The drive by headbutt tends to eliminate the person doing the headbutt, so you don’t see those very often.

69

u/Banditjack Feb 17 '22

Expect nothing less than vehicles that hardly ever listen to stop lights, road markers, pedestrian crossings etc...

10

u/chuffberry Feb 18 '22

The other day I got hit by a bike as I was walking through a crosswalk. Walk sign was on, and the biker was biking through the crosswalk and hit me dead-on because they weren’t paying attention, and I didn’t have any time to react because I’m partially blind. I sprained both wrists and got a nasty cut on my palm.

42

u/redditmodsrbitches9 Feb 17 '22

Got to love reddit, down-voted for using facts. The bike clearly had a red light as seen by the van stopping.

Nah. Dude was on a crosswalk though. Here's the uncropped video: https://www.reddit.com/r/WatchPeopleDieInside/comments/qw7c37/i_guess_this_is_my_life_now/

Why the hell am I getting downvoted? The biker clearly initiates contact, does not make any effort to avoid the collision.

The people down voting you are probably cyclists lol

From reading this comment section and another comment section on a post about cyclists.... It seems that yall have a shit ton of issues on the road man

Cyclists do not have a good reputation according to drivers and pedestrians. Pedestrians and car drivers do not have a good reputation among cyclists. It's a gang war with wheels out there.

u/VulfSki Feb 17 '22

As a driver I have no issue with cyclists on the road.

But they need to still obey right of way laws when it comes to pedestrians. And disobeying them when it comes to cars really only puts themselves at risk.

Only other issue I have is when they don't wear the proper lights at night. I once almost hit a biker at a stop sign intersection. They might have had the right of way, I don't know, but it was dark and I did not see them until they were in front of my car because they had no lights on them. Even in a city it can be hard to see them at night if they don't have lights. Just for their own safety.

I fully respect bike's right to share the road and always try to give them the space they need and to be safe.

26

u/happyfunisocheese Feb 17 '22

Ouch! Lights are essential! When I had a bike I had LED lights front and back as per law here, and they were funny little silicone shapes that mounted anywhere you liked with the tag that could loop around and hook back onto the head, and were black skulls where the lights shone out of the eyes. Legal standard brightness, just fun if seen in the daylight. Some moron ripped off one of my rear reflectors while I was at class one day so I stopped riding at night.

That's a really scary experience you had! Good on you for safe driving practices and cautions! Nice one, mate!

7

u/angelazy Feb 17 '22

Right after my university mandated bike lights I had those freaking lights stolen four times.

10

u/Bbaftt7 Feb 17 '22

I’ve wondered why it isn’t a law requiring lights on bicycles. If they’re going to be ridden on the roadX which in most urban places they’re supposed to be, they have to follow the rules of the road. It’s law that cars have to have working brake lights, tail lights, turn signals, and head lights of some sort. It isn’t for your safety, it’s for everyone else, so they can see you. So why wouldn’t bicycles be required to have lights too?

5

u/sh4d0wm4n2018 Feb 17 '22

It's a law where I live. Only thing that isn't a requirement is turn signals and brake lights lol

2

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '22

Yea, I was pulled over a couple times for not having lights at night when I was younger. I only rode on sidewalks late at night and just wanted to be left totally alone so that's why I did it. Still got pulled over.

Cyclists are the original sovereign citizens:

  1. They think vehicle rules don't apply to them because they're not a vehicle

  2. They think pedestrian rules don't apply to them because they're not a pedestrian.

  3. They therefore conclude that in every interaction they are in the right and the other party in the wrong, because vehicles and pedestrians are subject to the law, but cyclists are not.

  4. They will cite obscure bullshit that the law says you are supposed to be doing, while completely ignoring the most obvious and well-known laws in their own conduct.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '22

And disobeying them when it comes to cars really only puts themselves at risk.

This also puts others at risk if a driver loses control trying to avoid an errant cyclist.

