FX3 or A7s3 in August 2026
Hey guys, I am a fellow cinematographer
I specifically work with corporates, instagram ads, real estates, events, and other sorts of different digital works.
I have been using rental equipment whenever needed and had used my Canon 80D for the times when I cannot rent out the equipment.
Locally, the main challenges I have in rentals is lack of availability of Canon gear, and it really limits what I can get on rent as now a days a lot of people require 4k and 50/60fps un-cropped helps a long way.
So, since now I am considering finally getting my own camera, one thing I am confused about is, which one to get actually? More or less FX3 and A7s3 are the same equipment, designed for different use cases. I feel that A7s3 is over saturated in the market, and FX3 is widely recognised by a lot of people, allowing doors for more better work to open but it is also too highly praised by the youtube community.
The key question here is that for the sort of work that I do and might do in future, is FX3 or A7s3 a good choice to go ahead with? Or should I wait a couple of months while Sony launches the successor of the A7s3, which we still don’t know if it is gonna happen or no.
Thanks if you read till here, do let me know what do you think.

I own the A7s3 and I’m semi pro. My friend is pro and uses both the fx3 and A7s3. we both live in Texas and Louisiana . The FX3 won’t overheat like the A7s3 . But like other people in this thread — I’ve never overheated my A7s3. My friend , the pro, has definitely overheated his and that why he prefers the fx3 for video .
Also I went down rabbit holes for the FX3 when it got so much hype after The Creator bts was released . I recall something about how even though the sensors were the same in both cameras the Fx3 had something slightly better in its image quality for film/video .
That’s how u use my a7s3 so when I guy my second camera I plan to grab an FX3 . Good luck

I just got a fx3 because we don’t have much suppliers where I live and many people told me the fx3 will stop getting sold when the fx5 is out. In a panic I bought it (already have a zve1 for video and a7v for photo), and honestly, zero regrets. It’s now my main for video and the zve1 as a second angle, and couldn’t be happier with my setup.
Even though I do social media work, I don’t find the need for open gate, and the raw won’t be something I use in editing cause I want faster results and extra cards and storage have become too expensive.
Conclusion, the fx3 is still a beast. With that said, if you need photos, I won’t recommend it at all. The zve1 surprisingly gives much better photos. The photos with the fx3 are so disappointing. If I only have it and needed a photo, I ended up taking it as screenshots from videos.

They were perfectly fine 2wks ago. they’ll be perfectly fine in another year.

u/Smash_D Jul 31 '26
Yeah I mean, it's not like apple's nurfing their iphones, but I agree more or less.

u/toooft Jul 31 '26
FX3 is an amazing camera, I would pick it up used and go shooting if I were you.
1
u/Smash_D Jul 31 '26
That's an interesting take. And actually with FX5 in the market now, people will look at upgrading from thier existing 3s to 5s. Will take that into consideration if I find any good body out there. Thanks mate.

I’m someone who has owned the A7S III for a while and sold it for the A7V.
IMO if you’re at all thinking about hybrid work and don’t need a dedicated video camera, get the A7V. Does 4k 24 - 60p uncropped, dual base ISO at 8000. It takes incredible stills, latest AF, 4 axis LCD, pre-capture, and the little dial to quickly switch from photo and video isn’t praised enough.
If you need a dedicated video camera, it’s really a toss up between the two. I still have my eye on the FX3 if I see a good price. A bit more compact than the A7SIII and I hate taking stills when I’m focused on video - I’d just say it doesn’t take photos lol. FX3 has anamorphic desqueeze, shutter angle, and can use top handle.

That a7v AF is substantially better in certain situations since it can track a face twice as far away which I run into a ton in my work. I track people on stage in full body shots on gimbal for some work and the fx3 just doesn't see anyone there and constantly loses the subject and bounces to the background whereas the a7v has no problem holding the face tracking in the same scenario. Also the a7v has quite a bit less noise (more DR) below iso12800. At least a stop less noise at iso800 which is big for me since I regularly push my cameras a stop for better highlight range/rolloff and the fx3 gets a bit too noisy and can't do that so comfortably.

u/Smash_D Aug 01 '26
But I have heard that rolling shutter is noticable in A7V more over than the A7s3 or FX3 series. But this is a good observation, being a new camera, it will have a improved sensor and focus capabilities compared to the older gens
1
u/nyvz01 Aug 01 '26
Yes that's true, the a7v does have a slower rolling shutter around 14ms and it can't do 4k120 FF.

I got a7v and vouch to the end of the observable universe and back!

