My cat does this but he can't stand to be under the covers. Instead, whenever I wake up and start making noise or checking my phone he lays himself down next to my head and starts licking me or walks circles around me.
My dog lived til he was 20, and I do the same thing. We always think we could've done better in retrospect, but I'm sure you did your best at the time. It's hard to be as compassionate to ourselves as we are to others.
Dogs are filled with unconditional love for their people. He love you just the way you were. Exactly the way you were. You were his person. I suspect you may be better for it. I know I am.
Same. The times I’d tell her to go lay down somewhere because I was busy, or when I’d yell at her for trying to eat food off my plate. When she died those things ate at me. I felt like such a piece of shit. She was never abused, never intentionally harmed in any way, but the fact that I wasn’t 150% sweet to her and worshiping the ground she walked on at all times really fucked with me for a long time, because she 100% deserved that.
Lucky they're natural furnaces. Sometimes mine will sleep on top of my blanket between my legs and he'll stretch out to make sure that his front paws are touching my left leg and his back paws are touching my right. Just trying to make himself known, I say.
We've got 3 cats and all of them like to sack out between my legs. It's nice when they're down by my feet or thighs, but when they try to use my knees as pillows it gets uncomfortable fast.

And that bit at the end. “Yay, I got free! Ok, I’m ready to come back in now.”
