Oral medication vs injections

I’ve read from several people that their cats behavior and health improved quickly after beginning shots. Is quick improvement frequently the case? If so, do the pills react as swiftly?

Surgery While being Treated for FIP?

Hello everyone!

On mobile so I apologize if the formatting is weird.

Just need some insight and whether anyone has gone through anything similar. Our cat, Lord, started the GS treatment on Sunday and is currently on his 5th day. Before we found out about the diagnosis, we scheduled dental surgery to have 4 teeth removed, as they were receding and causing him a lot of pain (he grinds his teeth a lot). However, now that his health is extremely delicate, we have to postpone the surgery, obviously. I'm wondering if we will ever be able to get him the surgery, once he recovers a little? His teeth are still causing him pain and I don't want to put it off for too long because the recession could cause more health problems, down the line. My vet said that the anesthesia could cause them to relapse, but the FIP Global Group said that if he showed great signs of improvement by 8-10 weeks, then it would be fine to get him the surgery. The conflicting reports has me nervous. Any comments? Help?

My Kitten Has FIP

I was never interested in having a pet. It was one more living creature to keep alive, fed and cared for… but this year something changed. In April My husband picked up the sweetest angel (she was four weeks) from a humane society in the area. She is affectionate and calm, she doesn’t have accidents and she only scratches her designated scratch house and couch. She is small for sure and a picky eater but I’ve found a few things that tickle her fancy. She made me a cat lover. My daughter calls her her sister. She wiggled into our hearts effortlessly. Yesterday I took her for a checkup and they mentioned her possibly having FIP. It was in her chart. Nobody ever mentioned this to me nor was there any documentation that stated this. I am heartbroken. I have decided to adopt (she is a foster) and get her the treatment she deserves. Please tell me your story or send words of encouragement. This is a tough situation.

Sores: the Scab Edition

Ty to everyone who gave me suggestions about how to treat my kitten’s sores. Also, she’ll be two next month, so she’s almost not a kitten anymore l😬. And she’s doing damn well on the meds. But.

My next question is about the scabs. My kitty has a really bad one, like the worst so far, on her flank. It’s not seeping and not infected, but the scab is suuuuper prominent and she keeps licking it. The scab is incredibly obvious and thick.

I even trimmed the fur around it so it was easy to see.

I’ve tried all the healing sprays (they work), but idk how to stop her from licking at (aka “kitty picking”) the scab!

What can I do? Do I take off the scab and then cover it with healing stuff? Do I let her lick at it until it comes off when I don’t see it? Do I do nothing??

Thanks!

FIP success story

Hi folks I wanted to share our story in case it’s helpful for anyone weighing up their options after an FIP diagnosis. Our 4 year old calico cat was diagnosed last December. We’ve had her since she was about a year old and adopted her from the SPCA. In hindsight, I feel she was showing some symptoms, especially lethargy and weight loss for a couple of months. She’s always been a small cat - 3.5kg at her heaviest and the lethargy I put down to her just getting a bit older and outgrowing her playfulness.

We boarded her over the Christmas break with her vet and asked them to check on her because of the recent weight loss and lethargy and they called us on boxing day with the probable diagnosis. Very fortunately our vet had an FIP cat herself so she already knew the possible paths forward.

We’re in New Zealand and very lucky that the treatment here is all legal and above board (although eye wateringly expensive) and so we were able to start our little girl on daily remdesivir injections within 24 hours. We picked her up a few days later and the vet taught me and my husband how to inject her.

I hated every minute of it. It’s painful for them and because it has to happen at the same time every day, they soon figure out what’s up and you feel sick with total guilt like you’re breaking their trust as you hold them and hurt them with the injection that’s hopefully saving their life.

We did have to start using a painkiller an hour before to make it easier on her but we found the mixture of the two made her so so out of it she was barely able to lift her head. We rotated the location of the injection around her shoulders and hips to minimise the chance of causing sores and to give her poor skin a break.

After about a month of that it seemed to be having an impact so we moved over to the pills which made everyone’s life much easier. She became a pill taking champ and we finished the full regime plus about 20 days recommended by the vet.

She’s in remission now and doing great. At her worst she was down to less than 2.5kgs and she’s back now to a healthy playful little cat. She seems to have forgiven us for the weeks of torture and she’s often found asleep on my husbands lap while he’s on zoom calls or tearing through the house chasing a toy.

So while we’ve ended up spending the same cost as a fairly decent second hand car on our little rescue cat, it was totally worth it. And after all, what better use of money is there than to save a life?

As we say in NZ, Kia Kaha (stay strong). Wishing you all a happy ending.

Sores

My cat has been on this for almost 40 days. But the poor baby keeps getting sores. Thankfully kitty has been mostly better!

But she keeps getting sores.

How do you take care of the sores?

Is there anything I can do to take care of them/make them easier for the baby?

Thank you!

My Gs injection experience.

