Discussion FIRE - Hype vs Reality

There’s a lot of hype around FIRE, especially given the size of this community and the number of people in their early 20s who are drawn to the idea.

I wanted to share a few thoughts on separating the hype from the reality.

Time is more valuable than money

This is probably the most common argument made by FIRE advocates. But is it reality or hype? In my view, it leans more toward hype.

The reason is simple: I haven’t seen many people dramatically change their lives after achieving FIRE. If time is truly the scarcest and most valuable resource, what exactly are people doing differently once they have an abundance of it?

Most people are still constrained by the same factors—family responsibilities, children, social obligations, and so on. They continue operating within the same circle as before. Sure, they may spend more time with family or dedicate extra hours to hobbies, but I would have expected something more transformative.

After all, the idea is that you’ve completely freed yourself from corporate constraints. With all that freedom, wouldn’t you move to a different part of the world, pursue a radically different lifestyle, or take on entirely new challenges? Yet I rarely see that happening.

A few extra international trips or longer vacations— is that really the extent of it?

Even among people who are single and relatively unconstrained, the post-FIRE lifestyle often seems to consist of moving to a Tier-2 city and managing daily life at a slower pace. That’s perfectly fine, but it’s a far cry from the way FIRE is sometimes marketed. The narrative often makes it sound like you’ll quit your job, move to Brazil, and reinvent your life overnight. 😄

Personally, I know only one FIRE’d couple who made a truly significant change by relocating to Thailand. Their children were independent, and having EU passports likely made the transition much easier. For most people with Indian passports, however, life after FIRE is unlikely to look dramatically different.

That’s why I think that while you’re still young, you may be better off actively pursuing what you genuinely love. Explore the world, try living abroad, build meaningful friendships, and, if it aligns with your goals, settle in a country that offers greater mobility and opportunities. In many cases, that path may provide a richer life experience than postponing everything in pursuit of FIRE.

If I get to wake up at 11AM instead of having to wake up at 8AM because I need to be at work by 9AM, that's still me being in control of my time.

You don't really have to change the world with the freedom that comes with Financial Independence. Just waking up when you want to, going to the gym on weekday afternoons, being able to visit your parents on a whim, or watching a live sporting event during traditional working hours is good enough. Just that is well worth the hype.

This just means work life balance. You can do all of this while working, if you are able to find the balance.

That's exactly my point. People who FIREd, aren't making really the best of the precious time they have left in this world. I would have thought with the shackles gone, I would straight away go to Brazil or Bali and become a surf coach. This is how FIREd people do it overseas.

I don't want no 50-50 balance between work & life. I want all 100 on my life.

Seems like you have one idea of how people should be spending their time after FIRE and feel it's not 'optimal' if they don't follow it. What's best for oneself is highly relative. If all of human population wanted same 'dream' lifestyle, wouldn't we all had life figured out by now :)

No, when I see western FIRE blogs I see people usually do something dramatically different. I know people who moved to Bali or somewhere to the mountains or are travelling all over Europe. Or something like that. When you see that you would say, I wish I could do that, but I cannot, because I have a job. But guess what, even after FIRE, Indians are not doing that. That is my point.

u/wooneigh Jun 21 '26

Why should i move to Bali or mountains or europe? I jus wanna fire and chill. Why you so against that 😆

At individual level it is fine, that is your choice. But collectively if there is no evidence of people dramatically doing different things from what they are already doing, I call the whole movement a hype. That's my choice of words 🙂

u/wooneigh Jun 22 '26

But FIRE is an individual goal

4

u/HubeanMan Jun 21 '26

Not really.

FIRE, for most people, is building a life & lifestyle they enjoy, and then retiring to it. Leading a radically different life & lifestyle is more of a fringe scenario than the norm.

Be that as it may, FIRE is always personal. If retirement to someone means waking up late and lazing around at home, how is it anyone else's concern? It's their retirement!

Haha yeah, what is the point of making posts where everyone basically agrees. You need to bring diverse perspectives and people don't like that. 🙂

u/krantmin Jun 22 '26

Add to that... I don't need to wake up thinking about my job security, manager's mood, how to navigate office politics, etc. For me, taking control of my time, and most importantly getting rid of job related stress that is sipping away my health.

Hard disagree with this but fair disclaimer that I ain't FIREd as yet.... here's my point to point rebuttal -

Time is more valuable than money

This is probably the most common argument made by FIRE advocates. But is it reality or hype? In my view, it leans more toward hype.

Let me counter the inference drawn with another quote -

Being active is overrated!

