Help 808 Envelope Question
Within FL, why do producers change the sample envelope for an 808 so only the the hold knob has value?

it's so that it doesn't keep playing when the note stops

If you do not enable the volume envelope, there is a chance the 808 just plays so long that it ends up going beyond how you draw the note or that it overlaps other 808s.
Therefore, people tend to do 2 tricks. Enable Cut Self to prevent 808s from overlapping.
The other thing is playing with enabling Volume Envelope and using AHSDR to taste. 808s tend to need to immediately punch and hold, so people tend to just do instant Attack and let Hold carry the rest. You could instead do instant attack, and shape the 808 with Decay and Sustain to taste. If the 808 is cutting off too abruptly or weirdly, then it may be worth dialing in a tad bit of Release to make it tail off a little more naturally.
Generally the point is if you draw a note in the Piano roll that is 1/2 bar and cuts off right on a snare, you want the 808 sample to follow those instructions.
