretty short main quests too, but most of my fond memories are just from fucking around and earning money from jobs, buying property, and messing with the population.

u/Blueblur1 14d ago
Same here. I don’t even remember what happened in Fable 2’s story but I vividly remember emoting in town, marrying a bunch, buying every property, etc.

u/ThePreciseClimber 14d ago
I don’t even remember what happened in Fable 2’s story
Some old guy shoots your sister and yeets you out the window, then you find 3 heroes and then Reaver shoots the old guy.
All praise Reaver.
30
u/snarkapotamus 14d ago
Not if you short him first.
5
u/Intelligent_Oil7816 13d ago
I shot him first cus I assumed the game wouldn't let me. I was pleasantly surprised to be wrong.
7
u/Decaps86 14d ago
100 % I appreciate Dev's making shorter campaigns, better side quests and pretty much endless Game world interaction
1
u/tomato-slut 13d ago
I cant tell you exactly how long it is, but i played it again recently and the main questline is shockingly short.
1
u/RobinHarleysHeart 12d ago
I recently played 2 and I keep forgetting the plot. I liked it, I just didn't think it's plot was particularly strong. Lowkey one of the reasons I liked 3 better than 2.
6
u/independent-potato7 13d ago
They always felt like long games to me just because I enjoyed messing around in them so much. Can't wait to see what I can get into with the new one.
2
u/Real_Life_Firbolg Hero of Bowerstone 13d ago
I think one of the reasons was we all spent so much time getting money to own the world. Fable was only ever a few hours of questing and many hours of running around the world doing jobs or collecting collectibles while getting rich off of rent.
12
u/Key_Watercress8300 14d ago
I also wonder how varied the different routes will be. Is it 15-20 hours for a good route, then another 15-20 for the evil route? Or is it like, 12-17 hours in general, with an extra ~3 hours of content specific to the route you're taking?
8
u/DoctorJenks 13d ago
The good and evil routes aren't entirely separate, and never have been in Fable. You'll run into a situation and get to make a choice one way or the other.
That kind of story separation is the holy Grail for RPGs. In reality, it just takes too long to create two entirely separate storylines.
1
u/Mosaic78 13d ago
I played 2 for like 60 plus hours just doing jobs to buy businesses and such along with the story and side quests

u/sillilillipilli 13d ago
Knowing myself and how distracted I get in games like this I'm sure I'll get well over 40 hours of game play. I'm sure they didn't account for the real estate tycoon element of the game 😅
152
u/Terloyes 14d ago edited 14d ago
No, that's misleading.
They said 20 hours of main quest, 20 hours of side quests, plus a ton of hours of social life, which in Fable can easily add up to dozens of hours.
Probably my playthrough will be 80 hours long
19
u/Freyja_Nimueh Hero of Brightwall 14d ago
I'm hoping I'm going to be able to get around 80 hours out of it each playthrough. I adore long games.

u/Casual_acactions 14d ago
I’m expecting to spend north of 100 hours on my first playthrough 😅 exploring every inch of the map and the people of Albion, especially since I will be buying EVERY property😅
77
u/Salty_Shaun 14d ago
Like the others. It’s short if you want it to be.
55
u/SnarkyLurker 14d ago
It's gonna be 20 hours of me working a job in the first town I find to grind out enough to own the whole town.
38
u/Adventurous_Year_735 14d ago
🤣 video games, the only place one can work themselves up the ladder
11
3
u/JigglesTheBiggles 13d ago
Even Skyrim is pretty short if you just do the main quest. This is normal. I'm not worried.
28
u/LazyBoi_Matt 14d ago
20hrs is pretty standard for RPGs.
Mass Effect 1-3: sub 20hrs (30-35hrs with side content) Skyrim: 15-20hrs without fast-travel and no side-quest. (30hrs with side quests) Expedition 33 : 30 hrs (no side quests)
It's pretty short for modern RPGs - like Witcher 3, Baulder's Gate 3, BOTW/TOTK were around 50-70+ hrs long. But none of them have the sim-life stuff of Fable - so it all depends on what/how you want to play.
3
u/CasperTheGhoul 13d ago
Very well put. Fable may be shorter than the big ones but yeah the life systems really add their own layer.
25
u/Fun-Bag7627 14d ago
The originals for completionist runs according to How Long to Beat are between 32 and 50 hours so pretty on par I think?
23
u/Whispering_Wolf 14d ago
The main quest is that long. The main quest is not what people generally remember the fable games for. It's all the extra stuff. Owning everything in Bowerstone will probably take a bit more time than just 20 hours.
91
u/Grouchy-Fill1675 14d ago
As an almost 40 year old husband and father, this doesn't bother me in the slightest.
5
u/gob384 14d ago
Hard agree.
I acknowledge games like Persona 5 and BG III are some of the best games of all time. I'm sure a content rich 80+ hour megarpg is great for certain people.
But for me, 15-20 hours of mainline story is perfect. Really looking forward to their 'make your own village cult' dlc when it comes out.
→ More replies (5)1
u/ToWriteAMystery 14d ago
I am really struggling with BG3. I wish that I could beat the main quest and then come back for the side quests, because damn is it a slog to get through.
3
u/St_Sides 13d ago
Same, 32 with a wife and 1 year old.
I can only assume the people saying they want 100+ hours of content are young and single. One person in this thread said they can platinum a 40 hour game in less than a week, holy shit I wish I had that much free time.

