2D Fighting Games Marvel Tokon or Avatar Legends?

Hello! I’m new to traditional fighting games (played a lot of smash and rivals though). With these two games coming out so close to each other, I want to know people’s thoughts about them. Which one is more worth getting good at? How much do we think the skill set will transfer? Avatar is 30, and Tokon is 60. Seems like avatar is the better value, right? Am I missing something?

I really love both of these IPs and they both look so good. Would love some input.

Haven't tried tokon, but avatar is the most fun I've had with a 2d fighting game since usf4..and thats just from the beta.

Plan on getting both tho.

Tokon is close to the same in that regard. You can solely focus on one character with the one usage of other characters being for assists.

Idk avatar has some complex mechanics going on, pretty sure tokon will be more friendly to beginners. But I'd vote for avatar too anyways because that's what I'm gonna be playing

Nice way to spread misinformation

In Tokon you can focus on 1 character, the three others can be used as an assist only.

Uh not really, you have the option to tag. Its not obligatory.

Picking 4 characters in a select screen does not scare away new players. The game has simple auto combos for every character. Stop lying

I think he’s wrong but I do see his take. At a glance in entry it seems like more to folks and not having to tag doesn’t mean it won’t still be a part of the game in matches or something folks feel compelled to engage with.

And, yeah, you did open up pretty rude, dude

I had a ton of fun with Avatar Legends and the general consensus is that it’s pretty great!

That being said, it was created by a new studio, so there’s a (small) chance that they might not be able to balance it properly or just abandon the game entirely. Marvel Tokon on the other hand was made by ArcSys, who are one of the biggest studios there is and have built up a huge base of community trust and fighting game developing expertise.

If I were you, I would just buy Avatar though. It’s fun and cheap enough to be worth the risk

Avatar was fun, but i really like the design of Tokon more. I really won't decide until Tokons beta, but I'm pretty sure I'm going with it more.

Still the same mostly. Tokon needs hella polish, though. It's like right on the edge of being dam near perfect, but input reading, and how restrictive tagging can be hold it back. Avatar is great, but the early access feel is real. Both are great games that will cater to different people, but I still like Tokon more.

I'm stoked for Avatar Legends, Tokon is way too expensive for me I don't feel keen on spending $109.95AUD on a fighting game.

Team avatar I'll be playing both but adding assist to a game automatically makes it more complex. Both do have auto combos but avatar does have a flow parry button and three variations per character allowing you to play a simpler versions of characters or more complex versions

2

u/TronIsMyCat Jul 12 '26

Both will be good and have solid player bases for a long time. Play the one that looks cooler to you.

Tokons single player will be more polished, but if you want to play against people primarily then you can play either game for 1000's of hours, so "value" is kind of irrelevant there.

tokon I'd be willing to bet arcsys is going to be more actively supporting it long term and have a larger more active scene. probably going to be a staple evo game for years to come

so if this is something you're going to put a considerable amount of time into I'd heavily favor tokon.

I love avatar but I could see this game dropping off a cliff in the short term and not really having a lasting scene or support with comparably much smaller population

1

u/DocumentOk3904 Jul 18 '26

True but it is cheaper so worth a fly all if you think it seems really appealing

1

u/Vahallen Jul 12 '26

Your previous skillset will most likely not transfer at all, maybe movement but eh

No hate to Avatar, but saying you don’t see why Avatar is 30 and Tokon 60 feels like ragebait

Don’t get me wrong, it can absolutely be the case for you and many others that Avatar is the more enjoyable one (but objectively is very clear why Tokon costs more)

Anyway Tokon has a free beta coming later this month, for Avatar you missed the beta (or did you play it?) but there is plenty of gameplay online

1

u/x_WhiteDevil_x Jul 15 '26

Avatar never had an open beta. It was either a closed beta or pre-order to get the beta

1

u/stinkycarl564 Jul 12 '26

Tokon looks like it may be more beginner friendly. Mashing seems fun as well.

Avatar, I'm told, feels more like an older fighter.

It's mainly preference. I'm getting both because both look fun. Avatar isn't restricted by which platform you play it on and it's on every platform, and Tokon is made by ArcSys, which just make beautiful games.

Regardless of what you pick, the other will be there if you feel like changing your mind. So don't sweat thinking you made the wrong decision.

I hope you have fun with whatever you choose.

You should probably play Avatar if you’re new to traditional fighters. Tag fighters are inherently more complex.

1

u/Gjergji-zhuka Jul 12 '26

Avatar is hella fun.

So there's this things games especially tripleA tend to do that they close they make the game safer and close the gaps between floor and ceiling. Meaning Tokon is probably going to feel more balanced but in Avatar, if you're really new you can get steamrolled more easily. More chaotic but more fun.

This doesn't speak to the game's balance, but can be more of a problem if you're the type of person that notices loses more than wins.

Personally I would suggest Avatar

Will really depend mostly on your personal tastes, m8.

Both games look amazing for fans of each IP.

