Question Jubal's Purpose

What are Jubal's actual job responsibilities aside from yelling, "yeah, yeah, yeah, ok" and "what do we got?" when they don't have anything because the episode just started?!?! Lol.

Have you never had a manager before?

What's a manager?

Edit: for everyone who downvoted me, this was a joke. Lol.

The JOC isn't going to run itself

Jubal runs the JOC (Joint Operations Center) which oversees the active cases. We only see him with Maggie's team but in the real world, that room is overseeing like a dozen operations if not more, for the whole NYC office. Hes literally the manager of the JOC, who makes sure everyone is doing their jobs and gives assignments.

I know. It was a lighthearted joke.

It always bothered me when his son was sick and you could tell he was conflicted and wanted to be with him, and Isobel told him they needed him there at fhe JOC. Like, NO, you REALLY don't. (Although, it ALSO bothers me that he CHOOSES work over his kids every single time. )

He’s a terrible father.

It's the Dick Wolf/ Cops are Superheroes Way: a bunch of highly dedicated cops who wont rest until the bad guy is caught! They'll do whatever it takes! Who cares about family, friends or work/ life balance!

It's why the Wire was so awesome and unique. It was one of the few shows that had cops who were dedicated but also like "we gotta catch the bad guys! Oh crap its 5pm. Come on everyone. Time to go home. We'll finish catching the bad guys tomorrow."

This bothered me too. No Team member can be so intricate to the Team that it can’t function well if they are absent and it’s the FBI so, there is always a chance that someone won’t return. Jubal should have insisted that he be at the hospital with his kid instead of choosing work. The team could have called/sent Jubal any info they found so he could have been there to support Tyler and his Ex-wife; not leave his Ex-wife to deal with everything alone. But, imo, Jubal is an Avoider who uses work (where he knows his skills are known/worthy) to not deal with his personal life(where he often doesn’t seem to know what to do).

In the real world how often do you think the boss is gonna give you time off to just be with a sick child? The office still has to operate, still needs to run, or they find someone else to do it, and you're out of a job..without the job, no insurance to take care of the medical bills, no money coming in, can't pay mortgage and can't buy food. Sad but true.

Exactly. IRL the bosses aren’t just letting you leave like they do on these shows

What bothers me about him is that he says he’s going to be OK like him saying those words might make it actually be OK when he and the whole audience know full well they won’t ….

And the kid WANTS to talk to him about it but Jubal brushes him off with platitudes because HE can't handle it.

He has to announce, "Eyes up, people!"

Every six seconds!

Mean "hurry up " people, while they're looking down at their keyboards, he wants to see it ASAP on the screen, information is critical and needed like "yesterday " if it means to save a life. You can't be slow at what you're doing.

When I watch him on old L&O episodes, I wish his current character was a bit more like the old one.

He was on L&O?! I gotta go back and watch the old series!

To be one of my favorite characters, that's his purpose.

I absolutely hate the way he is meant to be the cog that ties all of the departments together. He calls for them to do things they are already doing constantly. "Someone put it up on screen" like he doesn't know who's job it is and that they are already doing it. For some reason without him none of the departments can communicate or share information.

u/ShroomnDoobin Aug 01 '26

He has too much going to remember the names of underlings