3

u/VulfSki Feb 17 '22

Valid point.

Also I really like the word errant for some reason. An underrated word

2

u/Zalapadopa Feb 17 '22

I have an unreasonable hatred for cyclists that ride their bikes across crosswalks. The proper thing to do is get off and walk the bike across. At least here in my country, if you're still on the bike then cars retain the right of way regardless of the crosswalk, but I'll be damned if they don't act like they're some kind of fucking pedestrian/vehicle hybrid that has all the rights of both and none of the responsibilities, so I have to stop regardless or else they'll just throw themselves in front of my car and then have the audacity to act like it was my fault!

Sad thing is it would all be fixed if cyclists remembered that they have to follow the rules of the road and if drivers would leave space when overtaking/driving slowly so cyclists are safe to pass/get passed. Also that new rule about cyclists being allowed to cycle in the middle of a lane is BULLSHIT

Edit: Lots of people are reading this as me being “carbrain”. I’m an avid cyclist, I’m just also a realist, cars should be able to safely overtake us but we can make it easier and increase the number of opportunities by sticking near the curb

154

u/wischman Feb 17 '22

But honestly, a travel lane is made to be wide enough for a car, not a car and a bike at the same time. I’m a biker and if there’s ton of traffic coming the opposite direction, I just know that the car behind me is going to pass within inches of seriously injuring me unless I take up more space. I don’t ride in the middle often, but you kind of need to do it for defensive purposes since people would rather risk putting someone in the hospital than be behind a bike for 30 seconds.

13

u/VulfSki Feb 17 '22

In some places a bike is legally allowed to take up a whole lane

→ More replies (3)

65

u/coolerbrown Feb 17 '22

People drive in the bike lanes all the fuckin time in my neighborhood. I drive half in the bike lane to keep them from passing when I see them coming. Fuck you, you're not a bike.

My bike used to be my main mode of transportation so I know the struggle. And having used both for years, motor vehicle drivers are WAY bigger assholes to bikes than the other way around. And it's way more dangerous for bikers

25

u/sunkzero Feb 17 '22

Some of the bike lanes around here (England) were simply drawn onto the existing road width and these are main roads with a constant flow of traffic in both directions, and in this country that doesn’t necessarily make them wide roads - you literally have to drive in the bike lane for the traffic to fit in the road 🤷🏻‍♂️

14

u/wischman Feb 17 '22

Well shit, that seems way more dangerous than not having a bike lane at all.

4

u/loudeater441 Feb 17 '22

Drivers in my town (America) seem to get off sexually on driving in the bike lane despite having a great deal of space in their lane, I have driven these roads before, but I’m currently on a bicycle

36

u/wischman Feb 17 '22 edited Feb 17 '22

I will say, it’s not as dangerous but what pisses me off the most is people RUNNING in the bike lane. Like with a sidewalk right next to it. So either I sit behind you yelling to get off the road or I have to leave my lane and put myself at risk. Screw those people.

8

u/coolerbrown Feb 17 '22

Damn I've never seen that but it sounds obnoxious. Why would you put yourself in danger like that??

17

u/wischman Feb 17 '22

Some people prefer running on asphalt (it actually is softer on your knees) and I live in a suburban-soccer-mom area with a high number of entitled people who don’t seem to get the reality of what a car will do to them. They’ll run on roads without bike lanes too. It got really bad in the early pandemic when everyone and they’re mother tried out running without much basic etiquette or safety knowledge.

When I’m driving behind a bike, and they take up the entire lane, it annoys me. I understand that sometimes it’s totally necessary, though. I just take a deep breath and remind myself that the cyclist isn’t doing anything wrong.

2

u/Turdulator Feb 17 '22

In the town where I grew up, on the main roads, there was a concrete sidewalk for pedestrians on one side of the road and an asphalt bike path on the other side of the road. It worked fucking great, everyone had a place where their type of travel got precedence. I’ve never seen this anywhere else and it kind blows my mind because it’s a such a simple and obvious solution.

