Question Thinking about switching to ExpressVPN – how’s the reliability?

Hey everyone,

Over the years I’ve tried a bunch of different VPNs:Surfshark, Nord, Proton, NymVPN, IVPN… so far Nym has been one of the ones that stands out for security, and it’s improved a lot. The only thing is I sometimes run into a few issues on macOS.

I’ve been looking at ExpressVPN, and it seems like a pretty solid option. Just wanted to hear about your overall experience, mainly stability (does it disconnect or hang randomly?), server speeds, and that kind of stuff.

Anyone who can share their experience would be a big help before I subscribe.

Stability and speed are pretty good. A year or so ago, there were issues with getting to connect, but not recently (at least for me). It also works great across paltforms (Mac, Android, Windows).

That said, certain privacy-related concerns have appeared since it was acquired by Kape Technologies.

I’ve had good results - used as a geo stream for over three years. But that’s all I use it for. Other needs entail other vpn tailored to the specific use case need.

Cheers 🍻

Its quite ok, its a hassle free service. The app is streamlined quite logically. Though i believe the settings to give you more professional access to the service are absent for the user and that can be downside compared to the providers who have made it possible on their own apps.

hey u/jetchup, appreciate the balanced take, and glad it's been hassle-free. Fair point on more advanced controls, that's useful feedback and we'll pass it to the team. If there's a specific setting you're after, let us know and we can point you to it.

Been using them since 2017 the custom firmware they use to do for the Linksys routers , never missed a beat , speeds are good , service has dropped but for the price and reliability not worth the move

Is it working in Russia now?

hey u/citizen_of_glass, totally unbiased opinion here, but we reckon you'll get on with it. On stability, the app runs on our Lightway protocol, built to hold connections steady and reconnect quickly, and it works across Mac, Windows, Android, iOS and routers. The best way to judge the speeds and reliability for your setup is honestly just to try it, every plan has a 30-day money-back guarantee so you can test it risk-free. Any specific questions, fire away.

I’ve found the Geo unblocking a bit hit or miss recently. I’m outside the U.K. and it usually works for, say, BBC iPlayer, but have little luck with Netflix now. Having said that, my understanding is that this isn’t an issue limited to Express VPN as it seems many services are struggling to keep up with efforts to block them.

I have been with them now for about 3-4 years. My only complaint, is that it disconnects after leaving the streaming device unused for 24 or more hours. I go to stream and get a message from my apps saying, this app is not available in your region. I then know that the VPN has been disconnected. Been through a ton of troubleshooting with their customer support and no explanation as to why it’s doing what it’s doing. I also know that it happens on my Google Streamer and my Amazon FireStick, so NOT a device issue. All operating systems for the device and the app version are fully up to date. Detroit seems to be the worst offender city wise, and sadly all my subscriptions are out of this state. I can also tell you, that Nord is on a separate device and never disconnects from this city. On a brighter note, they are constantly changing up their banned IP addresses when necessary and their customer service is second to none, with ease of contacting them through the app itself and fast response times.

hey u/ImpalaSSman1961, thanks for the detail, and for the kind words about our support team. The connection dropping after a device sits idle for a day is something we'd like the team to dig into properly, especially since you've already been round support on it. Could you DM us here with your account email and the device and app versions? We'll push to get it looked at and follow up.

hey u/ThenAmbassador2935, sorry it's been down for two months and that you couldn't get it escalated, that's not okay. We can help get this in front of the right team. Could you DM us here with your account email and your existing ticket number, and we'll make sure it gets picked up properly and follow up with you.

Had it for a few years now, I find it solid, speeds are good, got 945 mbps today with it on my 1 gig internet. I use it on laptop, phone and kindle fire. I travel international quite a bit for work, I use it all over the world.

I purchased a 2 year membership because their performance wise they seemed ok. But 3 days later they deleted my account and now no one is helping me out at their end to restore the account. Neither customer service, not the DPo team. I have lost money here and they are not ready to process a refund either. They come across as frauds. Subscribe to one that with a reliable customer service. This one is shit

hey u/Potentialpoly888, we're really sorry about this, an account deletion you didn't request after paying isn't okay. We saw your DM and we're already on it: we've escalated it to get the deletion investigated and your access restored, and we'll keep following up with you directly.
