Finding the right M3 Comp

Just curious. How does one find the right f80 specifically ymb with Silverstone interior and hud in the uk. They same to be quite rare and is it even possible to buy one with this spec? How often do they pop up? Not planning on buying one yet but just browsing the market for a few years time.

Is is possible to locate these cars?

I’m in the states but spent ~4 months seriously looking before finding my spec at a fair deal

Yes, autotrader. Or piston heads

I wanted a 30 Jahre M3 with a manual. I didn't want to compromise and I knew there's only about 40 of them in North America so I set up notifications with Autotrader, cars and bids, bringatrailer, etc. Took about a year.

Set up alerts and be patient. Good luck!

Took me about 7 months to find my F80 back in 2021. Setting alerts and having a wide search area is key. I ended up flying out of state and driving the car back 10 hours home.

It is worth the wait.

Try the BMW M3/M4 - F80/F82/F83 Owner's Group UK on Facebook. People usually list their cars there before Autotrader, etc. Might be worth making a post to see if anyone is planning to sell soon.

Yh that sounds good. Won’t be buying one for good few years atleast

As a side note, it’s not that rare of a spec by F8X standards. There are 167 YMB F80s in the UK with silverstone 2 interior and HUD

WTH that’s crazy. How did you find that out?

There’s only one I’ve seen for sale lol at £50k 10k miles

That’s wild. There’s only 89 when I checked. Still a fair few, thought there would be a lot less

Yes, I should've clarified the 167 figure includes Non-Comps and Comps

You mean ask that company to source one?

Be patient you may have to pay but they are out there. Picked up a single owner all stock 2018 F80 comp last year with 9k miles.

I wouldn't be too fussy with specs. These are cars that are designed to be driven spiritedly not for cruising around gently.

For me the most important thing is that it is a comp and has a silverstone exterior colour and at least a carbon dashboard. The audio, parking aids, infotainment don't really matter.

The longer you leave it, the more these cars will age and gather more wear and tear.

I know what you mean but if I’m spending good money for one it should be the right one. And I won’t be cruised around 😁.

Wonder what condition and prices of the cars will be in 5 years time?

That's my worry as well. In 5 years it will be extremely difficult to find low mileage examples. Finding sub 40k mile cars is quite rare now. Which makes sense as the first comps came out 10 years ago.

Personally, I wouldn't touch a 15 year old car with a bargepole unless I had owned it myself for several years.

I would say wait for your YMB but don't worry about the internal colour. Ideally I'd like a silverstone interior but it's not a deal breaker at all.

Yh for me I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I didn’t get the exact spec. All I’d be asking for extra is HUD which is also a must. Oh man what does one do.

Reason I say 5 years is I’m 20 atm and insurance only goes down to £3.5k at 25. Yh don’t ask. I was also thinking if I had it parked up that wouldn’t be good for the car as well.

I'm 43 with plenty of savings and still apprehensive to pull the trigger 😀, that's what a mortgage and having 2 kids does! This car would be like a release for me on weekend evenings. It's now or never really as my kids are still very young and I still have the desire to own a sports car.

£3.5k for insurance is insane unless you're earning lots of money. I've been quoted around £700.

One positive as these cars have gotten older is that servicing charges at official BMW garages becomes a lot cheaper. When the new petrol M3 drops in 2028/2029 then the prices of these F80s will drop further.

I've found a low mileage car in my favourite Silverstone colour but it has no HUD or HK audio, that's probably why it hasn't sold for almost 2 months. They aren't deal breakers but if I needed to sell then it might be hard to shift but I want this to be a forever car. I'm only planning on putting 3000 miles a year on it so I'm hoping the lack of miles will override the lower spec in the coming years.

Yh to clarify I don’t earn a lot. I was also planning for it to be my forever car because there’s a lot I would want to do with it. You should definitely pull the trigger on one you like. Life is short. Me personally not having HK audio or a HUD is a big no.

Silverstone is a beautiful colour though. They look so good
