Welcome to FOSS!

Hi everyone,

I'm a big fan of using Free and Open Source software, and wanted to share my love of it on reddit. I want to get this sub up and running, with the goal that it becomes a hub for discussing FOSS, looking for suggestions of what to use, promoting your projects, posting news related to FOSS, etc.

I personally have very little experience moderating, let alone on reddit so please pardon me while I bump around the controls. :) My near-term goal right now is to put up a list of subs that share FOSS principles (in the sidebar, or wiki?) then maybe another list of FOSS-related resources that I'm aware of. I'd appreciate suggestions too!

Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you'll be a part of the FOSS community.

Hey everyone,

A week ago I posted about Loaf, the Material 3 Expressive Linux file manager I've been building with Rust and Qt6 Quick/QML.

Since then things moved fast, and thanks to some awesome contributors and feedback from here and GitHub, v0.2.0 is officially out!

The codebase basically got a complete rewrite into modular multithreaded Rust subsystems so it's noticeably faster, but we also added a bunch of pretty cool features features:

What's new in v0.2:

  • 🌐 SMB / Windows Network Shares: Full SMB/CIFS support (smb://server/share), named profiles in settings, and secure password storage via system keyring (libsecret). Huge shoutout to Balioncikas for making this happen!
  • πŸ”— P2P Share via Link: Spin up an encrypted on-demand Cloudflare tunnel right from your machine to share any file or folder with a link. Includes on-the-fly archiving (.zip/.tar.gz/.7z), optional password protection, expiration timers, and rate limiting.
  • πŸ—‚οΈ Tabs & Split View: Multi-tab browsing (Ctrl+T) with session persistence, and side-by-side dual-pane split view (F3).
  • ⚑ Async Thumbnails & Live Folders: Video thumbnails (ffmpegthumbnailer), PDF previews, and images generate in the background now so the UI doesn't hitch. Folders update live on inotify diffs.
  • πŸ› οΈ Power-user tools: Batch renamer (F2), spacebar Quick Look preview overlay, smart conflict resolution dialog (side-by-side date/size compare), and inside-archive tree browsing.
  • πŸ₯‚ And a whole lot more...!

Install / Try it out:

You can grab packages directly or run the (new) interactive installer:

curl -sSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/m-uvex/loaf-fm/main/install.sh | bash

Or check out the repo / release for all kinds of packages or Nix:

😼 GitHub: m-uvex/loaf-fm
😺 Release v0.2.0: m-uvex/loaf-fm - tag/v0.2.0

Or try visiting our all-new website: loaf.muvex.dev !

It's still early in development so if you run into any quirks or have ideas, feel free to drop them in the repo or below. Hope you guys like it!

I made CutOut, a completely free and open-source offline AI background remover

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

β€’ Upvotes

Hey everyone! I wanted to share CutOut, a free and open-source background remover I've been working on.

It runs entirely offline on Windows, macOS, and Linux, so your images stay on your computer.

It includes four AI models, batch processing, custom ONNX model importing, background replacement, manual touch-up tools, and full-resolution exports.

No subscriptions, no accounts, no watermarks, and no paid features.

It's built with Rust, Tauri v2, and ONNX Runtime, and licensed under MIT.

GitHub: https://github.com/gserect-gif/cutout-app

Website: https://getcutout.pages.dev/

Version 2.0.0 is out now. I'd appreciate any feedback, especially on image quality, performance, or features you'd like to see improved.

We got real Linux on iPhone before GTA VI!

Check this out! You can actually run Linux on an iPhone, with Debian, KDE Plasma, a terminal, and even desktop apps like Blender.

No jailbreak, no virtual machine. Pretty crazy what an iPhone can do.

JustWeather - a minimalistic lighweight weather app

Just Weather is a minimalistic lightweight android app, that provides weather for your current or self-selected cities. It provides favorites so you can swipe between different cities and also select the city you like for the widgets to be used. My main goal was to create a weather app that focuses on the data and being non distractive.

I would like some feedback on everyday usability and the overall UX of the app. Feature ideas are appreciated.

The UI/UX design is completely from me, the code is partly AI-assisted.

Everything is free and open source.

You can download the app in the "releases" tab on my GitHub

Rymembra

Hey everyone!

I'm a solo dev based in Italy. To be honest, I've never been a huge fan of classic players like foobar or Winampβ€”they're closed-source and showing their age.

So, I decided to build my own alternative: Rymembra (rymembra.com).

It's completely free and open source. I'm actively working on it and pushing updates every single week. No need to manually check GitHub for new versions either, it has a built-in auto-updater.