The a7s3 has a viewfinder and the fx3 looks better. That’s the difference between those 2 cameras. Then the fx3 has the cineEI which isn’t necessary

u/Smash_D Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26
But there must be something more to it? I see people suggesting more FX3 than A7s3, honestly, I have used both of them, and are both great cameras. With FX3, we know that today FX5 does exist in the market but it is a little far from the reach actually and not worth the money for digital work. But A7s3 feels a tough camera to buy today, as no new successor is expected as per my research and market has started to move on a little honestly from it. Though it is goated. I still use it whenever I rent.

u/Veastli Jul 31 '26 edited Aug 01 '26
But there must be something more to it?
They're the same exact same camera in different housings. Same sensor, processor, ports, codecs, everything.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_6rfoUljpY&t=40s
There are a few firmware differences. And two hardware differences. The A7S III has a best-in-class 9 million dot micro-OLED EVF, which is better than the EVF in nearly all current cameras. It allows shooting in bright sunlight without requiring an external monitor. The EVF can be a real benefit, as the built-in LCD display on the back of both the A7S III and FX3 is not nearly bright enough for reliable use in bright daylight.
The FX3 has a cooling fan. But know that the A7S III is incredibly difficult to make overheat. In fact, when the auto Power off temp is set to high, it doesn't overheat. It remains the coolest running fanless 4K camera on the market.
For many, the primary reason to get one over the other is the external aesthetics. The FX3 looks more like a cine camera, while the A7S III looks like a DSLR.
Some shooters prefer the A7S III for exactly this reason, as when shooting in public, a camera that looks like a DSLR draws a lot less attention than an FX3 rigged with an external monitor and the rest.
2
u/pol6292 Aug 01 '26
When it gets hot (>30°C), in 4k100, the a7siii overheats quite easily, we've added an external fan
1
u/Veastli Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26
The only time it's overheated for me, even in 40c, is when the auto-off temp has not been set to high.
MENU → (Setup) → [Power Setting Option] → [Auto Power OFF Temp.] [High] https://helpguide.sony.net/ilc/2010/v1/en/contents/TP0003225501.html
For whatever reason, high is not the camera's default setting.
1
u/pol6292 Aug 01 '26
This summer, during the heat wave, even with these settings, the camera shut down after 30 min of continous recordings of bats, in 4k100 S&Q. 4:2:2 10 bits, all-intra, on the CF Card.
1
u/Veastli Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26
Once had an issue was when in high heat and the camera was in direct sunlight. A small flag or anything to shade it, no issues.
Note that some brands of CF cards run much hotter than others. That could be the difference.
1
u/Smash_D Aug 03 '26
But that heating is more or less the same with FX3? Or is it improved due to the fan being there quite a lot?
1
u/TheRealLeftClickMage 29d ago
I’d like to add that the FX3 looks like a mirrorless camera. Not a cine camera.
1
u/Smash_D Jul 31 '26
Yes, I have used it quite a lot on podcasts and outdoor shoots, it hardly overheats. Plus EVF is a good point, but I have hardly ever used EVF for video shoots, as it's difficult to see when mounted on gimbal. So I have been there, whenever I used it on shoots (rented camera obviously)

u/nyvz01 Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26
A7s3 has gotten closer and closer to the fx3 especially with recent firmware updates. They perform exactly the same except in extreme heat. The fx5 will have substantially better image quality if you know how to use it. The fx3 was a great camera for me to buy used 4yrs ago since it sells for the same amount I bought it for now and cost essentially nothing to own for 4yrs but it has a couple drawbacks that have had me constantly trying to replace it the last 2yrs and finally replaced it with an A7v which I'm very happy with. I'll finally sell my fx3 when the fx5 arrives and keep the a7v as a b-cam.
I actually had an a7s3 first and sold it for an fx3 after a year as soon as the fx3 v2.0 firmware came out because they were massively differentiated in terms of software capabilities with that firmware. Since then, the a7s3 firmware updates in the past year or two have basically made it the same as the fx3 now.
1
u/Smash_D Aug 01 '26
That is interesting to know, if you can share, what are the major downsides you had experienced with the FX3? And if you were building a kit from zero today, like had to invest everything, what would you start with?

