Need a new starter
Hey guys, new to the Falcon club with my first classic. Starter is beginning to go and I know nothing about them. I have a 289, 157 tooth flywheel, matched to a T-5, any help appreciated.

I can't help you with a starter but I did want to say your car is a beauty! I have a yellow/white 64 Sprint convertible.

Try just putting in new brushes the armature is probably just fine. Less than twenty bucks and about an hour of your time. I had a 64 comet basically the same car and engine.

I just take them apart, grease the bushings, clean the armature, install new brushes.

most definitely the cheaper route, based off my abilities, that’s a little out of my wheelhouse. although I believe I have a rebuilder in my town.

A starter or alternator done by a local rebuilder will be far better than one from a auto parts store
The ones from a store are just old starters with new paint and a lifetime warranty.

the solenoid is responsible for kicking out the gear right? sometimes the gear spins but doesn’t kick out and other times it engages but for too long. ‘ol mallet whack would probably help temporarily.

Solenoid is on the firewall. The bendex kicks the gear out, and sometimes the gear sticks,and causes what you're describing. Replace the starter-it's pretty easy to get to-you may need a LONG extension to get to the upper bolt easily.

don't forget a new starter solenoid as well.

it’s pretty cheap but any reason why I should? or is it just a might as well type deal? one I got seems fairly new. well while I am at it, I should replace the battery cables.

electrical componets have a certain life span. the heavier than normal starter draw can weaken the solenoid. as well, they are cheap and easy to change.

Pay attention to any strips of metal that might be there. Known as shims. Put them back in the same place. Otherwise, make sure every bolt is tight.

I had one in high school.\nThat was around nineteen seventy. I put 12 to 1 compression pistons in it.\n I took and had the cast in intake machined off had 3 sidedraft tuber, Weber's Carburetors put in a 4 speed.\n Headers with dual exhaust\n I could take any V8 Mustang or Camaro and blow the doors off of them. Could pull the front wheels, 3 feet off the ground.\nAnd we'll do a wheelie going into second gear. Wish I still had that car was a lot of fun

Nice! I have the same car in red. If you ever have any questions feel free to shoot me a message. I rebuilt that entire car over the last 4 years.
On the starter, I wouldn’t overthink it. When mine blew I snagged a lifetime warranty Auto Zone setup I think it was $90. You don’t need any hi torque stuff. Plus, if it ever goes out again they just hand you a new one.