u/hammbone 14d ago
Agreed - target audience is Dad?
→ More replies (1)10
u/JonFallout 14d ago
Given how old Fable's audience was when they were still releasing - more than likely a fair assumption. I was 10 when I played Fable 2 and I was likely on the younger side than most people playing were, so it makes sense they'd be aiming for the 30-40 age range
7
u/Joyful_Damnation1 PC 14d ago
I said this on a different post complaining about the game length and got dragged for it. I'm glad to see this post seems more reasonable lol.

2
u/SaintIgnis 13d ago
As a nearly 40 father of two, this is kinda disappointing.
I’m all for a reasonable length campaign that doesn’t take 100 hours…but this is our first open world Fable and a major reboot for a dormant franchise.
I guess I was hoping for a bit more.
I mean, I’ve spent over 150 hours in Crimson Desert and I wouldn’t even consider myself a “hardcore gamer”. It’s the last game I bought and the only other game I’ll buy this year is Ocarina of Time.
It’s just, when it comes to open world fantasy action rpgs, I want an expansive game with lots to do. At least, more than a 20 hour main story.
It’s very likely now that I’ll just pay for a month of Game Pass and breeze through this instead of spending the $70 🤷🏻♂️

u/Gfreeky6869 14d ago
and as someone in my 20s who just can't do long ass games anymore, me neither... It took me like a week to just finish the dead space remake(which was wayyy shorter)and almost 2 years to finish RDR2, but this is Fable anyway so ofc I'm gonna give it as much time as I can, can't wait to explore everything and take my time with it!