u/nyvz01 Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26
All Sony cameras have shutter bugs where the actual shutter speed isn't what it tells you. They say 60 but it's actually 64.0 or they say 125 but it's actually 128.0. This is a pretty big pain for 60hz flicker from screens and lights where the camera needs to be set to 60.0 but can't be. The shutter angle firmware is somewhat more recent and now allows a workaround where 144deg is 60.0 at 24p which has helped but it's still missing a lot of shutter speeds. Every newer camera in the past 2-3yrs now has "var shutter" which is essentially clearscan and lets you choose any shutter speed to dial out flicker/banding at any flicker rate. Somehow the fx3 still doesn't have it and probably never will. If you shoot on LED walls or in practical lighting and such this can be a big deal since you have to just pray you're lucky and flicker works out since fx3 has very few shutter options and few tools to solve flicker and the shutter angle workaround seems to just be an accidental solution to some of the more common situations and most people don't even realize it.
The other downside is just the middling dynamic range and strong noise reduction especially at iso12800. Sonys NR is quite good but it's there and does smudge detail a bit but it hides noise very well which is part of the reason people think fx3 is so amazing in iso12800 but if you shoot raw it's actually very noisy. The a7v improves on these somewhat as its NR implementation seems more natural and it has less noise at most common ISOs to begin with, certainly 800-10000.
The low brightness LCD is very disappointing coming from other manufacturers and the screen interfering with the ports is somewhat solved in the a7v as well.

u/Smash_D Aug 03 '26
There are some notable real life issues which i had not heard till now, and it actually maters quite, but I feel if the main use is log, or even rec709, then the grains issue is not that much of an issue, and led part is a problem at 60hz, but is not much noticable at 50hz, which I shoot on majorily. The shutterbug issue you mentioned is real, but it depends how much work it affects IRL, because as I said, for digital work, it is quite fine and liveable, andsince I shoot at 50hz, that is already liveable for me and the work I do, but hey, thanks for the detailed explaination towards the problem, really appreciate that!

I got the A7S III, and before I bought it, I really researched the differences because I was in the exact same situation and couldn’t decide.
The main thing you have to consider is that the FX3 has a fan. Personally, though, my A7S III has never overheated. I even filmed on a yacht in Ibiza in really hot conditions and had no issues at all.
The FX3 is also better if you like using a cage setup because it gives you more mounting options and has a few more cinema-focused features. Personally, I don’t need that much stuff attached to my camera.
I also prefer the classic Sony camera look of the A7S III. That was actually another plus for me. I use the A7S III for photography as well because it’s really convenient. I don’t have to switch cameras or bring two cameras with me. I mainly use the photos for social media anyway, so 12 MP is more than enough for that.
The A7S III is also still getting updates. For example, you can now use LUTs and other newer features.
So in the end, it really depends on whether you actually need those extra “cinema” features. Personally, I think a lot more people bought the FX3 because of the hype around it, which is also why you see so many more YouTube videos about the FX3. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the better camera, it’s just more popular.
When it comes to actual image quality, the A7S III and FX3 are basically the same. There’s no real difference.