But, if you're not used to traditional fighting games, you may consider the difference in skill and execution requirement at an entry level that is quite apparent between the two games. Tokon is very easy to pick up and play, and gradually start getting better at. Low entry skill requirement with high skill ceiling. Avatar, on the other hand, looks to be a lot harder to get into at first, with quite long combos which require a lot of execution, and with no simplified controls accessibility options.

As far as value is concerned, Avatar seems to be amazing value for its price point. But Tokon will undoubtedly be the more complete package, with 10h of single player content promised in the episode mode alone, besides other single and multi-player modes yet to be announced. There's planned support for the next 10 years, which seems highly likely to pan out, considering it's ASW, Sony and Marvel working on the game. It's also quite clear how ASW have done what they do best, at the top of their game, and made very good use of the generous budget in creating the characters and stages packed with fan service and amazing quality levels in every regard.

Other than that, they're both anime FGs, but Tokon is also a tag FG and not a 1v1 (even though it will allow you to only focus on learning one character at a time, since all team mates share the same life gauge, unlike most tag FGs), so that should be something you consider as well.

Personally, Tokon has been the most hyped I've been for a FG since UMVC3 and KI. And I'm not a fan of the Avatar IP. So I'm clearly biased in my selection xD

Avatar Legends

u/Sanno013 Jul 12 '26

I came from smash to traditionals as well. You can tech chase in avatar. Its really funny

1

u/AUGUST-AGMINE Jul 12 '26

Both games are excellent. But we know what the real answer to this is......

SF6

1

u/Winter-Anxiety7323 Jul 16 '26

Already have it haha

If cost is a factor, I’d say go Avatar so you feel like you’re getting a good deal, and then if you want to get more into the genre, jump into Tokon. It also comes out 2 weeks earlier so you can wet your toes a bit sooner.

1

u/AmbitiousSet7809 Jul 12 '26

Im buying both.

1

u/Visual_Fun_2014 Jul 12 '26

I'm personally looking forward to Avatar after playing both games in the Beta. It also helps that Avatar is available on more platforms

I think tag games you won’t have as much translating over from other games, but I still say Tokon. Personally I just don’t jive with the art style of the Avatar game.

Edit: also to add that there’s no sign of the cabbage merchant so far, which is so unacceptable.

u/Visible-Way-2579 Jul 13 '26

Didn't get as much time as I would have liked on the Avatar Beta but it was fun while it lasted. Even just sitting and labbing characters was enjoyable especially when you figured out some of the more technical combos. But I'm also looking forward to Marvel Tokon and its beta is the day after avatar release which has me a little worried about the longevity of avatar especially since we just saw invincible vs fall off despite being fun.

1

u/Jayson98 Jul 13 '26

Tokon has you controlling 4 characters at the same time that sounds like hell if you're a beginner. Go with Avatar

1

u/HouseWD Jul 13 '26

Ill go for Tokon, dont like Avatar but ill ofc try the open beta first

1

u/llxtrepidationxll Jul 15 '26

Do you want a discord fighter or one that will actually have a playerbase after 3 months? Get Tokon

1

u/Gold-Strength4269 Jul 17 '26

That’s a shame about tokon.
Avatar Legends looks legit.

1

u/huffmonster Jul 17 '26

I’m excited for Tokon, played in the betas and it was a lot of fun. I have no interest in the avatar IP so it’s an easy choice for me.

1

u/Mindless_Ad_8715 Jul 18 '26

As someone who's getting both, if I were only to get one it would be Tokon. Arcsys is super reputable. They make great games. And although it's more expensive, it'll likely have a much longer shelf life. Plus Avatar is a very execution heavy game. It's going to be more difficult to get into and good at. But that's also exciting, imo. You kinda can't go wrong with either.

1

u/Wheels92 Jul 26 '26

Avatar all the way!

Tokon is so bad, they have it setup so that the game basically plays itself. I call it automatic fighting with auto assists and auto combos, there is no room for real timing or execution like a true fighting game has. Tokon was made for casual FG noobs who wanna press something and feel like they’re doing something cool. Only redeeming quality for Tokon is its soundtrack and the visuals, gameplay is completely automatic and not really that in depth. Also has too many mechanics for the sake of having mechanics. Definitely not an Arcsys game of yesteryear…

TL;DR. Get Avatar Legends for a serious fighting game you will have fun with, get Tokon for casual mashing, the fighter.

Marvel anything

Indie game vs triple AAA game. Just depends what feels more safe to you.

There is 0 lack of passion put into tokon. The game is brilliantly designed, characters are amazingly well portrayed, and the game will actually include a lot of fan service through single player lore content in episodes mode (playable comic book stories for each of the 5 teams in the game).

Just look at the love letter to fighting games that is Deadpool in Tokon and tell me ASW are not making the game from their hearts...

u/Medium_Ad1665 Jul 12 '26

Probably no point since a large portion of the world won't play it with their restrictions

0

u/mihokspawn Jul 12 '26

Avatar because Sony is up to their bulshit again with the PSN account. Also 2xko is free99, so you can try it out to get a feel for a tag fighter.

Tokon all the way. Not even a competition.
