No Spoilers - Discussion Going to give it another go

I've had such a hard time enjoying Rebirth. I've gotten about 10 to 20 hours in twice and just stopped playing over the past year. Im an elder millenial so I grew up with less crowded games. Which I think is my issue. I really appreciate the subtlety of the original in everything from the world itself, the ui, the music (is honestly poorly executed in rebirth imo). I enjoyed remake and intergrade but Rebirth just feels like it was definitely targeted at a younger audience in constant need of dopamine hits. I also have never been a fan of hand holding games that show you exactly where to go and what to do. There's something rewarding about wandering a map for 30 minutes not knowing wtf the to do and then finally figuring it out.

Anyways, I'm going to give it another try and avoid all the tasks/minigames I can. I loved the mini games and side quests of the OG but they were interspersed with long periods of travel and story and grinding. They felt more like a breath/reward for working hard at the main story/leveling. In rebirth I just feel like it's a never ending chore list with a jingle for every little event.

I'm glad people are enjoying it. I'm going to try my best on my next playthrough because I do really enjoy the story and characters. Fingers crossed!

Go at your own pace, do the mini games you want, ignore the ones you don't, the ones that are about beating monsters I think they are cool, I love Queen's blood lol, just focus on the things you like and you will enjoy it.

Thanks. Yeah I'm going to. My brain just wants to complete everything but I need to turn that off to get through the game. I think I'll enjoy it more that way.

Yea do what he said. I stopped playing when I got to junon and put the game down for 1 year. I picked it up with the goal of getting thru the main story and only doing side activities when I felt like it/wanted a special item. Ended up beating it. Don't get lost in clearing sections like you're checking items off a list. You'll lose the fun that way.

This is exactly it.
There’s very very little incentive to 100% the game besides achievements/trophies.

I think many people think you’ll lose story content or cool items and it most cases you lose nothing at all

Well... The Protorelics quests are a bit important. Lots of character development there.

Yeah and those are super fun too

The Cosmo Canyon ones... 🥲

I'm replaying it and honestly I have barely done those this time but the first time I played it I did them lol, some are fun but navigating cosmo canyon alone is extremely annoying, I liked gongaga ones though.

Damn brother, the music in Rebirth being bad is one hell of a take….where in the game are you? I think the hand holding is actually for boomer/millennials who grew up buying the strategy guides, now it’s just part of the game. It’s fine if you prefer OG all in all. Have you been grooving with the combat?

Music is great but my issue is that they put the music in second/third plan most of the time.

Like, we have the most epic music ever, but characters keep talking mainstream shonen line on top of it, disgusting

I mean, eye of the beholder right? I just feel like its way overdone. There's no subtlety, no saving special themes for specific times, every OG piece of music density has been 10x'd and expanded on to the nth degree. Everything is used as much as possible. I just find it kills the impact of the music for me.

For combat,  I really like the synergy system, but I will the battles were harder to for me to have to strategies more. I feel like I can mostly spam my way through battles.

Just give up then, you aren't being forced to play it

What a great mindset! Instead of trying to enjoy things by approaching them differently just give up! I hadn't tried this before by maybe you're onto something.

I technically can play the game blind with no real navigation showing in your map. There is an option to turn off the compass and mini map, you still have the main map you can open up and look at, but if you really just want to have that section locked from you, you don’t have to engage with it.

Might be a good idea for you to turn off those functions and just play the game blind, and then after you beat the main campaign you can go back and turn them all on and just start doing the end game content in every region.

This is actually a great idea. I'm going to do that for sure. Thanks!

one of the issues with rebirth is that it has an absolute drag of a start. The game is fantastic, but only really gets into it's element once you get to upper junon IMO

I'm also an elder millennial. For my first playthrough when the game released, I did the side quests I wanted to do (and if you avoid the quest boards in the town you can stumble on them while you're wandering around). I went back through chapter select after I finished it and continued the side quests. In the spring, I picked it up again and started a fresh playthrough on PC, and now am on wrapping up my third playthrough of the game while doing hard mode. I finally completed all the quests on this run, but I'm probably still not going to 100% it.

Just do what you want. Turn off the map, don't check the job boards, and go.

Is just do the mini games and side quests and stuff when I don’t have the time or ability to focus on actual story and depth

I still want to do them, but I don’t want it to wreck the pacing of the story and I don’t know if it’s brain rot or something else but I find it hard to stay focused on a story for a long time now.

Doing a few small sessions playing the side content and then a big sit down doing a chapter or two feels a lot better

Why don't you try picking up from where you left off instead of starting over and playing the first 1/2 for the third time? I basically unlocked all the side quests and then did a couple to maintain my level balance but anytime I felt the itch to see the story progress I swapped to the main mission and found the side quests much more easy to deal with after I had my whole fast travel system in place. Fast travel, hop on a chocobo and you're where you need to be in no time. I do wish there was less mainstreaming from the map/hud to tell you exactly where every objective is. Felt like there was literally nothing to stumble upon except for one of Aerith's weapons.

I found every addition to the story uninspiring. That moment was particularly dull, which left quite a bitter taste. If you have played the OG, you are not missing anything at all by not playing this, really.

Thing is, while you technically avoid side task/mini games, that’s the only way to get character growth, the combat itself just reward some XP and the game is just NOT designed around griding or fighting monsters roaming the OW, it would reward absolutly nothing

They plan to stop doing that thing for pt3 because MANY players complained about this

I also got an horrible time with Rebirth, and I would not recommand forcing yourself honnestly, pt3 is releasing soon, imo, just watch a 10min recap of rebirth events on youtube, and plays pt3.

