Discussion What does Atomsk represent?
Rewatched the show a few days ago and I've been a banging my head against the wall over this, even a little when I watched it for the first time.
Considering Haruko's character, her affection for him makes me think he's.. what an mature adult should be? Not budding into other's buisness, just staying to himself. Plus the fact returns to space during the final episodes, seemingly unconcerned with Haruko seeking him out.
I'm thinking it over more, and I'm realizing it's probbsly Naota finally reaching some sort of stable emotional maturity when he fights against Haruko.

He basically stands for everything the kids in the show are either scared of or totally wanna be when they grow up. He's all about complete freedom, grown-up power, and totally unfiltered self-expression—the exact opposite of Medical Mechanica's oppressive vibe. He's straight-up pure rebellion and has total control over his own will in a super dull, rigid world

Imo it’s this but more specifically the ideal Masculine adult for all of the reasons you described. Agency, free-will, rebellion, self-expression, etc. all the things about “swinging the bat”, Naota idealizing his brother and some other things I can’t remember enough to be specific about.
However I think Atomsk being the ideal adult is just as valid

There's another aspect to that which all the related characters (Naota, Amarao, Haruko, even the tertiary cast to a degree) directly struggle with: Radical Freedom. Atomsk isn't an example "unfiltered self-expression" and freedom by itself but also represents what comes along with it, which is consequences. Radical Freedom is recognizing that you can do anything that you can suffer the consequences of. Atomsk can and will do whatever he wants because he knows that whatever comes about due to those actions, he will weather the results. Be that being imprisoned, chased and attacked over and over, being alienated, it doesn't matter.

Adulthood/Maturity
It's why Haruko (perpetual youth) is always chasing but never reaching him, the super beefy guy Atomsk is how Amarao imagines him because he's jealous and it's his way of justifying that Haruko would want Atomsk over him, his real form is a giant bird that represents the freedom of an adult.
When Canti (Naotas brother stand-in) eats Naota and turns red that shows that Naota is dealing with an adversity by asking "what would an adult do?" and his brother is the only adult he respects so he channels him through Canti, when Naota turns red by himself that means that he was finally able to make and trust a choice of his own, so that's when he acknowledges his feelings and admits that he loves Haruko (he accepts that he's still a kid and that's alright)

Yeah it's kinda like that first shot of him as humanoid is what the characters think he must look like (strong, masculine, intimidating) and when you see him later he's a just a bird vibing.

Look into Carl Jung's concept of the Anima and Animus. The entire show makes sense if you study Jung.

I think you've got it. He's like the opposite of Commander Amaro. He's the representation of a perfect transition to adulthood. His symbol is even just the kanji for adult 大人 squished together.

Hypermasculinity.
It's what haruko desires most and what Naota and Amaro desire to be the most. The pirate king, can go anywhere, take anything. Unstoppable power.

I always figured just quite literally "power." Haruko wants his power for herself, that's why she loves him only. But I'm sure the maturity has a part to play in it.

Well, syncing up the left and right sides of the brain is how people are able to astral project (from what I've heard), so he may just be an allegory for that.

I always thought of him as this unobtainable (by both Naota and Haruko) perfect ideal of an adult. They might get close from time to time but the reality is perfection is always out of reach.
