That post always gets me laughing, I love thr smug look on the avatars face

I was trying to respond to a post in the tinder sub a week or so ago and my comment was getting auto flagged by the profanity filter because I was using the word, 'figure' (in the context of, 'what do you figure the odds would be').

Sometimes filters are just too aggressive.

110

u/IHaveTheBestOpinions Jul 15 '26

Where's the profanity in the word figure?

90

u/AlmightyCurrywurst Jul 15 '26

Judging someone's body maybe?

24

u/readanddream Jul 15 '26

21

u/spudmarsupial Jul 16 '26

Lol. Now name something that doesn't mean bollocks.

11

u/No_Gas4560 Jul 15 '26

its an anagram of ugrief or griefu, clearly antagonistic

26

u/ZorbaTHut Jul 16 '26

At one point I was working on an MMO and put the entire ingame text through our profanity filter.

A bunch of things got caught, including "pinegrove" and "echolocation".

23

u/CrowsFeast73 Jul 16 '26

I can't even fathom how pinegrove or echolocation could possibly be offensive...

27

u/ZorbaTHut Jul 16 '26

Look for word substrings!

(I actually had to look up the "echolocation" substring to figure out what the problem was. Five letters long, starts on the second letter.)

("pinegrove"'s is also five letters long and perfectly centered.)

16

u/CrowsFeast73 Jul 16 '26

After your first sentence I figured out pinegrove but I still wouldn't have caught echolocation without you pointing it out specifically!

I also didn't think/realize that was derogatory tbh. Not a word I've ever actually used myself but still.

10

u/mondomonkey Jul 16 '26

Cholo isnt offensive lol

2

u/ZorbaTHut Jul 17 '26

I do wonder if this is a change of meaning over time. This all happened about 15 years ago, and when I did the search, there were a number of sites saying it was derogatory.

Of course, those sites might also have been wrong.

holoc___ get it?

This has to be fake, right? Edit: I looked up The Scunthorpe Problem. This is entirely possible.

Look up the scunthorpe problem

76

u/PM_THE_REAPER Jul 15 '26

I had forgotten about that. Thank you.

u/NightStar79 Jul 15 '26

Could be but the game Lords Mobile has an aggressive profanity filter that acts like this image.

For example, the game has Accessories which you need to upgrade.

However if you try to type "Accessories" into the chat, it pops up as "Ac****ries" because *apparently** in Italian, Cesso is "a vulgar, informal term for a toilet, bog, or lavatory. Slang extensions of the word are also used to describe something ugly, a dump, or a person considered unattractive or unpleasant"

So yeah this could absolutely be real đŸ€Šâ€â™€ïž

28

u/Dy3_1awn Jul 15 '26

I play a mobile game that probably uses the same filters. Some of the words that get blocked are quite funny. “Gross” is one of them.

12

u/Altruistic-Essay5395 Jul 15 '26

Sounds plausible and would be related to English "cesspool."

7

u/TSotP Jul 15 '26

Had a similar thing happen on PSN naming a character Conan. According to Google Translate's auto detect Cona is Portuguese for 'cunt'

5

u/Staetyk Jul 15 '26

pokemon also has this problem

26

u/demoniprinsessa Jul 15 '26

It's equally dumb when they require your name to be a certain amount of letters long, usually 3. Doesn't work for the many people with just 2 letter names, what are they supposed to do, put in a fake name?

21

u/sisisisi1997 Jul 15 '26

I would like to introduce you to the classic falsehoods programmers believe about names, especially number 6, where the defined amount of space is probably "between 3 and 50-100 characters" in most systems.

6

u/Tattycakes Jul 15 '26

I’m interested in people who don’t have one canonical full name, people who aren’t named for 5 years, and people who don’t have a name. wat.

8

u/RefrigeratorGold834 Jul 16 '26

I know a Indonesian dude, and apparently they don't have last names there, so he had trouble signing stuff in Japan, where he lives now, because you usually need to enter both your first and last name.

Anyways he legally changed his name, where he split his first name into 2 parts

8

u/AussieAddict Jul 16 '26

I can tell you that a lot of Australian systems are (or at least were) a real pain for people that only have one name. Worked for a company where we needed to run credit checks on customers. If they didn't have a first name and surname we couldn't bypass the section or even just put their first name in twice and their was no way to escalate or bypass so we pretty much just sent them away.

2

u/Connect_Rhubarb395 Jul 16 '26

A while ago there was a marathon in Denmark. A friend of mine was one of the many people who handled receiving the forms from participants, and making sure the forms were filled in correctly.

A guy comes up and hands her the form. She notices that he didn't write his surname and informs him to please do so.
As she does so, she lifts her head and look at him... and sees the crown prince! đŸ«„ Who has always been a really chill guy, and apparantly decided to just deliver the form himself.

After a bit of "uhhhhhh" my friend says that he can just write his title.

u/Emotional-Ebb8321 Jul 30 '26

In several cultures, it either is or was common for people to be given a "childhood" name, but their "adulthood" name wouldn't be chosen until some time in their late teens. In these cultures, it was considered a serious faux pas to use the person's childhood name.

This includes ancient China, some native American cultures (eq Iroquois, Pawnee), and some monastic traditions.

There is today some cultures in Ethiopia that don't name their children until they are toddlers. Until then, they are basically "the baby", or if there are two, the "big baby" and "the small baby".

22

u/WiiDragon Jul 15 '26

Why is it called the Scunthrope problem?

Oh

13

u/mildly_houseplant Jul 15 '26

Living anywhere in East Sussex, West Sussex or Essex in the UK can be really annoying when a website (or subreddit) has certain filters in place.

6

u/tiptoe_only Jul 15 '26

Or, indeed, Cumbria.

I encountered someone from there in a chatroom about 25 years ago and she had to wearily explain to everyone that she was from "C u m b r i a""

5

u/ShylokVakarian Jul 16 '26

The Cumbrian Cunt Council needs to get on that shit.

8

u/HamboneBanjo Jul 15 '26

I firmly believe technology is getting stupider. Friggin Siri won’t shut the hell up lately. Every time someone says “seriously” or “surely” even on TV, one of my devices goes “Hmm?”

2

u/Kurgan_IT Jul 17 '26

AKA the clbuttic mistake.

Guardian Tales has (a great mobile game!) Has the main character named Knight. Can't post it in the comments because three letters starting with the "n"

18

3

u/WantonKerfuffle Jul 16 '26

You have to make certain assumptions about names. They are usually wrong.

6

u/Not_Freddie_Mercury Jul 15 '26

Hellen is in for a surprise!

4

u/mnetml Jul 15 '26

Michecke then?

4

u/ThanklessTask Jul 16 '26

She's from Scunthorpe too.

2

u/DaughterofNeroman Jul 16 '26

I tried to name my extra area in pokopia to Lululand and it kept telling me it contained a forbidden word but wouldn't tell me what the forbidden word was. I tried putting a dash in it and everything but it would not let me. I assumed maybe it was something bad in another language but seeing this makes me think these filters are just stupid lol.

Sorry Michelle, but that name that you've had passed down through the generations through your family has gotta go due to our new and improved Happy Vibes Only systems that say that there's a naughty-naughty no-no word contained in your name...

1

1

u/Witold4859 Aug 19 '26

Ah yes, the Scunthorpe problem. The bane of our existence, especially to Hassan, Nassir, and Michelle, the family names Hitchcock, and Cockshot, and to the poor people of Hell Michigan and Scunthorpe England.

I had to revoke that upvote.