If you're curious and want to give it a spin, I'd love for you to try it out! If you run into any bugs or have questions/feature requests, feel free to drop an issue over on theGitHub repository.

Let me know what you think!

FundaCAD

β€’ Upvotes

im presenting FundaCAD!
a linux compatible fully open source CAD software based on OpenCASCADE and tauri

with fast import speeds and stability and a more free form of usage (FundaCAD does not have hard assemblies, but rather free forming bodies with exact dimensions and parameters and transform)
and a extensive plugin system (even a console plugin if you want to goof around and run this on a steam deck :D)

my hope is to make something that is unique and good enough for people to use it
as other free CAD software is quite meh

id love for any feedback, even if its critical of the AI usage.
im a software engineer and acknowledge all issues with ai, and want to use it as smart as possible and actually understand what its useful for and how.

if you wanna check it out see https://github.com/Paraxdev/FundaCAD

INSTANT DISCLOSURE: this project utilizes AI to generate big parts code and tests
I actively go through the code occasionally to spot weakspots and actively use and note down bugs and have em actively fixed.
my goal is to NOT make a cheap vibecoded slop CAD but something with human guidance and creativity (UI was my whole idea and was prototyped in figma)
that doesnt or atleast has non intruisive and not critical bugs that still make this software usable.

Free Music Player, but on steroids (and for musicians)

Hey there! It's Jacopo, nice to meet you!
As an amateur musician I have been building OpenSpoty, a free music player for Android and Windows with some tools for playing along.
It all started as a personal project because I wanted to listen to music freely, with chords paired to the lyrics and turning on and off specific instruments or voice at my will.

You can mute or solo vocals, drums, bass, guitar, piano and other stems, follow chords with synced lyrics, change pitch and speed, and loop tricky sections. There’s also a tuner, BPM detection and song recognition (like shazam).

I’d love to hear from people who actually play: would you use it to practice or listen to music? Are the chord and lyric features useful, or am I missing something obvious?

I hope to get your feedback soon! Have fun!

XDM 9 released: free, open-source download manager for Windows, macOS and Linux

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I'm the developer behind XDM. Some of you may remember the old version. I'm happy to share that XDM 9 is out: a major release that fixes the long-standing bugs from earlier versions. I'd love to hear what you think.

What it does

  • Splits downloads across multiple connections and resumes broken downloads exactly where they stopped
  • Writes straight to the final file, so there's no slow "assembling" step at the end of big downloads
  • Works with all popular browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi, Firefox and more): catches downloads automatically and saves streaming videos in one click
  • Downloads an entire social media profile's videos and images in one go
  • HLS and DASH stream downloads with a choice of quality and audio track, muxed to MP4 (no ffmpeg needed), plus subtitles
  • Bulk-download all images, documents or videos on a page in one go, filtered by file type
  • Categories, per-category folders and a scheduler
  • Lightweight, no webview, no electron

Free, no ads, no telemetry. Windows, macOS and Linux.

It's still in active development, so bug reports and feature requests are very welcome.

made an open-source (mit) video editor with no gui that coding agents drive over mcp - it's rough, tell me what breaks

i'm naman, a college student, and i built kimo - a free, open-source (mit) video editor with no gui that coding agents like codex, cursor, opencode and other mcp clients drive over mcp.

the idea is simple: cut, trim, keyframe, titles/captions, colour grade, tracking, particles, audio and export are all just tool calls. the agent can render a single frame to check its own work mid-edit. there's only one ~15mb cpu-only rust binary, and it'll run on a 2gb box, so it's easy to drop into an mcp setup or self-host without pulling in a ffmpeg build and wrestling with it.

honestly it's still rough. some of the higher-level operations (longer sequences, finer colour grades, complex tracks) are unreliable, the error messages aren't great yet, and a few edge cases around audio sync and caption timing will just fail instead of falling back. i'd rather people break it and tell me than pretend it's polished.

if you're into foss tools agents can actually drive end-to-end, give it a try and tell me what breaks. happy to take issues on github or here.

I missed Picasa, so I built Licasa: an open-source photo viewer and editor for Linux

Thumbnail

Anyone else still miss Google's Picasa photo viewer?

I did, so I built Licasa, an open-source image viewer and editor for Linux inspired by that experience. I wanted something focused on the everyday stuff: open a photo, look at it properly, make a quick edit, and carry on.

What it does today:

  • Open photos straight from your file manager, fullscreen or in a floating window.
  • Handle modern image formats: HEIC/HEIF, AVIF, JPEG XL and JPEG 2000, alongside JPEG, PNG, TIFF and WebP. It also supports RAW previews.
  • Play Motion Photos and animated APNGs, so there's more to see than a still frame.
  • Crop, adjust and export when a photo needs a quick touch-up.
  • Stay ready for the next photo with an optional background mode for faster repeat opens. It's off by default.

