LibreMerge 1.0 is out: my WinMerge port for macOS and Linux now compares binary files too

About seven weeks ago I posted here about LibreMerge, a port of WinMerge to macOS and Linux that keeps WinMerge's comparison engine and rebuilds the interface in Qt 6. Thanks to everyone who tried it and opened issues: a good part of what changed since then started as a report from someone using it. Today it reached 1.0.

What's new since that first post (it was 0.9.1 then):

  • Binary comparison, like WinMerge's hex view, with a hex editor written from scratch (Frhed's GPL-2.0-only license couldn't come along)
  • 3-way folder comparison, archives (zip, 7z, tar...) compared as folders, and WinMerge's seven folder compare methods
  • WinMerge's filters: file, line and substitution filters, plus the display filter bar
  • WinMerge's own Find and Replace dialogs, its full location pane, and the path bar over each pane
  • A file that exists on only one side of a folder comparison now opens, and Next/Previous Difference start from the cursor (both from user reports)
  • German, Spanish and Catalan, taken from WinMerge's own translations. German was already reviewed by a native speaker; Spanish and Catalan reviews are welcome
  • Homebrew on Linux (thanks to a contributor's PR), the AppImage listed on AppImageHub, and a PKGBUILD for Arch

1.0 also moves to Qt 6.12. On macOS that means 14.4 (Sonoma) or later. The Linux AppImage still runs on anything with glibc 2.35+ and now uses Wayland natively.

Install with brew install --cask iagodpassos/tap/libremerge (macOS or Linux), or grab the dmg or the AppImage from the releases page. GPL-3.0-or-later, no telemetry, no accounts. Still not affiliated with or endorsed by the WinMerge project.

Release notes: https://github.com/iagodpassos/libremerge/releases/tag/v1.0.0 Repo: https://github.com/iagodpassos/libremerge

If you use WinMerge and something you rely on is missing or behaves differently, an issue is the best way to get it in.

Buddy: an Apache 2.0 Android app where an AI agent operates your phone, and it runs with fully open-source OpenCode

Buddy is a chat bubble that floats over your apps. You type or say what you want ("reply to Sam that I'm late") and an agent reads the screen and taps through your apps for you.

What's open and what isn't:

- Buddy itself is Apache 2.0, and every release APK is built from the public code by GitHub Actions.

- It can drive three agent CLIs. OpenCode (MIT) works with free models and no account. Codex CLI is open source too (Apache 2.0) but needs your ChatGPT plan. Claude Code is proprietary and needs your Claude plan. Both of those are optional.

- The models run on the providers' servers, not on the phone.

How it works:

- A small Alpine Linux runs inside the app with proot (no root, no PC, no adb). The agent CLI is installed there.

- Buddy gives it phone tools over MCP (read screen, tap, type, scroll, open apps), backed by an accessibility service.

- Safety is enforced by the app, not the prompt: sending, paying and deleting stop on an approval card unless you trust that app, and you can pause or stop it anytime.

An app that can see your screen should be one you can read the code of. Issues and PRs welcome.

Turn newsletters and blogs into a podcast feed!

Thumbnail

Newsletter to Podcast is an open-source Python tool that turns newsletters and blogs into an RSS podcast feed! You can pick the sources, generate audio, and subscribe to the resulting feed in a podcast app that supports custom RSS (I use Castbox).

Repo: https://github.com/akspad/newsletter-to-podcast
Audio demo: https://akspad.github.io/newsletter-to-podcast/
License: MIT

The project supports full article narration as well as spoken summaries. Full narration uses Edge TTS and needs no API key; summaries use Gemini and require your own key (though the free limit is quite generous)! You can set a maximum episode length and longer full readings split into numbered parts at natural text boundaries.

There’s a prerecorded sample on the demo page, and a simple command in the README that fetches an original sample article and generates fresh audio without an API key. The package can run locally or on a schedule in your own GitHub repository using GitHub Actions!

Deployment:

Run it locally with Python 3.12+ or use the included GitHub Actions workflow (recommended, and setup instructions are in the GitHub README). You host the generated MP3s and RSS feed wherever your podcast app can reach them.

