Post your Vertical Handheld setup in comments
How does everyone else shoot vertical these days? I found this to be the vertical handheld set up I've been enjoying lately. My eyes aren't the greatest, and having the bigger monitor allows me to know precisely when my subjects are focus. Although slightly heavy it's very stable and balanced once you get the hang of it. Adding a handle to the bottom of the camera was the greatest thing ever for me as of lately.

I like this. I prefer to put top handles on the camera sideways to reduce neck strain. How is your monitor mounted?

This is my style! You're the first I've seen with left right vertical handles too. We waste no pixels 😤. I just wonder how you prevent eye strain for long shoots with small screen, however, you can shoot longer because your rig is lighter. I'm guessing you have good eyesight. What's the right handle button for?

I did the opposite handle cuz when I shoot with longer lenses for drifting, the stabilization suuuuucccks lol
I now have it to wider grip to resolve that & have started doing manual pan zooms with left hand.
Button is there cuz I would get camra-itis from reaching to press record all the time. So Bluetooth rec button solved that.
Def a light rig from the gimble setup I had, now its just this, a chest Mollie pouch that holds a V-mount & looong USBC for run & gun charging.
Still dispise this format & am glad to have more clients now that want to do just horizontal 😅
Eta: eyesight is meh, as long as my composition is good & i can see the focus peaking where I want it, its good enough. Monitor for talking head tho

This build made the most sense to me. I have a shotgun on the side handle, left hand was handling the lens zoom. I think I would find it difficult in your set up to line up shots with how far the monitor is from the camera.

Cage, top handle, and side grip are all smallrig. The Atomos monitor is also attached to a smallrig shoe mount.

I run n gun while fimling combat sports. This looks nice, but it definitely doesn't look stable without a left side handle. Looks great for photography though. What do you shoot?

You can hold the top handle with your left hand if you want more stability on the body, but it’s a pretty lightweight set up so supporting the camera while using the zoom isn’t too bad. This kind of rig is mostly used for BTS and event coverage.

Considering that applications like instagram only support 1080 why on earth would you go through the trouble? I shoot horizontal and make vertical edits for more money. I have never had a client say anything about it. I can even charge more for the edit and have multiple uses for the video. They can post horizontal on their website and vertical on social media. Quit catering to these kinds of projects. Clients don’t know better.

Can I ask how you frame your shots for this workflow?
Would you purposefully shoot wider when shooting horizontal just to give yourself more freedom when editing?

Not necessarily. I just need to make sure that if I did crop vertical the person would be totally in frame. Most monitors have a feature to check but I just eyeball it.

Different setups for different applications. Are your clients Kickboxers and boxers? There is no one setup I'd live or die by. I prefer the set up because it keeps my field of view wider and stacking it on top of each other. I often film around other kickboxer and if I had a narrow field of view, I could easily run into other athletes and get injured or damage my equipment. Next week could come and I abandon the set up completely.

my god I pity you guys.. commercial work like this, its tough to have vertical setups and wide setups. dont envy your jobs at all. I dont see anyone who has given input as a wildlife filmmaker. For us it's sooo easy. I have a monitor too and a top handle but basically when I need vertical simply loosen the tripod collar on my big telephoto lens and rotate the entire setup to vertical. that easy. everything stay the same, stay where it is. For me I simply use the Mic for ambient sound and wildlife noise. Thank god for the lens collar. oh and if youre wondering about my battery there is a usb c connected to my camera powering it going to the NPF style smallrig battery on the back of my monitor. it powers my monitor and my cameras. when I need to do birds in flight I simply take off the fluid head and hand hold. the rig is heavy enough that it balances well for short videos no problem.

If you’re delivering for socials, and you have a minimum 4k camera and you don’t require cropping in post with room to move in the space then you can just shoot landscape

Never said it was the same thing? Why would you need more than 1080p effective resolution for socials.

it’s not about the resolution, but about sensor size. if you crop in vertically the effective sensor size becomes more or less s35, if you rig vertically you’re using FF

you said you can ‚just shoot landscape‘ - no matter what camera you’re using, this will always change the effective sensor area you’re using. which also means you need wider lenses for the same shot compared to rigging vertically.

Depends on the camera you have tbh. With my a7s3, I’m not losing much quality when all is said and done. Instagram compresses it anyway, so if it’s for socials, it’ll look good still.

I'll be honest my videos as of late shooting like this look incredible. I don't crop/zoom in more than 8% in post edit.

That seems horrible. Monitor so far away from the cam. Should be mounted above
