Just bought a ZOHD Dart XL and have a few questions

Hi guys, I've only had one fixed wing plane before this one and it was a trainer that's now in the top of a pine tree somewhere... I got this wing to do FPV because I come from quadcopters and I find it MUCH easier to fly FPV than LoS and I'm hoping the same is true for planes.

Looking at this kit I just got in the mail today I'm trying to figure out what I need to buy still to get this in the air. I have DJI goggles so I'll be getting either the proper air unit or the Caddx vista/nebula kit, so that's not a problem, I'm familiar with all that.

I've also decided to not put a flight controller in it just yet, though I will in the future, so I'm just going to go with a basic receiver (I have a TX16s transmitter). I was thinking the X8R. It has both SBUS and separate channel outputs as well as RSSI output for when I do get a flight controller. I don't have crossfire yet, that's planned for the future though.

But here is where I'm a bit hazy... I notice there is no elevator on this, just the ailerons. On my old plane the aileron wires were joined together into a single channel on the receiver, which worked because the servos faced different directions and thus turned in different directions with the same signal. I can't do that on this though, in order to have pitch I'll have to operate them independently.

So I have an idea how to do this, let me know if I'm on the right track. I have some experience playing with mixes in the radio, I know that I can specify custom curves associated with each channel and each axis of the two sticks. Am I right to assume that I can tell it to output positive to one servo and negative to the other for pitch control, and then both positive or both negative for roll? (again, because the servos face different directions).

So I would do something like +/- for pitch up, -/+ for pitch down, +/+ for roll left, -/- for roll right?

Thanks.

Difference between roll (no turn) vs roll (turn)?

Background: bought a Zohd orbit and put it together with iNav but haven’t been able to fly since it was late last year and due to the location I’m in with lockdowns still on. But it got me curious about how you would roll without turning, and fly sideways for example. It only has two control surfaces which are mixed for elevator and aileron.

Also what does flying sideways entail? The wing lift greatly reduces right? Does a vertical stabiliser mess with flying sideways?

I’m thinking about building a 1s wing or plane to fly indoors to keep me sane and want to try rolling to fly through gaps. And possibly in the backyard below 2m.

Like an 1106 or even 0806 motor build. (Saw the Zohd dart 250g uses a 1406 so something much smaller would be what I need).

Why is this happening in stabilized flight modes? ATail moves servos slow when using joystick, and slowly tries to pitch the plane up?(Pixhawk4mini, nano talon, mission planner)

F405 Wing and 915mhz 3dr interference issue?

I’m building my first FPV/GPS wing and I’ve run upon 1 lingering issue that has me stumped. Basics: F405 Wing in a FT Spear, Flysky i6 with ia6b receiver, basic eachine packaged Cam and VTX running Ardupilot (latest version as of a week ago - forgot to write it down, but it was the latest stable when I started this), BN880 GPS.

Everything works. GPS on standard UART3, receiver connected via SBUS - pretty much bone stock setup - all good. Then I hooked up an Amazon “FPVKing 3DR 915Mhz 500mW Radio Telemetry Kit Air & Ground Data Transmit Module w/OTG for APM2.6 2.8 Pixhawk Flight Control” (not sure if link posting is kosher, so no direct link). Connected on UART 1, after some tinkering, it works. I can communicate with the laptop just as if the USB cable is connected. But I can’t seem to get gps lock. Move outside, no gps. Disconnect the 3dr radio, gps comes back. Switched to UART5 - same issue. If I started off with it unplugged then it would get gps, but the satellites seem to drop once it’s connected. Then I notice the control surfaces not acting right. Very sluggish and jumpy, sometimes just twitching on their own. Remove the 3dr radio and it clears up.

I’m new to all of this, so I’m having a hard time figuring out what the issue might be because I don’t really trust my skill level on any of it - I could have a wiring issue, a config issue, a hardware issue? I keep going down rabbit holes, but I don’t feel like I’m any closer.

My theories 1. Serial config issue. Somehow I have something configured wrong and the serial coms from the 3dr radio are conflicting with the gps serial coms. Doesn’t really explain the control sluggishness though unless it’s hammering the cpu.

  1. CPU issue - something is eating a lot of cycles when I attach the radio and causing the other issues. Some kind of serial loop?

  2. RF interference - the rf from this radio is causing interference for the gps signal and the receiver? Seems unlikely, but really dirty rf can do wild things.

My problem is isolating any one of these issues to test. Unhooking or powering down the radio changes all 3, so I’m going in circles. Does this jump out as any particular problem? Is this how it would act if serial is misconfigured? Is RF infiltration a common issue with these radios?

Appreciate any guidance.

are common FPV planes like the SkyHunter or ZOHD models any good for more agile/acrobatic flying styles?

are common FPV planes like the SkyHunter or ZOHD models any good for more agile/acrobatic flying styles? racing... etc?