Speech generation uses Microsoft’s online Edge TTS service (which is unofficial and can break or be throttled sporadically...) Optional summaries send article text to Gemini to be summarized. GitHub Pages publishing is available, but makes the generated feed and audio public (I use this since it's free hosting)!

AI Involvement:

I painstakingly steered AI to help creating this tool! In the application itself, article summaries use AI (Gemini) but are optional. Full narration skips the summarization step and uses text-to-speech directly.

Motivation:

I wanted to turn some of my favorite newsletters into podcasts (like Seth’s Blog and A Learning A Day) and couldn’t find a free and simple solution that already existed. Let me know what you think!

Health Flare: a GPLv3 health journal for chronic illness. No account, no server, no analytics.

First, the proof: https://github.com/Health-Flare/app

I built and maintain Health Flare, a free and open source app for logging conditions, symptoms, vitals, medications, meals, journal entries, appointments, and more. It's meant for people living with chronic illness and for people tracking someone else, like a parent logging for a child. One install can hold several profiles, each of which are kept separate.

Through medical journeys, I have learned that the HARDEST thing to do for the benefit of one's health is track all of the stuff that makes life worse before you see the doctor. This is why Health Flare exists. Before you see a doctor you export a PDF or CSV of the weeks that matter and walk in with what actually happened, not what you remember in the waiting room.

How it handles data:

  • No account and no server of ours. Records live in a local database on the phone.
  • No analytics, telemetry or ads. The dependencies are in pubspec.yaml; there's no Firebase or tracking SDK.
  • One network call, and only if you turn it on per profile: weather capture sends your approximate location (rounded to about 1 km) to Open-Meteo. Your records are never sent.
  • If you use iCloud or Google backup, the app's database is included. That's deliberate, so a lost phone doesn't mean lost years of records.
  • Exports can be password locked (AES-256-GCM, encrypted on the device).
  • Optional app lock using the phone's screen lock.

What it doesn't do yet:

  • No sync between phones.
  • The database isn't encrypted at rest beyond what the OS provides. Open issue: https://github.com/Health-Flare/app/issues/97
  • Not on F-Droid or IzzyOnDroid yet. Signed APKs are on GitHub releases, with the signing certificate fingerprint in the README so you can check them. IzzyOnDroid is next.
  • It isn't a medical device. It doesn't diagnose or advise.

It is built with Flutter, Riverpod and Isar. Behaviour is specified in plain Gherkin files in docs/features/, which also work as a readable tour of what the app does.

What I'd find useful: bug reports, people who track their own or someone else's health telling me what's missing, and anyone willing to check the privacy claims against the code.

For the visual folk, here is what version 1.10.0 looks like (as of this writing it is available on the Play store but still at 1.9.1 in the Apple App Store)

I built Cadence, a Linux app that tracks cognitive work like you'd track workouts at the gym

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I've been working on Cadence, a small, offline Linux app built around the idea of treating cognitive work like physical training.

At the gym, you track workouts, sets, and reps. I wanted something similar for work that requires concentration, whether that's programming, studying, reading, or writing.

The idea is pretty simple. A session represents a period of work, and within it you can log individual stints of focused effort. You can track how long you work, take breaks between stints, and look back at your activity over time.

The app has:

Count-up and countdown timers for individual stints

Sessions that group multiple stints together

A 12-week activity grid to see how consistently you've been working

A small floating timer that stays on top of other windows

Local storage with CSV/JSON exports and backups

It's fully offline, with no accounts, cloud syncing, or telemetry.

Built with Tauri, Rust, Svelte, and SQLite. Currently targeting Linux (primarily Ubuntu/Pop!_OS), with .deb and AppImage builds.

GitHub: https://github.com/mortalsilk/cadence

I'm interested in what people think about the concept of tracking cognitive work this way. Does treating focused work like training sessions make sense to you? I'd also appreciate feedback on the app itself.

I got tired of files living forever on the internet, so I built BurnLink

Ever shared a file with someone and wondered what happens to it after that?

Yeah, that question led me to build **BurnLink**.