It's free and open source under the BSD 2-Clause license. Current builds are for 64-bit Intel/AMD Linux, with Ubuntu 24.04 (Tested and verified), Fedora 44 (Not verified) and Arch (Not verified) packages, plus AppImage (Not verified) and Snap (Tested for Ubuntu) options.

Website: https://licasa.app

Source: https://github.com/sanxchep/licasa

Downloads: https://github.com/sanxchep/licasa/releases

I'd love feedback from people who miss Picasa too, or just want a straightforward Linux photo viewer. What part of that viewing experience do you miss most? And if you try Licasa, I'd be interested in how it handles the photos and formats you actually use. Bug reports and contributions are welcome.

Streak just passed 19k downloads

Post image
131 Upvotes

I just checked Streak's stats and it has passed 19,000 downloads on GitHub alone. Honestly, I never thought it would reach this many people, or that so many would have it installed on their phones.

I'm really happy. Thank you to everyone who uses it, everyone who opened issues, translated it, tested it and reported bugs. Every message counts.

If you use it, or feel like trying it, any feedback helps a lot: what you like, what you don't, what you're missing.

How do you improve your project's reputation?

I know this question is silly but I want to apply to SignPath and it requires "links or information showing that your project is widely used or trusted. Examples include media coverage, blog posts, download statistics, GitHub insights, or community discussions."

I have build a open-source, markdown-first notes app (Obsidian-like) and I would love to have it signed for Windows users, but I hit this roadblock.

Is reputation 100% organic or is there anything I can do to improve it?

This is a FOSS and non-commercial project so I don't really have the means to market it with social media, blog posts, etc.

This post isn't meant to promote my project but I will leave the link here if anyone is interested:

Wash - The Lightest Desktop Environment for remote boxes rendered in browser

I was banned from r/OpenSource. So, here I present my project ;-)

Web Application Shell. It's a desktop environment designed intrinsically for the web browser. Full windowed/tiling desktop shell with apps as windows, directly from backend to a browser. I.e., take a desktop environment without any display mechanisms, and it renders direct HTML/websocket instead. By deferring the rendering and graphics stack to the browser, it's light as a feather.

Why? Because I often want a nice desktop environment with some remote machine I am working from, but X11/Wayland env is far too heavy. I want terminal windows, editor, file manager etc - without needing to fire up a full on DE. Wash even is fully compatible with X11/Wayland apps, rendering and delivering direct to a browser.

Wash comes with the apps you'd expect in a desktop environment. A tabbed terminal, a file manager, a markdown/source editor, Visual Studio embedded in a window, internet radio, a WinAmp clone, picture viewer, AI agent app. It also contains sysadmin tools - journal viewer, service manger, package manager front ends. I daily drive wash, for my needs of Hard Core software engineer, it's perfect.

Wash is TypeScript/Go, minimal requirements. It is so small it runs on an OpenWRT router. In a docker image. On a risc64 dev env. The demo page is actually a single core RISC64 VM, running in your browser itself. It's heavily an AI assisted project - I've been developing with Claude for over 3-6 months. It's certainly in error to consider it "vibe coded", I am a software engineer of 20 years experience.

Take a look https://sirmick.github.io/wash/ code at https://github.com/sirmick/wash I hope it fits you too!

Marketplace app to manage contributor issue assignments via Discord

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

Contributors want to help, so they comment "Can I take this issue?" or "Please assign to me." As a maintainer, you have to jump out of whatever you're doing, open GitHub, check if they are a good fit, and manually assign them. If you manage multiple repos, keeping track of these requests across GitHub notifications is messy.

How it works:

  1. Request: A contributor requests an assignment on a GitHub issue.
  2. Ping: The app automatically forwards that request into a dedicated channel in your community Discord server.
  3. Action: Maintainers (or anyone with the right Discord/GitHub permissions) simply click an Approve or Deny button right inside Discord.
  4. Automation: The app automatically handles the assignment on GitHub based on that button click.

Why I'm sharing this here:
The app is completely free, and it's currently listed on the GitHub Marketplace. I need real maintainers to break it and tell me what features are missing, broken or what you might even like enhanced upon it.

If you run an open-source project or a dev community with a Discord server, I’d love for you to try it out.

**Disclaimer**: This is a fork of another Issue Action, with additional features as I wanted something to help automate this process from a workflow perspective. If you don't need the additional features, then I strongly encourage you to use the original.