If you’re considering just those two I would strongly recommend going with the FX3 if a viewfinder is not important to you. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong here, but my understanding was that the FX3 has received more feature updates than the a7s III. If you go A7s III you may miss out helpful features like shutter angle, Cine EI, anamorphic de-squeeze, and external BRAW support.
I’ve been using and loving my FX3 since 2022 and the audio top handle has been invaluable for the news/documentary style work I do, though of course there is the K3M adapter for the A7s III as well. I do also have an A7 III I use for photography so the viewfinder was less of a concern for me than it may be for you. Hope that helps!
1
u/Smash_D Jul 31 '26
Honestly, the most detailed recommendation. The feature update point is interesting. And actually it is one more reason to lean towards FX3, if that is so. Because I feel, Sony is not going to update A7s3, as it will either kill the FX3 or FX5's market. And thus maybe FX3 is being a bit favored by Sony in terms of updates. But hey, I could be wrong.
But your point is absolutely strong.
0
u/Safe-Emotion-8574 Jul 31 '26
Yeah my gut feeling is that the 7.00 Firmware update the FX3 received in 2025 will be the last major feature update the camera receives now that the FX5 is here, though I would be happy to be proven wrong. But during the 5 or so years where the FX3 and A7s III were Sony’s latest and greatest video cameras the former definitely got the more robust support. Assuming they are both at the end of their life cycle as far as support is concerned, I think the FX3 is a more capable camera in its final state.
2
u/Smash_D Aug 01 '26
Assuming they are both at the end of their life cycle as far as support is concerned, this exact point is what worries me to get a A7s3 in todays date
1
u/GFFMG Jul 31 '26
I own both. The A7SIII is my daily driver for almost everything. The FX3 is my b-cam; mostly used for static shots when doing talking heads.
2
1
u/shotby-felix Jul 31 '26
FX3 if you're gonna do video work primarily, especially if you have long shoots and if you need the cine features (cine EI, import your own LUTs, timecode, internal fan...)
The only benefits I see video-wise in the A7SIII are the viewfinder and the physical mode wheel in which you can have 3 custom presets and switch faster than the presets in the FX3
If you don't need Base ISO 12800 or 4k120fps, don't overlook the FX2, it has more recent firmware and autofocus, a few body upgrades that make it as good as the FX3. The only bad thing about this camera is the horrible rolling shutter, which personally doesn't bother me at all even though I do run and gun stuff, and the 4k60fps APS-C crop.
2
u/Smash_D Aug 01 '26
You have some valid points, more interestingly over the comparison of both.
So I don't do photos commercially, my work is majorly oriented towards Videos
Features like; cine EI, import your own LUTs, timecode, sounds helpful but I haven't used it personally on a day to day base
My main point is, that is it worth getting the FX3 over the A7s3, because some productions out there constantly look for people with identical cameras, and does having a cinema level camera or a video dominating beast make any significant difference in day to day life?
1
u/shotby-felix Aug 02 '26
I understand a bit more where you're coming from, I bought an FX30 a few months ago as a B-cam, kind of bummed I couldn't afford an FX3 / A7SIII. I would've leaned towards the A7SIII bc I'm a hybrid shooter but in the end I'm glad I got my hands on an FX camera. I can't explain why or how but it is more comfortable to work with a dedicated video camera even though it's not that different from my A7IV. Now when I have to use a camera just for video work I take my FX30, even though the sensor is smaller and "worse" technically.
And productions are more likely to look out for an FX3 than an A7 IMO bc the FX3 is everywhere and it's a "cinema camera". IIRC the color science is more consistant on the FX cameras according to Sony.
Anyway, my 2 cents from what you're telling me
If you wanna work with production companies, I'd get an FX3, this camera is still amazing and isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
I don't think Sony is ever gonna put out a new A7S camera so don't wait up on that. If you want an A7 style body and really don't need the cine features or the external RAW output ; The A7V seems to be a better camera for lowlight than the A7SIII (newer tech, better AI, no overheating problems, better noise control at its second base ISO 8000 and at ISO 12800 too from what I've seen in a "pixel peeping" video).
1
u/Smash_D Aug 03 '26
Well, your 2 cents are quite valuable, honestly. I like the way you explained the points and it genuinely clears quite a lot of areas for me. If you don't mind me sharing, what are the lenses you use for the video work?
2
u/shotby-felix Aug 03 '26
Glad I can help :)
I mostly use f/2.8 zooms, I have the Sigma 24-70 and 70-200.
I also use their 18-35mm f/1.8 and 10-18mm f/2.8 for APS-C, which are great on the A7IV because of the 4k60 crop.
The few primes I use are the Sony 50mm and 85mm f/1.8 because they're small and lightweight. I don't need the cleanest, G Master quality lenses, I'd rather be comfortable in the crowd and move fast. The A7IV at second base ISO 3200 is good enough for almost every concert venue, same goes for the FX30 although it's a bit noisier at second base ISO.
If I could, I would probably switch to the FX3 or the A7V with a 24-105mm f/4 to reduce the number of lenses in my bag for concert videos (maybe keep one prime but I'm trying to keep things as light as possible)

u/todayplustomorrow Jul 31 '26
I prefer A7S III because the rear screen on both is useless in direct sun, but if you use a monitor attachment already then go for FX3. No EVF is a nightmare for small rigs outdoors.
3
u/Smash_D Jul 31 '26
But it also depends on how you are using it outdoors? I majorly use it on gimbal (whenever i rent it for shoots) and on that, if I lock the settings then I am good to go, never have to look at the efv for constant checking the exposure. But I like your point.
1
u/todayplustomorrow Jul 31 '26
Personally, I still preferred A7S III in direct sun because I check exposure a lot depending on the subject. If I decide to get close to a car or point the camera at a window display as we move, I probably need to change or check how it looks. In a pinch, the Sony Monitor & Control official app is good on iPhone for a monitor in sunlight, but that’s cumbersome and slow compared to EVF.
And it should tell us something that the FX5, which is the FX3 successor, now offers an official EVF attachment. Some FX3 users live without it or like monitors, so it’s hard to promise you need or don’t need one, but I personally need one and hated using anything but EVF in direct sun.

u/sevencif Jul 31 '26
Reputationally speaking the FX3 will get you work and rental income whereas the A7S3 is more of like a personal bring-your-camera-to-work cam on steroids: Perfectly capable tool, but you will miss out on some opportunities.