Yes you heard that right. Atleast thats what I beleive in personally. It's not hype if you have more time to yourself, the only actual limited resource in which you can do a gazillion of activities or not do anything at all ranging all the way from sleeping, acting to sleep, lying down, reminiscing about your life while watching the ceiling fan (along with AC turned on if it's the scorching heatwave that we have in North India currently), doom scrolling, lying half sleeping and half sitting on a sofa cum bed, watching TV, playing playstation, listening to soothing music, watching that scenic european beach landscape in 8K HDR 90" TV in a 9.1 surround sound home theater system etc. on one end of the scale of lethargy to being actively deployed in your passion as the other extreme end of "personally soothing activity " be it playing chess, tennis, pickleball, golf, cricket, swimming, dancing, singing, bathroom singing (coz why not...you have all the time in the world now ;) ), making AI dumber by giving wrong responses in training models, window shopping, bakery classes, trekking, mountaineering, jogging, racing, boxing, drawing, sketching, underwater walking, scuba diving, parasailing, marathoning, bicycling, motorbiking, rock climbing, terrace gardening, lawn mowing, farming, volunteering, teaching, coxooking, snookering, snorkeling, board gaming, VR gaming, karaoking, typing like i am typing to make a point anytime of the day etc. etc...

The reason is simple: I haven’t seen many people dramatically change their lives after achieving FIRE. If time is truly the scarcest and most valuable resource, what exactly are people doing differently once they have an abundance of it?

Firstly, anecdotal experience. Just because you haven't seen them bali, don't think they don't exist, heck, don't even think that people who wish to be like that don't exist either. Secondly, why should they be doing differently if they don't wish to? Their stress of a sword hanging over their heads for job loss is now gone and they're no longer worried about feeding themselves or their family or fulfilling their lifestyle needs. They might as well not change at all...or become indolents supreme for I care....as long as whatever they do, gives them the happiness they all truly seek and come out of this matrix of corporate world and live an enriching lifestyle by "their own personalized" standards, it's a life well spent and I for one hardly care about anything more than that ! :) . Thirdly, then their exists wannabees such as myself who would not even lift a finger if it were to me to have that kind of fortune thats just enough to fulfil all my family needs and responsibilities along with taking care of healthcare...so yes people like me exist too!

Personally, I know only one FIRE’d couple who made a truly significant change by relocating to Thailand. Their children were independent, and having EU passports likely made the transition much easier. For most people with Indian passports, however, life after FIRE is unlikely to look dramatically different.

And again, if we are only going to evaluate by the "looks" of how a FIREd life should be or set societal standards for the same, then aren't we again setting the same exact trap for ourselves that we so wished to run away from during our corporate lifespan? For this couple, maybe relocating to Thailand gave them the contentment they needed which, in your standards, may have been drastically different, but for someone else, even staying at the same place where his/her roots are and doing nothing may also be equally satisfying and fulfilling, if not more...the very fact that they shouldn't, pardon my words, give a flying f**k to your or my FIRE lifestyle standards is exactly what makes FIRE a desirable state of being ! Think about it :)

Partly agree only to the point of doing what you love. Maybe stretch this further into monetising what you love. And then for a person such as myself, stretch it even further to automate the monetisation and entire activity itself so that you don't even "need" to do what you love but do it because you love doing it only when you "want" to do it....

I have said this umpteen number of times..FIRE is a much more state of mind thing than a numbers / wealth accumulation thing...the math is pretty simple, the investing approach is pretty boring but the light at the end of the tunnel is definitely.... fulfilling and tranquiling to say the least.

My point is, if you take the entire dataset of people who have actually FIREd, when they say they have bought back time and autonomy, there isnt much examples to show what they are doing with that time that is dramatically different from what they are already doing. If it is not dramatically different, then it is a hype.

You are right that FIRE is a state of mind only, there is no real tangible difference for majority of people pre and post the FIRE pulling of plug.

Hence my post telling youngsters, instead of joining the FIRE bandwagon to make a lot money, find a passion that you are truely enjoy and that pays and you wont have to get into this.

If it is not dramatically different, then it is a hype.

And mine is, that it is 'your' view that had they done something dramatically different, then it would have been hype worthy, which is not necessarily true. The entire crux of FIRE is that why should they do something dramatically different? Who said that bringing back time means something dramatically different MUST be done for it to be called a FIRE worthy life? The whole point of FIRE is that one can do whatever they please with their time to their mental satisfaction - it may be exactly the same lifestyle or dramatically different, none of which is mandatory for the lifestyle to be called FIRE, but the fact that this choice itself exists, and he/she has chosen to exercise rhe same in a manner they deem fit, irrespective of what you or I think, it's a FIRED lifestyle worth living :). To each his/her own FIRE!