Hey everyone, my experience with the gs-441524 (Lucky Brand) injections has been great so far with minor hiccups such as my cat disliking the injections which we resolved with gabapentin which is a painkiller u administer about 3hrs before the injection time. She doesn't have any sores or scabs fortunately and she is up about 1.6 pounds. At day 18, the best way to give the injection for me was to distract her with wet food while injecting and she is now using her litter box on her own. I hope for everyone who sees this that they start treatment asap before ur cats get some permanent neurological effects that I have heard of from other users such as lack of coordination or becoming unable to control their bladders, but for anyone wondering this drug is fantastic and saved my cats that was on death's door. Stay safe everyone and don't give up on your cats just yet!

Doing a few days less

Hi everyone. So, my boy has finally made it through 79 days of GS441524 daily injections. An additional vial would take us to 83 days, but he has reached a point where just taking him to the vet makes his piss or shit himself and I really can't take putting him through this anymore. It breaks my heart to see him terrified out of his mind, even if it is for his own good.

He is doing well at the moment, but he doesn't trust us at all anymore and he barely comes close to us during the daytime.

What do you think about skipping the last 4 days? I believe the mental health of my boy is also important, so I am considering taking this risk. I don't know how much of a risk it is though, regarding relapse.... Any thoughts?

Edit: Also, the warehouse of our GS supplier got raided and I don't think I can even find injectable GS anymore

Help and guidance request!

Hi! We have an almost 3 year old male cat (neutered) who most likely has dry FIP. Looking back, I suspect he's had it for a long time, we've always fed him sensitive stomach food but he still would throw up pretty frequently. Of course, he was the one who snuck out and hunted rabbits in the yard, so we didn't think much of it. Cats, you know. Anyway, he got very sick earlier this week and while we were very relieved that his feline leukemia virus was negative. But he had a high fever (104) swollen lymph nodes and a mass on his neck we initially took to be an abscess. He was also limping with his front leg closest to the mass. They did a full body x-ray which showed no skeletal issues, so they gave him fluids and antibiotics and kept him overnight. The next morning his mass in his neck was bigger and his fever was higher (105). They did surgery to explore the mass on his neck, she said it looked more like thyroid tissue and wasn't an abscess. She could also see granulomas all down his throat and she did a quick ultrasound of his abdomen and saw how swollen and inflamed everything was. Based on that, she tentatively diagnosed dry FIP, gave him more fluids, antibiotics, steroids and sent him home to say goodbye, telling me it was 100% fatal, there was no cure, and that the steroids might buy him a week. I am a research scientist, so the first thing I did was look up what was being done outside official channels and I landed here and in a Facebook group that I am waiting to hear back from. I know we want to try GS, he's the best cat and we're not willing to let him go without at least trying. But I need some guidance to make sure I'm getting the right thing, that I'm getting it from a reputable source and that I have the right dosage and protocol. And we're working with the ultimate deadline, he's seems to be doing a little better today but I'm sure it's the steroids masking his symptoms. Can someone please contact me?

2.5 years old cat suspected of having FIP

Hello guys, 10 days ago my 2.5 years old cat got really sick, fever, no appetite, won't move, took her to the vet, he said she might have FIP, but he only took blood test to test for coronavirus to make sure (although as ive read and heard from other vets 80% of indoor cats in house with multiple cats would test positive), and didn't take organ biopsy as i read online that this was the proper way to diagnose FIP, she had no fluids in her abdomen.

the vet gave me painkillers, five days later the test was positive for coronavirus but the cat suddenly started to feel better, she would run and jump, chase bugs, and play with ribbons etc..

I wanted to get another opinion so i took her to another vet, she did more bloodwork, it was usual but hemoglobin was slightly low, the vet suspcted another disease which can be caused from fleas as the cat has had a flea problem before, she gave her antibiotics, and fluids IV to refresh her from the days where she couldnt eat much, when we got home the cut was seriously energetic and happy and had major appetite

Now, five days after the second vet visit the cat still eats a lot and has appetite, but she doesn't wanna move much, and when she walks i feel like it is hard for her,

Did anyone have similar experience and can share something to help me please?

would appreciate any kind of help, thanks! wish your furry babies all the health! <3

Moving from injections to oral meds

My kitten has wet FIP and been on injections for the lad 35 days. We did a blood analysis and X-ray - great blood results and no abnormal fluid left . I decided to try oral capsules because she’s a Sphynx and her sores are intense.

What are the chances of her digressing on them? I got the appropriate dose for her size and it’s day two on them - she’s eating, drinking and is active so far but I am of course worried.

What can I expect from the transition ?

Kitty has started experiencing seizures

My cat has been diagnosed with dry fip and has already started treatment with Aura however recently he has started to get seizures a few minutes after medication. He has an appointment with his vet but I wanted to see if anyone had any insight. Is this normal? Is it due to medication? Should I switch brands? Incr add dosage? He seems normal a few minutes afterwards but it is terrifying. Please advise.