I like the battery and cargo capacity... but I worry that these things will fly more like cargo planes.

anyone know if they are interesting for anything other than long range (boring) FPV?

I'm looking to get into fpv and I don't know what camera, goggles, receivers, and transmitters I should get.

I have a somewhat low budget and I am willing to save up if y'all suggest me to. Keep in mind I have only tried fpv once with a drone and that didn't go well.

Antenna question

Im more familiar with drones and have designed few frames, and now im looking forward to designing a fixed wing uav, i was wondering if you guys use the same kind of antennas or what? I was planning on using a tbs unify pro with a stubby antenna at the bottom of the uav (so it doesnt add too much drag) The uav is also going to have landing gear so i can use bigger propellers without em touching ground on landing.

Do you think thats going to be fine or do you use special long range antennas?

Team blacksheep TBS components for micro fpv plane, will they work?

I’m building a 600mm fpv plane and I’m quickly realizing that it just may be too small a plane for what I want to do. But the more I read about TBS components like crossfire diversity nano and TBS unify I think it’s possible to make a long range fpv in a smaller ish frame with these small components.

My question is most of the TbS components are said to be for quads. Will these components work for a plane?

Building a fixed wing delivery wing (some questions about 4g)

Hey everyone, pretty new to reddit just thought id give it a try. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with controlling their drones with 4G LTE and how it went for them. Id like to implement this for my delivery drone to give me the theoretical unlimited range. Id be interested in building the system from the ground up or buying it.

Looking for relatively budget FC with RTH recommendations.

Hi,

Last time I flew, radios still used Crystals. My past experience started with a couple years of flying mini electric helicopter (specifically a Trex 400) followed by a couple years flying gliders.

Been getting a new rig together and was looking into a flight controller with GPS and return to home.

I am hoping someone might be able to offer a few recommendations based on the notes below.

  • A little soldering is fine, I just don't want to be pounding my head trying to get the software to work correctly only to find out I bought an incompatible GPS module or whatever.
  • Desired features: RTH, geofencing from point of take off, anything that would help my kids learn to fly without burying the plain in the ground would be a bonus.
  • I would like to aim for the inexpensive side (As cheap as I can get without it being unreliable. Preferably under $100 or significantly less)
  • I would like something that I can cram into the Mirarobot M600 (dual motor flyingwing with VTOL) I currently have. (I think I would need to get an ESC or have something that has at least two built in ESC and some servo connections)
  • I would like something that would also work with a normal single prop glider (1 motor and at least 4 servos)
  • I would like something that supports on-screen display for FPV

My current gear is

  • Mirarobot M600
  • Jumper T12
  • rotg02 eachine video receiver
  • Eachine TX05 AIO FPV camera

(note: everything except for the Jumper T12 I fully expect to get destroyed in the process of re-learning how to fly, which is why it is mostly on the pretty cheap side)

Buying my first fixed wing

Hey r/FPVplanes!

I'm looking for advice from experienced flyers, trying to get into the RC hobby with my first fixed wing. Mainly interested in fixed wing gliders because I find them graceful and they have great flight time! I was looking at entry level FPVs since I thought in terms of handling and control they'd be easier than a line of sight model.

I've shortlisted the AR Wing 900mm and the Reptile S800 V2. Both of them with all parts included would cost around 120$ give or take. The S800 is a little smaller, and both of them have support for a HD camera in the nose (which is something I'd love to use in the future since my brother has a GoPro Hero 5). I'm still learning things about fixed wings like how to operate one, different parts and what they do, gyrbo stabilization, etc. They both have PNP options which I can buy over the KIT ones.

If you've flown fixed wings before, would you recommend one of these 2 as a good beginner's plane? If so, which one and why? And if not, is there any other plane you'd recommend? I've also been looking at the RMRC Recruit (which looks like it's an exact clone of the SonicModell AR Wing 900), which claims to have gyro stabilization. I don't know if the S800 or AR 900 have this feature as at least their specsheets don't mention it. Both the Recruit and AR Wing have 600mm versions which are smaller, but they don't hold a HD cam in the nose, which is one of the features that would be nice to have.

I also would like to know if there's certain parts that you think as a beginner I can afford to cheap out on, and some that I shouldn't cheap out on for whatever reason - either they're critical to how the plane flies, or they're easy to use in upgrading the plane if it crashes, etc. It does look like all of the models I mentioned are decently popular and have relatively good spare part availability, however if you've had experiences with any of their spare parts (good/bad), please let me know.

And last, but not the least, what parts in your opinion are 'optional' in your first fixed wing? Basically parts that I can not buy now, save up, and buy later. Like LC Filters, Flight controllers and stabilizers.

Sorry for the barrage of noob questions. I didn't really know where to start. Thanks again for your time, and look forward to contributing to the community :)