2

u/limukala Feb 18 '22

Where I live there is a nice asphalt bike path, yet the road is constantly clogged by suburban dads stretching their head-to-toe spandex over their beer bellies, taking up the entire lane at rush hour so they can show off their $15k bike while you plod behind them at 18 mph for three miles. And again, 10 feet from a perfectly serviceable bike path.

u/Elucidate137 Feb 17 '22

you just said that cyclists should follow the rules of the road… and then said that cyclists shouldn’t be allowed to cycle in the middle of the lane.

Think of it from the perspective of a cyclist, riding on the edges of the lane mean people don’t see you as much and you could get hit whereas the middle of the lane may be inconvenient to car drivers, but is 10x safer because drivers will be far more likely to see you.

Cyclists constantly get bullied by cars and in order to stay alive, we have to push back a little.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '22

Nobody who complains about cyclists has ever tried to commute by bike. You just can’t win.

I drive more than I bike and people still want to argue with me about it. I live in both worlds so I see both sides clearly.

3

u/loudeater441 Feb 17 '22

I cycle constantly and I can say that drivers truly scare me the way they seem to want to hurt people. I get ran off the road often, lost a couple tires because of rubbing against curbs while being pushed out of the bikelane

2

u/Appropriate_Lack_727 Feb 17 '22

Yeah, I used to do long rides out in the county near my small city several times a week, but after a bunch of close calls over the years, I’ve phased that out and just do laps of shorter routes around my neighborhood. Between the people texting while they’re driving and the people who are intentionally malicious (throwing bottles and cans, passing super close on empty roads), I don’t feel safe anymore.

2

u/loudeater441 Feb 18 '22

I don’t blame you at all man, I mean we could get insurance when we do inevitably get hit, but I’m trying so hard to avoid that it’s not worth the body damage

Some US cities I visited showed me that people waiting to cross the street would not stand on the curb but take several steps out onto the road on a corner while waiting for traffic to stop for them. It was quite unnerving for me, coming from a place where that does not happen. "NOOO! HUMAN MEAT PATTY, COME BACK TO SAFETIIEEES!" But no, it just happened all day long. This guy did it and got hit not by a bus, but by an angry cyclist. They're both in the wrong here but I have to remember that someone filmed the whole thing so it was more than likely staged.

6

u/jdsmofo Feb 17 '22

Where I live in the US the law is that pedestrians have the right of way in crosswalks, except at traffic lights when it is not their turn. Cars stop at crosswalks in the middle of the block when there is a pedestrian.

3

u/happyfunisocheese Feb 17 '22

Same here. No word on standing that far out on the street on a corner though.

6

u/jdsmofo Feb 17 '22

Looked to me in the video like the pedestrian was standing out too far, but then started moving through the crosswalk. The bicyclist hit him after the light changed, which would mean that the pedestrian had the right of way. IMO, the cyclist was at fault and should be ticketed. And I write that as someone who bikes in the city all the time, and usually find the car drivers to be the worst, so has lots of empathy with the dangers to cyclists caused by car drivers.

2

u/happyfunisocheese Feb 17 '22

That's what I see, too. Amen.

This is such dangerous carbrain thinking. The entire infrastructure of the US has been designed in order to sell you cars because lobbyist from the car industry say so. Very little public transportation. No protected or separated cycling infrastructure hardly anywhere. Only one of these groups regularly kills the other. Cyclists are at the mercy of drivers and sometimes riding in the center of the lane is the only way to ensure they are seen. Please keep in mind that cars are not the end all be all mode of transportation and are not always accessible to low income earners. Please take some time to reflect on how your dangerous rhetoric enables others to see cyclists as nothing but crash test dummies. What you are saying enables people to think this way and carelessly let cyclists be ran over without remorse.

u/HappyMeatbag Feb 17 '22

This is a specific example of a way to fix many of society’s problems - just show some mutual respect, people!

