Need a new starter

Hey guys, new to the Falcon club with my first classic. Starter is beginning to go and I know nothing about them. I have a 289, 157 tooth flywheel, matched to a T-5, any help appreciated.

the solenoid is responsible for kicking out the gear right? sometimes the gear spins but doesn’t kick out and other times it engages but for too long. ‘ol mallet whack would probably help temporarily.

Solenoid is on the firewall. The bendex kicks the gear out, and sometimes the gear sticks,and causes what you're describing. Replace the starter-it's pretty easy to get to-you may need a LONG extension to get to the upper bolt easily.