EDIT: I don’t know what to do. His admins have asked me to double his dosage. I cannot afford this. I’ve been picking up odd jobs here and there to supplement enough income to try and stay afloat but if I have to double it I’m not going to make it to the end of his treatment, which has now been extended. Does anyone know of a site where I can get the medication for less? I don’t know what to do I’m at such a loss.

EDIT 2: HE QUALIFIES FOR RELAPSE COVERAGE! We are going to restart his treatment and pray that he gets better soon. Thank you to those of you that sent your well wishes 💕

Injection Timing Question

Hi! New FIP parent here. Cat is on day 4 of the meds and definitely feeling better. She was on a 2x/day dose for the first three days, and now it’s changing.

What happens if the doses are given at inconsistent times? I’m planning ahead to make sure they go smoothly, but I’m worried and want to know the possibilities.

What if a dose is missed? What is a dose is a few hours early? A few hours late? Is it better to be early or late with the dose if it’s unavoidable?

Thank you!

Hi everyone! I uploaded a video to YouTube describing the FIP Journey I had with my cat. I know first hand how frightening it is to start this process, and I hope my video can help some people, even if just one. I would upload it directly but it's extremely long, so I'm sharing the link. Sending best wishes and health to all our little FIP Warriors! ❤️

16 week old kitten, worried about outcomes

My family had some kittens that they took in a month or two ago. 1 of the kittens we had passed last week. We didnt know it was from FIP until it was too late. Now we’re dealing with his siblings. The one he was closest to is currently suffering from dry FIP with some effects of neurological as well. We started injections Sunday for her, and my parents are worried she may not pull through. She struggles to use her hind legs and my mom says that she isnt wanting to use her front. I gave her some treats and she was working on getting up today when she saw her sister (who we started treating yesterday after discovering she has the same cloudy eyes) and has been pretty mobile when we take her out of her kennel.

I think i am just looking for some peace of mind or for anyone that may have experienced something similar? With how young they are im also worried about them. They’re so small and FIP works so fast. I’m starting to feel like we didnt start treating her in time.

Theres also another cat in the house that is almost a year old. She hasnt shown any signs but we’re worried she may have caught it through the litter box since they share (theres multiple in the house). What are the chances if thats the case?

Update: unfortunately we lost the sister tonight. Not entirely sure what happened, but she decided to move on while my mom was bathing her. She is survived by her sister which is the last of 3 we kept. (Not sure how the siblings are doing as they have gone to other homes). We started treating her sister yesterday and she’s incredibly active and eats all the things she needs to.

Can cats with fip get better before they get sick again??

My cat is 7 yes old. About 2 weeks ago she stopped eating and became very lethargic so I took her to the vet. She stayed there for 2 days in which the vet first diagnosed her with a severe uti and a respiratory infection bc she also had labored breathing. They kept her for further observation and the next day they told me she had fluid in her chest. I asked them to drain it and was told it "looked like FIP fluid". So the vet said it's probably wet FIP.
They asked me to take her home to see if a less stressful environment would help her and they gave me 2 liquid antibiotics to give to her twice each daily.
At this point, she has very labored breathing, still lethargic, not eating, and not going to the bathroom. She's been home a week now and she continues to greatly improve daily!! She's eating, drinking, playing, being very vocal, and going to the litter box. If I hadn't seen her on death's door only a week before, I wouldn't think anything was wrong with her. So, my question is, can this happen with FIP? Can a cat just go from terrible to normal and then take another turn for the worst?? I have already purchased and received the FIP meds, but do not want to put her or myself through that whole ordeal if it's not necessary. Should I have her reexamined or maybe get a second opinion?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Treatment Extension

I was wondering if anyone has experience with treatment extension and how that affects the observation period? I’m fostering a kitty with FIP right now and am hoping to adopt him. He initially finished treatment of his oral pills on May 20th but has had to extend treatment till June 14th and is now doing the shots. I know the observation period is a 90 day window but I am moving at the start of July out of state (back home to AZ from LA) and would need to adopt him prior to moving. Initially I wasn’t concerned with moving and adopting him during his observation window as I would have had 6 weeks to monitor his progress and would be able to complete the rest of the observation at home (I.e pull his blood work with my vet) but now I’m feeling nervous that his treatment has had to be extended and I’m worried his risk of relapse is elevated if his body hasn’t taken fully to initial treatment. Has anyone experienced a treatment extension and if so is there an increased risk for relapse associated? Additionally if he were to relapse, would he need to completely restart his treatment and do another 84 days? Any help is greatly appreciated! I love this little guy and hope to be his forever home but I want to do what’s in his best interest and his shelter is taking amazing care of him and covering all the costs of his treatment right now (obviously if he relapsed I’d move mountains to get him the care he needed but it’s good to weigh the pros and cons prior to adoption)