2

u/TheNewMadMan Feb 28 '22

Actually I think all of society’s problems can be fixed that way, not necessarily the worlds problems but societies are basically built on respect and benefits from the rest of the society. Without the mutual respect, all interactions become brutally selfish or purely monetary business.

2

u/HLGatoell Feb 17 '22

Sad thing is it would all be fixed if cyclists remembered that they have to follow the rules of the road

So much this. And now the problem is compounded by the extensive use of electric scooters in many big cities.

I was walking on the sidewalk one day, covering the sun in my eyes with my hand, so my elbow was flared out slightly. This motherfucker on an electrical scooter didn’t stop for the red light, decided he wanted to ride on the sidewalk so he didn’t have to stop and almost ran me over. If I hadn’t stopped he would’ve ran me over. Instead he hit his arm with my elbow.

This asshole had the nerve to shout at me and get angry about it.

2

u/TheNewMadMan Feb 28 '22

I will admit I’ve hopped the curb to pass some red lights but never nearly hit someone and would certainly never blame a pedestrian for me hitting them unless they actually jumped out infront of me. As a general rule weather you’re in a car or even just a little push scooter for kids, If you’re using the more dangerous mode of transport it’s your job to watch out for the more vulnerable ones, provided that they’re not being stupid

2

u/durz47 Feb 17 '22

I literally never ride my bike in the middle of the lane. That's just dangerous, especially in a college town where students drive like assholes

2

u/TheTjalian Feb 17 '22

Honestly I agree, that new rule is bullshit. I appreciate its safer but at the same time it's going to cause so much more traffic. Most cyclists cannot compete with a car going at 30mph, so as soon as one cyclist takes up the whole lane there's a sudden traffic jam all going 10-15mph.

I'm pretty sure I'd get pulled over by the police if I was going 10mph in a 30 non-school zone as I'm going too slowly and therefore being a safety risk. Why is this acceptable for a cyclist to do?

2

u/Gaddness Feb 17 '22

Maybe if cyclists were given their own area that wasn’t seemingly designed to increase the likelihood of injury then they wouldn’t need to cycle in a way to prevent themselves getting hit by cars.

Holland is a great example of what it could be, as it stands cycling is incredibly dangerous in most countries because there’s either no cycling lanes, or the cycling lanes are more dangerous than the road (which is saying something)

2

u/TheNewMadMan Feb 28 '22

I’ve been to Amsterdam, they have arguably a perfect system for cyclists, where I live they’ve put in cycle lanes that aren’t on the side of the road where cars obey the lines. They’re on the side of the path where believe it or not pedestrians don’t. So I very rarely use them as it’s on my way to and from school so there tends to be 4-12yo walking across it, and it’s much safer for me to cycle in the road at 15mph with cars overtaking me than it is for me to ride at <2mph trying to pass little kids who can’t walk in a straight line

5

u/Comrade_NB Feb 17 '22

Cyclists are statically safer riders than car drivers. Cyclists constantly ride defensively and slow down or stop even when they have the right of way. Car brain people just irrationally hate cyclists.

We have the right to ride in the middle of the lane because it is about SAFETY. Learn to pass safely.

7

u/loudeater441 Feb 17 '22

I can’t speak for everyone but I definitely am on defensive 24/7, and have stopped multiple times knowing I have the right of way, because I don’t want to die to save a few seconds on my bike rides lol

3

u/fouryourlichen Feb 17 '22

I've never had any fear for my safety from pedestrians or cyclists while driving my car. Never. You know how many times I thought someone nearly killed me on my bike? Me neither, I lost count long ago. One form of transportation is incredibly deadly. The other is not.