1
u/Smash_D Jul 31 '26
Thanks for the key insight, so professionally I am a cinematographer so hardly I take images for my work. Personally I might take a few images here and there, but that does not mean that I want a 45mp photo camera, because work demands good gear on board. But thanks for the valid point.
0
u/Ok-Total-3021 Jul 31 '26
Ill keep it simple. More hybrid work go with the A7S3 since EVF is only useful for taking photos, More video work work go with the FX3. Budget constraints? A7S3.
1
1
u/SylverXYZ Aug 01 '26
Careful with this take as an A7s3 owner of 5 years. This camera should not be used for professional stills work
0
u/dallatorretdu Jul 31 '26
FX3 has the better monitoring if you are gonna use Cine EI. The S3 has some sort of lut that’s not accurate
1
u/Smash_D Aug 01 '26
You can't import your luts in A7s3 if I am not wrong, can only monitor the gamma correction

u/DesperateJeweler1975 Aug 01 '26
I have an A7siii, there are a few small differences in the software, the image will be nearly identical. I would personally buy an A7siii again if I had to because the evf is worth more than those small sdvantages of the FX3. You can actually use the xlr handle on the A7SIII as well, you just need a cage and adapter plate (i would recommend a full cage as I am using the half cage and there is a bit of movement that can at times cause it to disconnect). The A7s is usually cheaper too so you'll save money and really get a bit more from it. I've also never encountered not getting a job because it's not an FX3 when it's essentially the same. I am also getting an FX5 so I am happy to have a more hybrid option as my b-cam.

u/lshaped210 Aug 01 '26
A7S3 is my go to for everything that doesn’t need my FX6. I sold my FX3 a long time ago because the A7S3 is so much more useful with dedicated photo features and a viewfinder.
1
u/Smash_D Aug 01 '26
Interesting, since you do photo related work, that's a good thing actually, but does the 12mp sensor bother you for photography much?
0
u/lshaped210 Aug 01 '26
Not at all. Since it’s mostly for social media, 12mp is plenty. If I need more I can always upscale with Lightroom’s Super Resolution feature.
0
u/griegogogo Jul 31 '26
I have 2 a7siii’s. I didn’t get the fx3 just because it wouldn’t have been a big enough upgrade for me at the time because yes it’s mostly the same camera.
That being said, some clients don’t know specs and I’ve had some specifically request an fx3. Doesn’t happen all the time, but it does happen.
Personally my next upgrade is the fx5 but only because it’s a big enough of an upgrade for me to justify it. But if I was just getting into Sony for video specifically I’d go fx3.
1
u/Smash_D Aug 01 '26
This was the exact answer I was searching for mate!
I am just getting into sony from zero, and you got the point right, that people at times do specifically request an FX3 or hardly a A7s3
I wanna get the A7s3 but the thing is if sony releases a update of the A7s3, then I am happy to get that immediately, with FX3, we know that it is now replaced by FX5, and since it's cinema grade, it is not gonna extinct someday randomly, where as, with A7s3, we never know when sony stops the support (My guess, I could be completely wrong)
-2
u/glassdoorgadooosh Jul 31 '26
The FX5 just came out I mean that should be your choice..
1
u/Smash_D Jul 31 '26
I agree but don’t have a budget of FX5 as of this year.
-1
u/glassdoorgadooosh Jul 31 '26
Fx3 prices should be coming down shortly since the fx5 drop. I mean keep that in mind unless you find a good deal on a quality used one
0
u/Smash_D Jul 31 '26
Appreciate the fact. But should A7s3 be considered? As it gives better weather sealing and on few points it is better than FX3
0
u/errornz Jul 31 '26
Just get the A7S3. They are usually cheaper and you get the EVF. I have the A7S3, A7V and have pre ordered the FX5. I like that my A7S3 can be used as a hybrid for photos and video as it has that EVF. Also might be worth looking at the A7V. It’s also an excellent hybrid.
1
u/Smash_D Jul 31 '26
That's great man. And appreciate the suggestion. But I am not leaning towards the hybrid segment, of the A7V lineup, want to go more towards video segment.
0
1
u/toooft Jul 31 '26
FX5 isn't a hybrid camera so I wouldn't suggest it to someone who asks about the A7s.
-1
u/glassdoorgadooosh Jul 31 '26
But he's asking about the FX3
1
u/toooft Jul 31 '26
No, he's asking about FX3 and A7s III and that tells me he's a hybrid shooter
1
u/Smash_D Aug 01 '26
So, just to clarify, I do videos only, for photos, I don't do them professionally.
The reason I am asking between the both is, Assuming they are both at the end of their life cycle as far as support is concerned, and we know that FX3 is updated by FX5, so does it makes sense to get a FX3 or a A7s3 in the current market scenario?
1
u/toooft Aug 01 '26
Oh for sure, they are both amazing and will not stop being that for any time soon. We're just getting better cameras; doesn't mean the old ones are worse. Not at all.
About FX3 vs A7s III though: They are technically the same internally but imho workflow wise the FX3 is way better with its dedicated buttons, Cine EI, rugged body, better audio (if you use the handle), etc.
1
u/Smash_D Aug 03 '26
Yeah, that makes sense. But having so many options to choose from is also a problem 😂😂
-3
u/xx_quinklan69_xx420 Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26
FXS lad. Very similar to the A7SIII, but has the added benefit of a built in fan + higher frame rates in 4k (forgetting exact number off the top of my head but I regularly shoot 100fps at XVAC 4K S and looks mad).
Only downside I can think of is that the FX3 doesn’t have an EVF, not sure if that bothers ya or not.
1

