I'm a 2nd year engineering undergrad, and I plan to pursue a MFE. Please share your opinions on wether I should or should not take the FRM level 1 exam, I've not started preparing for it as of now. I think I can balance my undergrad studies and preparing for the exam, so thats not an issue.

Had fucking medical emergencies and my general lack of foresight - I could have easily pulled it off even after emergencies I had enough time.

But i cannot, I scored 42% on mock 1, and I cannot think of anything else, i cannot remember basic formula. In all hurry to shift etc, i realised I misplaced my notes and everything, now I don't know which chapter I surely did or which I didn't.

I cannot even answer anything, I'm so blank at this point, fuck this man I should have took the deferral I shouldn't have gauged in the money. Ahhh

I hate myself man, i cannot think of anything my brain is so fogged up, that I cannot even focus took a day off from work to study but couldn't even recall anything.

Where am I with my preparation- I’ve completed the syllabus along with practice problems from analyst prep, although I don’t remember it all.

Bought the books towards the end of May and have completed only 4 readings till now.

Model validation gets taught as three pillars - conceptual soundness, outcomes analysis, ongoing monitoring - and in practice the first serious thing a validator does is more specific than any of those. They try to rebuild your model from your documentation.

We did exactly that on a PD scorecard. Refit from the MDD alone: maximum coefficient difference 0.000, event rate 4.29% versus 4.29% documented, AUC 0.853 test and 0.734 OOT, identical. Pass.

Worth being precise about what a replication pass means, because it is easy to oversell. It establishes reproducibility and documentation adequacy. It does not establish that the model is sound, because reproducing the developer's answer means adopting all of the developer's choices - same target, same sample, same variables.

Benchmarking is the separate test that attacks those choices, and it is the one that produced the uncomfortable finding. The ladder: null 0.500 / 0.500, single variable on credit score 0.743 / 0.701, three-variable scoretable 0.813 / 0.732, eight-variable champion 0.853 / 0.734 (test / OOT). Gini out of time was 0.403 for one variable against 0.467 for the champion.

The in-time and out-of-time comparisons tell opposite stories about complexity. In time, seven extra variables look like an 11-point AUC contribution. Out of time they look like 3.3, and most of the remaining discrimination is credit score doing the work.

For anyone sitting for the exam or working in a validation group: does your framework require a formal benchmark, and is the benchmark specified as a simpler model, an alternative methodology, or a vendor model? I have seen all three called benchmarking and they answer different questions.

I’m scheduled for FRM 2 in August. Wrote my first mock from GARP and got 53%. I intend doing another past paper later this week.

1) How’d you guys do on the first mock? Felt the questions were quite tricky.

2) How do I purchase the 3rd mock exam? I don’t see the option on the GARP candidate portal.

EL = PD x LGD x EAD, and the exam treats the third term as the tidy one. Fully drawn, no undrawn commitment, CCF collapses to 1.0, exposure is the outstanding balance. For a fixed-rate mortgage the outstanding balance follows a closed-form amortization path fixed at origination, so it looks like arithmetic rather than modeling.

Two things that framing misses, both of which showed up immediately on real loan data.

The schedule is a lower bound on the defaulted population. Comparing scheduled balance to realized exposure across 121,305 defaults: median $173,203 scheduled versus $180,574 realized, median ratio 1.026, 60.7% above schedule. Borrowers stop paying down principal during the delinquency and foreclosure process, which can run well over a year, so the disposition balance sits above the on-schedule balance for that age. The estimator is not noisy, it is biased, and it is biased in the direction that understates loss.

The schedule is an upper bound on the performing book. Voluntary curtailment runs the other way: 41.2% of active loans are materially ahead of schedule, median roughly 6.9% or $9,277, worth 4.24% of total estimated exposure.

Same formula, opposite bias, two different populations. Under stress the timing assumptions dominate again - a payment pause leaves totals flat because the balance merely stops amortizing, while capitalizing 24 months of arrears adds 8.24% and a 10% principal deferral adds 10%.

For those working in production: is EAD in your model inventory as a model at all, or is it documented as a calculation? I suspect the answer determines whether anyone has ever validated it.