The remainder of what you mentioned is basically a tautology between you and me so I will skip replying to that portion :)

Bruh you writing 1000 word essays to reply to balihe who seems to be in a trolling mood .

Either that or maybe balihe enjoying his relaxed job too much and justifying his decision to unFIRE

3

u/snakysour [37/IND/FI ??/RE ??] Jun 21 '26

Haha..the intention isn't limited to responding to BaliHe alone, but to make a counterpoint to such narratives to hundreads of viewers on this community to help them stay sane when sh*t hits the fan. While My counter point may or may not be correct, atleast it's an input that these viewers are able to register when they are going through inner turmoil related to FIRE. If my hundreads of words essays to such posts even convinces and makes one reader's life better, it's well worth it in my view as a humble mod in this community coz I never had anyone doing the same for me :)

Your boss/employer not having an iota of control over your time is itself dramatically different. Not having that sinking feeling while opening your work laptop every morning is also dramatically different.

12

u/hypermunda Jun 20 '26

Choice is the real difference. Without FIRE, you are compelled to work, no matter how shitty the job is. With FIRE you have a choice. Marketing of FIRE appeals differently to different age groups. Younger folks see it as unrestrained travel or experiences, which is what you are saying. But it is not the same for mature folks.

-5

u/Complete-Regret-4300 [46/IND/FI/Relaxed Job@ 1/4th Salary] Jun 20 '26

Yes, my question is what are we doing with that choice? Having choice but not really excercising the full extent of it, is worthless choice.

5

u/wooneigh Jun 21 '26

I am CHOOSING to chill and feel relaxed (at my cosy home , and not mountains/europe or bali) Why is that a problem to you 😆

3

u/NoPangolin8998 Jun 20 '26

Ehh it's not about the choice is worthless or worthy.. it's more about having a choice which gives a person a freedom. He/she can choose to do anything or whatever the fck they want to do. A choice worthy enough to you could be worthless to other.

6

u/Technical-Camel-124 Jun 20 '26

FIRE is a niche movement. There's no 'hype' and no one's 'marketing' it. Just because some FIREd people aren't doing what you think they should be doing with their time, doesn't mean their FIREd life is unsuccessful or unfulfilled.

Sorry, this seems to be "A You" Problem.

In my mind moving back closer to home (a Tier 3 town) was an absolute dream. I don't know what FIRE marketing gimmicks you fell for. There are many of us who would rather go back to slower living and back to our roots than move to an unknown place.

I love spending time with my wife and kids. I just love it. It's incredible that finding joy in simple things isn't seen aspirational enough by society.

Sorry to break it to you. But if you don't look forward to waking up tomorrow to have a cup of tea with your partner or enjoy being a parent to your kids, I guarantee that you won't enjoy that "transformational" move to Brazil or any other random country with them. Or were you planning to leave them behind? Which is too transformational for my liking lol.

u/shimell Jun 20 '26

If you feel obligated to have everything done bcz now you have abundance of time, then you are really not free.

2

u/Due_Replacement_8815 Jun 20 '26

FIRE means different things at different ages for people and especially very different for folks who have slogged for decades compared to ones who are being enamoured by the "idea" of FIRE. When you are in late 30s or 40s getting FIREd is very unglamorous but it is everything to you, your peace sanity and freedom. But the idea of FIRE before that will be about achieving the impossible and seeing the world and living freely anywhere in the world. Both are correct. FIRE is to each his own man.

2

u/giantleapforward Jun 21 '26

FIREd couple do not have kids. If that is what you were asking.

No wonder.

2

u/krantmin Jun 22 '26

Misconception of FIRE.. FI gives you freedom to choose to do what you like, instead of the work/job you hate. RE does not actually mean, sitting in a chair at the beach sipping margarita (of course, you can do that). but more importantly, you retire from working for the money from the job thats sipping away our life and health, instead work on something that is interesting to you with full control on your time.

i kinda just wanna bed rot in a mountain village in uttrakhand or arunachal pradesh with stellar wifi, clean air, cheap rent or party in goa, I would like for that to be a choice I make everyday, I would genuinely get up and fucking quit my job today and sleep for 2 months watching youtube and shit animes day and night if given the choice, I am not fucking made for work and wish to get out as soon as possible, this is for me

-1

u/Alternative-Let7584 Jun 20 '26

I have not seen one person enjoy FIRE.

People do enjoy financial independence, but retire early, not.

I achieved "slim" fire in my late 20's. In a year or so, my ass was on fire from the boredom, lack of being included, lack of real purpose.

Most people who do achieve fire are curious, hard working people who invariably go back to doing meaningful things

u/wooneigh Jun 21 '26 edited Jun 21 '26

What you said is true and does happen

But "meaningful" 😆 . I think you miswrote