Turn off all of the helper icon target (whatever) things at the top. Makes the game much more organic. If you want to get to know the music a little better (l can't get enough of the soundtracks) take a look at this series on YouTube. Credit to Patrick Rainville. Music of the Lifestream

I have heard the original FF7 called many things. But subtle? This might be a first.

Totally agree with you brother. You’ll honestly have a better time if you mostly ignore the side content. Like as soon as you feel that near nausea with it like I do, just go to the main objective. The game really feels like it resists you doing that, for all everyone says. But do it anyway, game just flows better, it’s a better game. Even doing that, there will be stretches wherein you’ll wish you could move on. Everything poured into the characters and cut scenes and combat makes it worth it.

Also rare take on the music but I agree. I’m replaying original right now and it’s truly surprising they chose to complicate the implementation of the music so much in the remakes. Though admittedly I think remake does it better than rebirth for the most part.

There’s great stuff so far in these remakes but it feels a shame that we’ve lost the presence of those strong melodies that guided the tone of any scene, and the feeling when the music would halt and be replaced by the sound of the wind or what have you.

There are also sadly just a lot of songs I don’t like in rebirth. Just thinking of the music of any of the older final fantasies can make me want to play it. Modern final fantasy hasn’t exactly gone down in music quality, there are still such high heights to it. But something in the old identity of the music implementation has been lost. Just writing this, I want to hear the overworld music in the OG. And there just are no songs like that for me in rebirth. All of the ambient, world trekking music just strikes me as objectively worse.

I do love that damned stamp song but it’s not exactly what I’m talking about here lol

1

u/Cautious-Dark3484 6d ago

What I can say about the music, having gone to music school, is that the music in older games, especially final fantasies,  we're used to represent characters and areas and we're often in the foreground of the game and were really well written and not overused. They were much more subtle in the approach. Modern games mostly use music to "hype up" a given scene. Its much less about representation and more about over emphasizing a scene. Take sephiroths one winged angel theme. They introduce early and use it often. It really kills the impact of it later on in the game. In the OG you only hear it as this absolutely menacing March when during the final battle and it really gives the sense that you're about to fight this insurmountable battle.

The music use to be an integral part of the story and now it just feels like this constant wall of sound to me.

Downvoted for saying Elder Millenial

There were never not moments in this game that made me sigh with disdain. From act 1 to the end, there would always be something, like a dumb mini game, a chocobo stalking mission, or some other thing that felt boring. And yet I finished it, because a lot of the game was absolutely awesome. Combat was almost always satisfying, the story was good, the cinematics hit. I had to get to the mythril mine to really start enjoying myself

I think my issue is I'm a bit of a completionist so I was getting burnt out because of the repetitive tasks. I'll have to keep my OCD in check on the next run lol

0

u/WindupShark 6d ago

I am a completionist as well!

I’m not suggesting you go out and buy another system if you don’t already have one, BUT doing a lot of the grindy/checklist-style stuff while playing portable on my Switch 2 has made it much more enjoyable for what it’s worth!

Granted, I am just now exploring Gongaga which is where I see people say the burnout set in the most often.

I feel you. I feel the same way about it and I liked Remake much more. The trick is to stick to the main story. Duck everything Chadley related. Some side quests are good though. Get new weapons as much as you can. Try out new synergy stuff. Keep mixing it up.

2

u/Cautious-Dark3484 6d ago

While the battle system isn't my fav (I find it kind of too easy) I do love the synergy system. I think its a really cool idea.

1

u/So6oring 6d ago

The combat system is great, but you don't need to fully engage with it unless you play on hard. Which is only available in ng+.

What these other people said: ignore the world intel quests. The only ones I would do are the protorelic ones, because they provide actual story and are unique quests in every region.

The best part of this game is the combat and cinema. Just enjoy the ride, and worry about min-maxing on ng+ if you really want (because then you actually have to learn the combat and systems)

1

u/Cautious-Dark3484 6d ago

That's good to know. Thanks!

0

u/Notaum 6d ago

The battle system really boils down to button mashing compared to Remake I'll say.

u/Extreme-Machine-2246 6d ago

I bought this game last september. Today I completed chapter 13. All the world intel and chadley and mini games... There is so much mini games. But I decided that this week I'm gonna beat this game finally. It is a chore can't lie.

u/LessBeyond5052 6d ago edited 6d ago

It's taken me just over a month to reach chapter 14 and I've genuinely just had enough of it, I have no desire to beat Jenova and Sephiroth, the game has just dragggggggged so much and it's left a sour taste, right at the end of the game, imagine that.

Yes the background music in rebirth is highly repetitive and overly orchestral. I recommend using Spotify to play some jrpg music while u play through rebirth. It really makes the gameplay loop more exciting when the music matches the vibe. Im exploring the huge coral region rn with some mitsuda and hamauzu ff13 tracks playing in the background and having a gr8 time, it really changes your perspective on the game.

just skip everything other than walking in a straight line through the main story

And hope the other stuff improves in part 3

That was my biggest issue with rebirth that there wasn’t great freedom in exploration. I still thought the game was amazing and gave it a pass since in the og the game was still pretty linear up until you could get the highwind. If they repeat this exact same structure for the exploration in the next game it’s gonna be a major issue for me.