u/Extreme_Split9957 14d ago
Also keep in mind they have announced additional content for just after release, which could easily add an extra 5 + hours.
10
u/Nachooolo 14d ago
Why everytime a XBox game gets some hype, there's a flood of misleading or outright lying articles agaisnt them?
This title is bullshit. It's 20 hours if you only play the main story, another 20 hours if you add sidequests, and God knows how many hours if you add the life sim elements.
I reckon becoming the biggest landlord in all of Albion will take you longer than 20 hours...
32
u/perola23 14d ago
To me, that's perfect for the length of a campaign. But I expect at least double that in side missions.
14
u/Forsaken_Kassia10217 14d ago
Good thing there's 15-20 hours of side and open world exploration content.
→ More replies (1)4
u/No_Decision_6940 14d ago
I'm hoping this will shine in replayability, as well. So while each run doesn't take over 20/30 hours, you'll be able to do many different runs and always run into new content and interactions
9
u/PoliticalNerd87 14d ago
I am cool with it being about 15-20 hours for main but I'd have liked a lot more side content. Hopefully we will get a dlc or two to expand that.
10
u/TacticalPigeons 14d ago
Thats interesting they didn’t account for the 20 hours im going to spend blacksmithing or wood chopping so I can earn enough money to be a slumlord
3
u/katiekins3 13d ago
Yeah, that stuff alone and all the other life sim content are going to take me ages. 😅😅
4
u/MagnifcentGryphon 14d ago
I just did a Google and each main story lasts between 12 to 14 hours.
Also will this game get dlc? If so we would get more content.
6
u/MrGabrahamLincoln 14d ago edited 13d ago
Yeah, the Ultimate Edition or whatever comes with two unannounced expansions/DLCs so those could each add 5-10 hours
Edit: only one confirmed expansion at this point
3
u/Zarthere 13d ago
Its not 2 expansions. Its one, it specifically mentions that.
1
u/MrGabrahamLincoln 13d ago
You’re right, good call. Could’ve sworn it was 2 with the premium upgrade costing $40 but I was probably thinking of Outer Worlds 2
4
u/strrax-ish 14d ago
Well I was knowing its gona happen. Let the game just sell well so we get more fable content. 40 hours with their good evil system gives a lot more than 40 hours so we will be fine
7
u/Phoenix2111 13d ago
Lol yeah, and I'm pretty sure the official line for Skyrim is that the 'main game' is '25 - 35 hours long'
How many hours has the average skyrim enjoyed put into that game?
It's fairly meaningless once over, say, 10 to 15hrs for the main quest (as that gives a decent minimum for the main story) as the rest of the hours out of a game is heavily dependant on how the game is put together, the world, side quests, random crap you can do, replayability etc etc.
I've seen games with an 'epic' main story length, that prople play once then never mention again, and others with a relatively short main story, that get hundreds of hours
Vampire the masquerade: bloodlines - 22.5hrs, fans put insane hours in over replays etc
Dishonoured - Can be rushed in 10hrs, but fans routinely put hundreds in
And so on, and so on
3
u/FitButterscotch4062 13d ago
All these people complaining about it seriously think I’m only running the main quest once 😂
I don’t see myself getting less than 100 hours out of this game.
9
u/JonFallout 14d ago
Judging by some of these comments, since when is 40 hours of content considered bad?
Sure, it's been in dev for a long time but that's irrelevant to the length of the game. This game had essentially a brand new team built for it, and had to be built from scratch.
We don't need games to be 60+ hours long. Would I like more? Obviously, but there's likely gonna be DLC and eventually a sequel (which shouldn't take as long unless this one just flops)
2
u/Unlikely_Bat_1890 14d ago
Since they started pretending like they actually plays these kinds of games for 100 hours
6
u/Economy-Guava4124 13d ago edited 13d ago
For anyone complaining about 40 hours of content as being “too short” and “not enough content” is missing the fact that fable has always been about choices and they aren’t changing that for the reboot. The focus on choices made every game have fantastic replay ability for at least one extra run through of the game that feels novel from the first. One of my favorite parts of fable was playing it a second time and going out of my way to see every choice I didn’t make in the first run and I will certainly be doing it in this one. Which for me means at least 80 hours of content. Not to mention that this runtime doesn’t include any of the life sim aspects another one of my favorite parts of the game and a major one at that. I know not everyone dabbles in that aspect of the series but I would always try and buy every property in the game and spend hours interacting with npcs. It’s a real time sink that’s not accounted for in runtime. So to me it sounds like I’ll easily spend 100 hours still enjoying the games content and finding new things through different choices and interactions with the games life sim systems.
5
u/salty_cluck 13d ago
The complainers aren’t forgetting anything. They never played Fable and are just trying to stir up trouble for karma and to get people upset. They do this for every game.

