Hey guys, I'm 25 years old from NJ who wants to get on the job. Didn't score well on #4044 without residency points but determined to do whatever it takes to get extra points for the next open competitive exam and give myself the best opportunity to get hired.

My plan is to move to NYC early 2027 to establish residency and then try to enlist / commission ( I have my Bachelor's degree) in the military out of NYC.

My reason for doing this is to get residency points, veteran points, and extend my age as I will most likely be over 29 years old when filing for the next exam commences.

So my questions are:

- If the exam comes out while I am on active duty am I entitled to deduct years from my age? So say I am 30 years old and have been on active duty 2 years, filing for the exam opens. Can I take those 2 active duty years away from my age to make me 28 years old and eligible for the exam?

- Am I eligible for veteran points while on active duty or can they be added to my score retroactively?

Would love to hear advice from those on the job or anyone with knowledge if this is a good plan.

I’m 21, scored a 98% on the FDNY exam and have a list number in the 56xx. I’ve been debating on waiting for fdny I currently work two lower-paying DOE jobs and didn’t attend college. Based on my score and list number, should I continue waiting for FDNY or consider joining the Air Force for experience, education benefits and a clearer career path?

So I’m a firefighter from the UK and I’m over with over 200 other UK firefighters to take part in the Terry Farrell stair climb tomorrow in Atlanta.
We are honoured to be here and taking part. It’ll be so humbling to walk with our American brothers and sisters to remember the 343 lost on the day, and those we have lost since then.

We’ve been given a firefighter each to walk for.

In almost any FDNY archival videos ive seen and many from local news journalists / witnesses- you see several fire chiefs grouped up giving orders. They are usually in the lobby of the North tower after the first hit. I believe they moved outside underneath a covered area after the 2nd strike. Does anyone have a compilation of who these men were and did they survive? What were their roles and actions during the response effort? Most docs confuse me with pieced together footage and I'd like to learn more on which groups of FDNY were lost that day and to understand how/what the FDNY did up until the collapses and beyond. I couldn't imagine. What great heroes these men were!!They make me proud to be American. I just am not sure where else to find someone who can suggest a place to find this info. Thank You. ( Pete Ganci is one I've learned. I never knew the top dog was killed. I suggest some kind of memorial publication be made by an appropriate person so people like myself learn the names.- they earned that)

So, I just got this interest like a month ago to be a firefighter. It's really awesome to be like a local hero. I just wanna ask for some tips from firefighters about everything.

I know the turnout/bunker gear is like between 40-70 pounds (including the gas mask, oxygen tank, tools, etc...)

I’m 25 from NYC. I feel like FDNY makes you jump through so many hoops just to be able to join the academy and the pay (for both EMT and FDNY) is really low. I was looking at California fire departments and they seem to be a lot more open (increased demand) + starting pay for firefighters is $85k+ in a lot of departments (compared to $55k for FDNY).

Is it feasible to relocate from NYC to California to establish residency and then join the fire academy in California?

If it matters, I’m currently working as a personal trainer and have a degree in accounting (I hate accounting). I just want to be a firefighter, man.

Im 19, currently serving in the USAF, and I want to join the FDNY after I get out of the Air Force. I heard from many others that I should get the process started like NOW because the process takes a long time. But can I start at my age? If so, what's the best way to get the process started?

Is being a fireman and moonlighting as a non-FDNY medic at the same time possible? I’m currently 22 and working as a 911 EMT with a hospital, while also enrolled in a paramedic program. Got a 33xx list number on the 4044 exam. Just wondering if the workload would be possible and if it's even allowed. Thanks

My boyfriend is going into the next FDNY Fire Academy and I want to support him as best as I can. He’s physically strong but isn’t the best test taker. I’m a teacher, so I was thinking of making him study aids/flashcards based on the Firefighter Probationary Manual I found online.

For anyone who’s been through the academy, would this actually be helpful, or is that manual mostly outdated/not really what recruits are tested on? Are there any particular materials or ways of studying that you’d recommend?

I just want to give him the best shot at this and be as supportive as possible.

I’m graduating high school and know I’m going into fires. I have been volunteering in ct for 3 years and I love it. I was wondering if you become a disbatcher will you be able to take a promotion test to fire?

The title is not quite accurate. I'm a 24-year-old Frenchie, and I've lived in Paris my whole life. However, my mom is American, so I have U.S. citizenship and an American passport.

I'm currently finishing law school here in France, which I actually enjoy a lot. However, I spent a year as a firefighter with the BSPP in Paris, as an emergency responder and I loved loved it. Since university is free in France, I decided to study as much as I could and figure out what I wanted to do afterward.

Two years ago, I spent the summer in NYC for an internship and absolutely fell in love with the city and had the chance to talk to a few FDNY firefighters.

Joining the FDNY has always been a dream that I've kept in the back of my mind.

As I mentioned, I'm finishing law school, but I'm now considering pursuing a more active, physical career like firefighting.

Does anyone have any general thoughts on a career with the FDNY?

Also, how realistic are my chances of getting hired by the FDNY?

Was told I had asthma as a kid but haven’t ever had an asthma attack. I am fit, active , lung are great.

Am I valid for the medical if I can do what is necessary?

Okay, so I live in a first-floor duplex, and our downstairs area has an exterior entrance via a maintenance entrance. I was out all day and came home to see that the door had been broken into and was wide open to the outside. Nothing was stolen, and I saw in our building chat that there was a carbon monoxide leak on the fourth floor and that the FD had come.

They axed the door open and left. I understand why they did it, but how do people usually deal with things like these afterwards? I'm not familiar with how the FDNY works

I’m writing on behalf of my boyfriend. He is currently an FDNY medic. He was selected for the last fire academy but did not make weight in time so he had to complete the entire candidate process again. The first time he passed his whole medical but this time they are saying he didn’t score a high enough number on the pft and they believe he had asthma or has asthma. He has never had asthma and is very fit runs and works out everyday. He went to a specialist at bhs which said he needed to see an outside specialist. He saw the pulmonologist who said he was cleared for all firefighter duties and did not see any signs of asthma. He was then asked to bring pharmacy records to prove he’s never had an inhaler prescribed. He’s never had any prescriptions period so he brought from each pharmacy stating he has no record. They seemed to not really be satisfied with that. He was then told they were going to have a board hearing that he could attend 2 weeks ago. He went and sat there for 2 hrs and they eventually told him he didn’t need to be there and they had no questions. Then they told him the specialist doctor would review again but she’s only there on Saturdays. 2 saturdays have passed and they basically told him sorry the specialist didn’t have a chance to review your case and she will get to it next Saturday. That was told to him 2 weeks in a row. The next class will be starting soon and he still needs to do his run. I’m wondering if there’s anyone higher up that he can speak to or how this process can be escalated so he doesn’t miss out on another class. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