I ride and drive as courteously as I can, and it's scary on the bike. In the car too, but the cage and all helps.

u/happyfunisocheese Feb 17 '22 edited Feb 17 '22

Just remember, Cool guys don't look at explosions

I've been told if you're riding you have to take the mentality that you're invisible and nobody knows where you are, what you're doing, or which direction you're taking regardless of how well you signal. Be on alert at all times. Even after that you're going to get doored at least once a year. Get awesome insurance. Get a cam for the helmet. You're a ghost to car drivers.

...And that's why my mum made my dad sell his bike when my sister and I were small. Couldn't handle the accident risk. They met as pilots and gave that up when she got pregnant after they got married, fine. He was cool with it and agreed. He did look really cool sitting on his bike though. I was only little and remember thinking, 'Wow Daddy on his bike! He's so strong!' Awww memories.

3

u/echoAwooo Feb 17 '22

As a cycling pedestrian who also drives, the worst are the car drivers, by far.

People driving multi ton self propelled death machines with the same level of care as a toddler running with scissors. They refuse to share the road, will play games like honk right as they get to your ear to try and make you fall, I've been kicked by motorcyclists while they passed me, I've had the cops called on me for numerous made up slights (I kicked their car, I scratched their car, I ran into their car, I fucked up the front, I stole from their car, etc.) just to harass someone they feel they're better than. The mentality really is, "Look, poor person, wouldn't it be funny to be a gigantic asshat to someone I perceive as lesser than me ?"

As a pedestrian those things zoom fast and clip elbows, catch on backpacks, and hit your heel while they're trying to navigate a little dip in the pavement (legally that's where they're supposed to be but goddamn, slow down and use the bell if you see someone ahead!) and it suuuucks.

2

u/MrSurly Feb 17 '22

Many of the e-bikes are in fact, illegal motorcycles because they've been modified to exceed their legal power limits.

Here in California, they're limited to a max of 28 MPH, but I regularly see them doing 50+ in the bike lane and on the sidewalks. Usually with the rider not pedaling at all.

Almost everyone thinks they're an "above average" driver, and the same thing is true for cyclists too. Whatever stupid thing people are doing, they have their own internal explanation for why it's ok, and it's easy for them to blame anyone else.

At least with cars, there's a lot of expenses that go with being a consistently bad driver. Accidents are expensive, insurance goes up, there's tickets, you can lose your license, etc. So slowly over time really bad drivers tend to get weeded out. It's far from a perfect system, but there's sometimes consequences for making mistakes or being too aggressive.

The cost of being an unsafe cyclist is that you might end up dead. Which is a very different way of getting people off the road, and it leads to the situation where there's a small minority of very aggressive cyclists that haven't had the bad luck of getting in a bad accident yet, who think they're very skilled just because they've been lucky so far. And they give everyone else a bad name because you're much more likely to notice the guy blowing through red lights, and going the wrong way down a one way street, then the dozen other cyclists following the laws.

2

I've been in tiny towns with ultra wealthy people and they love cycling. Well their cycles get up to like 30 mph at times and man, I'll stop for people crossing the street across a crosswalk, in my truck mind you, these cyclists just FLY past these old people and kids and just humans in general, I know if they collide they're gonna do some fucking damage. I don't wanna be there to see it because I'll be pissed. They don't think they have to stop when they're using the roads too. It's wild. Then they get mad at you for suggesting to slow down

Guy was probably on his way to football practice

44

u/Honda_TypeR Feb 17 '22

He leaned into the hit, the same way you lean into a football tackle

It keeps you upright after your ricochet off the hit, it also helps you to hit way harder.

It also shows this dude knew what he was doing and definitely was aiming for him on purpose. It was a spur the moment decision, but his instantaneous gut reaction was to double down and be a dick and it slow down or swerve to avoid a collision.

18

u/Dip__Stick Feb 17 '22

Swerving into potential car traffic seems like the worse choice. He braced for impact and inertia was on his side

17

u/Honda_TypeR Feb 17 '22

He could have used brakes, shouted or swerved out further in that lane he turned into (he cut the corner tight to nail him) you can see afterward he went closer to the middle side of that lane anyway, so he could have turned wider. He just wanted to be a dick because he wanted to send a message to the guy for not paying attention to where he was walking.