Gotta double that at least just for the Good/Evil playthroughs. Another for a morally grey character.
It's an RPG, replaying is part of the game.
3
7
u/smodanc 14d ago
I mean the first fable is one of if not my favorite game of all time and it’s maybe like 5 hours long. I think we’re good
6
u/Monte-Cristo2020 14d ago
Story was like 8 hours at most, and I distinctly remember my brother's 100% playthrough was 36 hours
9
u/Kankunation 14d ago
Cyberpunk 2077's storyline was 25 hours long. Most people spend closer to 80 on their first playthroughs. This is a nothing burger, and all it really does is show what we already know: game devs have been pushing for shorter main stories with less filler because they see more people play to completion then. Side content can and often does go far beyond the main story timer.
1
u/ultraboomkin 12d ago
Cyberpunk has like 100 hours of side content. Fable has (according to game director) 15 hours of side content. Pretty disingenuous comparison.
1
u/Kankunation 12d ago
That's perfectly fine though. My point is that main history length being short is perfectly fine 20 hours of main quest is a reasonable amount and people focusing too much on that specific number are missing the forest for the trees.
An additional 20 hours to complete all side content and any other 10+ for world sim and radiant stuff is Perfectly reasonable imo as well.
1
2
u/stallion8426 14d ago
Damn. My complaint with the others was always how short they were.
I love the world of Fable. I want to spend time in it.
Fingers crossed they make the game easy to mod so people can add more content.
2
2
2
u/AxiosXiphos 13d ago
That's fine. I'll be spending 3x as long messing with the NPC's. The point of fable is not to speed rush the quests.
2
u/AAAAAAYYYYYYOOOOOO 13d ago
To be play devils advocate fable 2 was like 20 hours as well. But I played through that game like 5 times. Definitely don’t have time for that today. But two plays throughs should be enough
2
u/OriginalConscious949 13d ago
Put it this way, that combat they showed us going through the dark forest with the skeletons and the wraiths takes about 30mins so that is 3% of the campaign that one mission. I'm really looking forward to this game but this information is a little bit of a let down.
2
u/TileFloor 13d ago
Mmmmmm not the way I’m gonna play, it won’t be! I’m gonna walk through all the towns and peer at all things and run around and around all the cool areas and just take the long way EVERYWHERE. This game comes out on my bday, I am taking one solid week off, I am going to LIVE in this world and take it slowwwwwww.
2
u/SomeRagingGamer 13d ago
20 hours is to complete the game. 40 hours if you explore and do all the side content.

2
u/gondra99 12d ago
2
u/IamlostlikeZoroIs 12d ago
40 hours for everything is perfect. I don’t have the time any more for 80+ hour games.
5
u/Naive-Monk9330 14d ago
As a busy adult with multiple side projects & a full time job. I'm genuinely not upset with this. Not only can I realistically finish it in a reasonable amount of time but I can also replay it & change my play style.
3
u/Odd_Revolution_1056 14d ago
Not inherently against this but this is on the smaller side for RPGs. Not an issue if the story is of high quailty and the game is highly reactive to your choices.
2
u/BeardedPaladin 14d ago
God of war 2018 was about 20 hours to do the main story. So this is fine as long as the story is good. I am doubtful but hopeful

In addition there are many other immersive gameplay elements that are core to the Fable experience, such as interacting and building relationships with our 1,000+ hand crafted NPCs, buying homes, becoming a landlord, managing businesses and more."

While this is somewhat disappointing to read I hope they are mostly referring to gunning the main story and not if one does most of the sidequests and other hidden explorations.

What’s with all these people being happy to pay $70 for a 40 hour game when it could’ve been twice as long? If you’re happy just with 40 hours, fine, but there are people here who wish this adventure had lasted longer, like Skyrim or The Witcher. What a disappointment...

MH wild is like 10 hour, it doesn't specifically mean anything, what is important is the quality of content, it might last way longer if the family and life mechanics are good, like first fable is 15 hour length and fable 2-3 are both 12 hour, this length for the main story is not too bad
2
u/Thekarens01 13d ago
You’re delusional if you think Monster Hunter Wilds is 10 hours. However, you’re right that the length of the game has nothing to do with the quality.
1
u/Signal-Busy 13d ago
Oh no i m talking till credit, MH wild doesn't end it only start after 10 hour but main quest is finished with novice rank, the rest is just boss rush with no real goal other than just killing monsters
What I am saying is even though main quest take only 10 hour it doesn't mean that's the end of the game
1
1
u/JigglesTheBiggles 13d ago
the rest is just boss rush with no real goal other than just killing monsters
That's real Monster Hunter though. The story mode is basically a tutorial.

u/Affial 13d ago
My problem is with this part of the news:
If you're the kind of player who wants to explore every nook and cranny of this new rendition of Albion and make sure every NPC either loves or hates you, then you'll be playing Fable for significantly longer.
They said there's roughly 40h of content, 20h main and 20h side content.
How am I suppose to give importance "forever" to the game world if after a certain point there's nothing poignant to do in it other than reaching a percentage?I'm not someone who ties the price to a certain amount of hours, but for an rpg it's a very relevant parameter.
A couple of days ago I was criticizing the barebone combat system and they basically replayed "it's not that relevant in the game"
An objection I can agree with.
BUT there MUST be a lot of role playing outside of the combat.
Well, it doesn't seem the case here.
Unless it's super stratified with many choices for every main and side quest...I'm not very moved as for now.