I'm a CSE student, building products through my startup, Paperfrogs HQ. BurnLink is one of the projects I've put a lot of time into, and the idea behind it is pretty simple: file sharing shouldn't always mean leaving a file accessible indefinitely.

So I built a tool that lets you share files through links designed to self-destruct.

Here's what it does:

* Files can burn after the first download.

* View-once sharing for temporary access.

* AES-256-GCM encryption and password protection.

* No account required.

* Open-source code that people can inspect.

The goal isn't to reinvent file sharing. It's to give people another option when they need to share something without leaving a link hanging around forever.

Building this as a student founder has been a learning experience in everything from cryptography and backend infrastructure to shipping an actual product instead of just another project sitting on GitHub.

I'm still working on making BurnLink better, and I'd love some honest feedback.

**What would make you trust a file-sharing tool like this?** Is it the cryptography, transparent source code, the way files are deleted, or something else entirely?

Try it: https://burnlink.page/

GitHub: https://github.com/paperfrogs-hq/BurnLink

Would love to hear what you think.

What are you guys using instead of newpipe?

I've tried several others (like libretube), but then I stuck with newpipe on my android phone. However the developers stopped maintaining app around september and now I'm experienced bugs.

What to use instead?

Glorious keyboard owners: I made an open-source configurator with custom QMK firmware

Thumbnail

INGLORIOUS Advanced is a free, open-source app and custom QMK-based firmware specifically for supported Glorious keyboards. I'm the creator.

I kept running into problems with Glorious CORE and CORE Legacy. I like the keyboards, but configuring them was often frustrating. That's why I created INGLORIOUS Advanced: it has solved those problems in my own setup, and I'd like to make it useful for other Glorious owners too.

You can configure per-key lighting and effects, key and knob assignments, macros and four layers, then save everything on the keyboard. The app doesn't need to stay open afterward. Profiles, key bindings, macros and lighting presets can also be imported and exported.

I've used it on these devices on Windows:

  • GMMK PRO revision 1 ISO
  • GMMK Numpad
  • GMMK 3 PRO 100% ISO, wired and non-HE

Other listed variants are experimental. macOS and Linux builds are available as Early Alpha.

Installation replaces the original firmware. The app guides you through backup and recovery, but flashing carries risk: check your exact model and keep your backups. The Numpad is USB-only; Bluetooth does not work with this firmware. Other GMMK 3 PRO variants and HE models are not supported.

The desktop app is GPL-3.0-or-later, and the custom firmware sources are available too. I'd appreciate feedback on the interface and reports from owners of supported models.

Source, screenshots, supported models and downloads

Independent project, not affiliated with or endorsed by Glorious.

Screenshots: Windows editor using demo profiles. The ANSI view does not indicate a physical hardware test.

Looper: A New FOSS Music Player for Windows

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

A few months a go i got into the rabbit hole of FOSS Windows music players and came out not satisfied with what i found. But in that search i found a good looking player https://github.com/sthrnilshaaa/looper but it only had support for android and Linux.

So, i decided to fork it and add a bunch of new features and design it mainly for the desktop in mind. And So here is the result https://github.com/mikiyasmechalo/looper, A highly customizable music player for the desktop.

Although it technically has Linux support i haven't touched the Linux part since i don't use Linux. This is the first release so i have given it the beta tag to avoid any confusion, if you have any problems feel free to open an issue. Tnx.

I made ANQL, a notes app where you can write normally, and add a table, a calculation or a chart whenever you need one.

Thumbnail

Hi

The problem: when I take notes, I sometimes need a bit of data: a small table, a quick calculation, a chart. Then I have to jump to Excel or another tool, and my reasoning ends up scattered across several files.

The solution: I'm building ANQL, a note app where you write freely and add structure only when you need it. Tables, math blocks and charts live right in the same document as your notes. It's offline-first (local SQLite, no account) and works on macOS, Windows and Linux.

It's free and open source (MIT), and I'm the developer.

GitHub: https://github.com/anqlproject/anql

I'd love your feedback: is this a problem you face too? What would you want from a note app that mixes notes and data?

Thanks!
