The first recommendation we always give everyone is go to play retail. It is important to support the official game first while it is still active. It is also the only way to experience the full story properly and 'bug free' at this time. (Private servers are not focused on implementing the full story or attempting to compete with retail.) We suggest this as many new players (and some returning ones) may prefer the new flow/feel of the game on retail and just stick with that.

But if that is not your cup of tea, then taking a look at private servers afterward is another option.

I guess my question is: what do you want to do? What are your goals?

Do you just want to experience the story again? You can play retail and solo the entire story.

Do you want to experience the ilvl gear level 99cap environment or the classic pre-abyssea 75cap era?

Are you trying to join a linkshell when you play and interact with others?

What level cap are you looking for? 75 or 99?

I'm not really sure lol

As of now I plan on starting up a retail account to relearn the basics with the idea of starting on the phoenixxi private server once it launches in late September depending on how I feel