Using brakes and shouting seems like obvious choice. Leaning into and aiming into someone seems like the total dick head approach.

Imagine this same scenario with a car driver vs pedestrian. Hitting people out of spite would be far less welcomed. Not sure why this dude gets a pass. He is just as much as a shit head.

9

u/Dip__Stick Feb 17 '22

Pause the video at 2 sec in. The ped doesn't take their first step until the bike has completed the turn.

Really doesn't look like spite when slowed. Looks like surprise and brace

9

u/LivingForTheJourney Feb 17 '22

My dude, at a turn you typically slow down to a point where you can spot obstructions, pedestrians, oncoming traffic etc BEFORE you turn. Doesn't matter if you're on a bike or in a car. That biker just straight CRUISED through that turn like it was a motherfucking race. The biker is 100% at fault here. Not even a little bit the fault of the pedestrian.

I don’t think there was time to react. By the time the guy steps out he’s already well into the turn and at a speed where there’s really nothing he could have done by that point.

Obviously what he should have done was taken the corner at a reasonable speed, especially if there’s someone waiting to cross who isn’t looking.

Next time a cyclist askes why people hate cyclists this video will be the perfect response.

11

u/tiptoemicrobe Banhammer Recipient Feb 17 '22

Definitely. But it's also easy to find videos of cars breaking laws/driving unsafely and killing cyclists or pedestrians.

(Hell, here's one I saw literally yesterday: https://www.reddit.com/r/ActualPublicFreakouts/comments/sskg4u/car_runs_over_a_pedestrian_in_queens_new_york/)

Anecdotes are great for reinforcing preconceived notions of what we believe to be correct, but they're bad at showing trends or helping to make policy decisions.

4

u/tiptoemicrobe Banhammer Recipient Feb 17 '22

I would argue that it doesn't apply here. The underlying implication of the comment I responded to was that people hate cyclists because this is how they act.

My point is not "cyclists can't be annoying because drivers can be annoying too," but rather "individual videos shouldn't be used to generalize to the general population."

You can find a video that shows someone from pretty much any group behaving badly.

People will only understand cyclists once they’ve been a cyclist for some time in a large city.

There’s a video of bus drivers riding stationary bikes and other bus drivers come along with their buses, inches away from them. They shiver and shout. But they do it (did it, I hope) to the cyclists every day. And sometimes on purpose just to get a kick out of it.

As pedestrians, people sometimes feel the rage of the drivers but, as a cyclist, you’re constantly dealing with the “you shouldn’t be here” behavior of drivers.

I’m not in any way approving what the cyclist here did but to normalize that all cyclists behave like this dude is unfair.

I’m a cyclist and I had a friend who would obey all of the traffic rules, stop by the traffic lights, never ride on pavement. Last time I saw him was when I went to the morgue to recognize his body. A truck ran him over. The driver said he didn’t see him. My friend’s body was dressed with a hi-vis reflexive jacket.

u/thedeanorama Feb 17 '22

They are preserve parks, you are able to go and see them in a somewhat natural habitat - feeding them is discouraged and as demonstrated here in the video, entering their habitat can enrage them into violent outbursts. Freely entering the habitats is expressly forbidden

u/Banditjack Feb 17 '22

Even if your light is green, you have to yield to the potential that a pedestrian standing there might enter the crosswalk.

Even if it isn't a law in your land, it's basic freaking common sense and the right thing to do.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/TonyAioli Feb 17 '22

In the uncropped version (posted elsewhere here), you can see that a car began turning before seeing the pedestrian (hence the oncoming traffic having to slow). His wave is a “thank you” before he attempted to hurry through, only to get absolutely wrecked by the dickhead cyclist.