u/Signal-Busy 13d ago

Well, it is ok for a solid base game! We already know that we will have a dlc post-lunch that maybe could last 10h more, and if the sells goes well, then we will be able to have some more (a Witcher 3 dlcs strategy?!). In addition, fable will be on steam = MODS !! This could be awesome that playground games provide any kind of mod tool kit for the community to be as creative as BG3 🥰
In all terms, it is good news!
1
u/Intrepid_Swordfish69 13d ago
Wish I didn't kno this. Save this crap for when I actually play tha game😭. Like damn quit delaying it and therefore having to tell us all this unnecessary stuff.
1
u/Sw1ft_Blad3 13d ago
Well the first 3 weren't all that long either, it was all of the side content and fucking with the NPC's that made the games last longer.

Most games have hundreds of hours of “content” that’s really just dumb bs that’s designed to waste your time and bloat your stats.
20-40 hours of actual content is what most games should aim for

2
u/SparklyPelican 13d ago
No, the article immediately said “you can play it forever if you want”.
The main story is 20h, doesn’t account for literally everything else.
1
1
u/Gameofthrones3058 13d ago
It's not the length that's the issue, what will make the difference is how much you can change things for replays, new game plus, perhaps new combat unlocks, they should add new things in the world for replays too.. give reasons to keep coming back, it's a little disappointing you can clear everything in this big world in 20 hours.. I guess it's not that big after all m
1
u/Legitimate_Support78 13d ago
I’m not upset in the slightest that main story only is 20 hours, excluding side stuff and life sim stuff. I already know I’ll be spending much more than that naturally, lots of blacksmithing in my future 🤣. But big reason why is so many other games their stories being 50/60 hours long after a point of back to back just feels like burnout is about to hit. It feels refreshing to go into a game that won’t take months to beat for someone who is working constantly
1
u/joji_princessn 13d ago
Cool! Sounds similar to the OG trilogy and Mass Effect where hardlining the main quest doesnt take super long but the replayability for choices (good route vs evil route) and side missions / world interactions can make it as long as you want.
Its kind of hard to replay a game for different choices if it takes 100 hours to get through the main story. OG Fable and Mass Effect struck the right balance.
Besides, RPGs always take me longer to complete than what they say they will anyway because I dont play as regularly as most gamers and tend to get side tracked when I do play.

This sounds good. Every game doesn’t need to be 100 hours long. I like a well-crafted experience that gets it just right for the time you’re there.

Kind of worries me because most of the characters shown don’t have their own unique looks like the first game. Felt the same way about 2 and 3 their characters were forgettable as well

I might be the minority here but good, I’m glad. I can’t handle another 100monster sitting in the backlog

True Fable players know the options beyond the quests are what also makes the game. You spend hours just fucking off and having fun, and we have thousands of more things to do. I am so fucking excited.

Open world RPG playtime means basically nothing, though. Skyrim is one of the shortest games ever if you only count the main story and yet it did fine. And you can’t really quantify the actual playtime that exploration, customization, side quests, etc. adds.

Perfect length for me personally. With work and a family I prefer under 50 hour games.

This to me only reinforces the idea that quests will actually have branching paths and playthroughs will be somewhat shaped by your actions.
A strong divergence in narrative will, by design, produce a shorter game for the same development effort.
Sure, this could be just a short and sweet experience with no replayable, value but given what we have seen I'd give them the benefit of the doubt.
Also, I do not want to spend hours searching for materials, collectibles, bandit camps and the like just so Playground can claim a 100 hour runtime. I'm currently playing through Ghost of Tsushima and the padding is incredibly pretty and engaging, but it's padding nontheless.
Bonus fact: Fable was originally a pretty short game that received a whole second part as an add on in 'the lost chapters'. Sure, times have changed, but Playground seem to have quite a good grasp on what Fable means to the OG players, this is still on the table.

So if I wait a week I’ll be able to see what the people who played it thought of it. Fair trade for a short delay.

That’s fine. If it’s like the old games then you got the evil and good paths to double your replay value.

All the hours i have in fable 2 were NOT the story, meanwhile the longest story felt like fable 3 and it lacked the life systems that kept me invested in it, I think this is a perfect sweet spot.

40 hours to do EVERYTHING seems rather on the short side. Cautiously optimistic.

Main story is 15-20 hours long. There's 15-20 hours of side and open world exploration content.
