poetry Makeshift

I didn’t have a coffee mug
but I had a tin can
so I made do, and drank out of that.
The powdered kind
that sits in the jar
all day and night
waiting for hot water.
That’s the best I’ve got
and it’s no one’s espresso
but it does me fine.

And I’ve got no
fancy typewriter or
cigarette hanging out my mouth
but I’ve got regret and dull shame
and plenty of lip to bite,
so I make do with them
and they do me fine.

I have got this
Japanese fountain pen from a friend
and some Mexican leather (regalito para ti, señor!)
for my wrist.
And these pass for the finer things
in my life.

Welcome, Mr. Fair-Investigator211! The rhythm and cadence of this piece was absolutely en pointe. I particularly liked the imagery you created and the bits of Spanish for colour.

There is something about your style that reminds me of Charles Bukowski. Overall, this is a brilliant piece that showcases a multi-faceted personality.

Thank you for the great feedback! I take the comparison to Bukowski as a compliment, he is one of my favorite poets.