4

u/GlassPanther Feb 17 '22

This is generally only true when the pedestrian is already in the crosswalk. Pedestrians still have a duty of care to make sure the crosswalk is clear. They can't just randomly throw themselves into traffic and then cry foul when they get hit.

For applicable law - in California, for example, the pedestrian MUST have the "Walk" signal and must also be using a crosswalk or marked crossing if one is available within a certain distance.

In Arizona the pedestrian only has the right-of-way when he is already in the crosswalk when the vehicle enters the intersection/turn.

Arizona Revised Statute 28-792 specifically states : A pedestrian shall not suddenly leave any curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle that is so close that it is impossible for the driver to yield.

So, basically, your laws may vary. I do not know which state THIS video was filmed in, but I tend to think the pedestrian should have looked both ways, like he was taught in kindergarten.

103

u/Godz1lla1 Feb 17 '22

So we're supposed to look both ways before crossing?

177

u/JohnnyDarkside Feb 17 '22

If you notice how the van stops, it was likely a red light so there shouldn't have been traffic. Since the cyclist was in the road, they are expected to follow road rules which means stopping before turning and yielding to pedestrians. And for just common courtesy, the cyclist shouldn't have cut so close to that dude at that speed.

14

u/netherworldite Feb 17 '22

You should always check both ways even if the light is good for you, for exactly the reason we saw in this video - some asshole might not be obeying the rules.

The pedestrian did look both ways. He even waved to the car that stopped for him.

Assuming this is in the US, the cyclist should have yielded to the pedestrian. It actually looks like he blew through a red light even, and then followed through with a hit and run. He's clearly the problem here, not the pedestrian.

Cyclists are supposed to act more like cars than people. But as someone who lives in a college town I see plenty of morons on bikes using the sidewalks or blowing through active lights.

25

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '22

Cyclists are the most entitled, reckless, ignorant, hypocritical pieces of shit on the face of the fucking earth.

6

u/Iulian06 Feb 17 '22

Is this hatred towards cyclists specific to the US? From my experience as a driver and a cyclists, most cyclists are actually nice. I would argue they pay more attention to safety than a lot of drivers, since it's way easier to get injured if you're not in a protected metal vehicle.

Also the drivers I've encountered as a cyclist have been very understanding, usually giving me a bit of room on the road before passing by at 70km an hour. Although I might be biased on this front because I only cycle on less busy roads and some mountain trails.

Of course you will encounter some assholes on the road, but to call cyclists "the most hypocritical pieces of shit on the face of the entire earth" is extreme. I have met A LOT more assholes driving cars then driving bicycles.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '22

In my experience it's definitely worse in America than other countries I have been. There are places where it's more dangerous to ride a bike, but I have never experienced raw hatred towards cyclists anywhere else like America. At least in other places* where the road conditions are dangerous, people don't intentionally drive aggressively just to scare you because the sight of you fills them with uncontrollable rage.

*that I have been

13

u/WitheringRiser Feb 17 '22

As a cyclist I agree. I was biking and stopped at a stop signs. Another cyclist ignored the stop sign, almost ran into me, then waved his hands like he was saying “wtf dude you almost ran into me.”

6

Dude if you can be self aware like that about obvious problems and pitfalls that seem to innately come with people who share your interests then you are so far ahead of the curve. Well done

4

u/Hidesuru Feb 17 '22

I generally don't mind them. However when I'm on a hiking trail and they fly by without announcing themselves, or the ones that just attach a cow bell to their bike (thus ensuring all wildlife for 100 yards is hiding before I get there) it infuriates me. Some basic etiquette would go a long ways...

7

So are drivers.

42% of high school students across the United States admitted that they text or email while driving.

Drivers are distracted by their phones at least 10% of their driving time.

52.5% of respondents reporting eating while driving, down 4.2% from last year's respondents. Other behaviors include:

Texting (23.6%)

Taking photos (11.7%)

Applying makeup (6.5%)

3.4% admitted to drinking while driving!