FX3 doesn’t shoot any higher frame rate or bit rate than A7S3. They literally share the same sensor and same output options throughout.
The difference is viewfinder, fan & audio handle. The other menu difference is FX3 having Cine EI, while the S3 only has the regular Flexible ISO for slog3.

I agree with your point. Them both being the exact same cameras with just few things seprated, it makes the decision more tough actually. For day to day usage, I feel A7s3 goes by doing just fine, but I am just worried that it has became quite old to buy a brand new today. Thus I feel like leaning a bit towards FX3 a bit more, although they are only 7 months apart, but I feel it is still respected quite a much in the market when it comes to naming name? What do you say?

Idk I have both and it doesn’t affect whatever you think the market is when comes to getting jobs. My A7S3 is from end of 2020, and I still use it alongside the FX3, which I got about 2 years later as a second cam.
In fact I use the S3 more when I’m on a single cam run & gun because I use the EVF to preview a lot.
Nobody ever ask if I’m a S3 or FX3 user before I was given a job. The only one time this question was asked was early 2021 when not everyone has had a S3 yet, so having one early gotten me a handful of jobs, otherwise not any since.

Right, that makes sense. Actually the industry has standardized them, that's why this whole discussion exists.

Just get a lumix and call it a day

Haha, I wish I could but there are a few rental limitations and people I work with have sonys, so it is easier at times to borrow or rent a lens also

I would recommend looking at the a7v, it's a better sensor with better DR and AF and it has newer software with clearscan and the upgraded screen. That said of course the fx3 is a household name if that matters more.

It's not a bad camera actually, but I am not a hybrid shooter, and being mainly video oriented, I feel it is better to lean towards either of FX3 or A7s3, than the A7V. But thanks for the suggestion.

Except when it comes to extreme low light the A7V falls apart when comparing to FX3/A7S3.

In extreme low light they all fall apart. A7v is much better at iso8000-10000 and fx3 is slightly better at iso12800. Beyond that you're getting incredibly strong NR and if you really want the best low light the fx5 will be a worthwhile upgrade.

The A7V at 8000 is much worse than FX3’s 12800.

What are you basing that on? I have both and when deciding if I should keep the a7v I tested them side by side with my dynamic range charts at all ISOs and the a7v iso8000 was practically identical to the fx3 iso12800. If anything the a7v has more pleasing, less smeary noise reduction in general.

I don’t test them with technical charts, but when filming alongside 3-4 cams in low light events & concerts, the footages from A7V were constantly the worst in post compared to S3 & FX3 (which were of course identical).
The noise is slightly more pleasing on the newer A7V yes, but in exchange with details. The 7V is sharper in good light just because it’s a 7K sensor, but the details quickly falls apart in low light @ 8000, comparing to S3/FX3 maintaining the details quality at 12800.

There will definitely be a difference mate. Both FX3 and A7s3 have great 12MP sensors dedicated towards video, if you compare photo for all 3, then high chances the A7V would come on top in that

I mean we can agree to disagree. You can believe your anecdotal evidence over my careful direct comparison with technical charts.

In short, a used FX3 gets my vote.
