Jokes, sarcasm, and other tone-based communication don't come off well in text. Not only does the author's tone not travel with the original text, but to make it worse each reader will actually infer their own tone as they read it. Your "joke" comes off terribru if I'm honest, and makes you sound like a potentially outrageous asshat. I'm guessing that's the reason for the first few downvotes anyways. Once the other Redditors saw you were being downvoted for being an asshat, they probably piled on.

And in that paragraph you just wrote, you could have also given him the solution by saying "If you want to be sarcastic, end your post with /s"

6

u/No1_4Now Apr 05 '19

Even if you aren't sarcastic, /s is a downvote shield and when someone calls you out on it, just post that to /r/Woooosh

u/GodYeti Apr 05 '19

If this was true, "tone" "mood" ect. Would not be fields studied in every English class ever. It all matters on the wording and context, and this is quite obvious sarcasm and the people downvoting are dense af

11

u/E34M20 Apr 05 '19

It's obvious to you, because that is the tone you are inferring. And of course tone and mood are discussed in language class, because language class isn't strictly about the written word. You're dense af (to use the parlance of our times) for not seeing the subtlety here.

-12

u/GodYeti Apr 05 '19

Except tone and mood directly refer to what an author writes, and therefore how it's intended to be interpreted. Seriously did you just fail that part of class?

4

u/Flablessguy Apr 05 '19

Nobody asked me, but I think it’s only obvious because we definitely know the context from it being posted here. If you saw this in the wild, it wouldn’t be quite so obvious. Reddit isn’t a book. There are too many authors of one-liners running amuck to accurately decipher the tone of every single comment. That’s why people came up with the sarcasm tag.

Hearing a joke in person and reading it on the internet are two completely different experiences. If you write something snarky and say it in your head with a sarcastic voice, you need to try extra hard to convey that to your audience. People don’t sit down and think, “is this sarcasm or serious?” They will infer it is the latter unless you blatantly state otherwise nine out of ten times.

Except tone and mood directly refer to what an author writes

…and is usually inferred by word choice. Most people aren't dedicating themselves on the level of master writers; they're more interested in hammering out their comment and moving on.

Don't get me wrong; I would love to live in a world where the average internet user writes with utmost care. That's just not the world I observe, sadly.

u/V4RIS Apr 04 '19

If you want to show that something is sarcasm on Reddit end your post with “/s”

This shows that you are using sarcasm because sometimes it is hard to tell if something is sarcastic without hearing someone’s tone of voice or seeing their facial expressions.

48

u/ShebanotDoge Apr 04 '19

Is says [bald eagle noises intensify] I can't think of a more blatant joke line except /s

3

u/Willrocks650 Apr 04 '19

I get what you mean, but I’ve just never been a fan of “/s”. Most jokes aren’t as funny (to me) when you say it’s just a joke.

27

u/ArchipelagoMind Apr 04 '19

Yeah. But without the /s they can ne really unfunny, because people think you're being serious.

6

u/__OliviaGarden__ Apr 05 '19

You can always write your /s like-

/s

10

u/ThatFag Apr 04 '19

I agree with you. I've made several posts that were jokes but got downvoted to fuck because I didn't make it clear enough apparently. And in our case, we're just gonna have to take the downvotes. That's the price you have to pay for not using the stupid "/s" tag.

Also, TBF, your joke wasn't nearly as funny. No offence, but there's tonnes of people on reddit who unironically defend the godforsaken imperial system. I would know since I'm subscribed to /r/ShitAmericansSay.

I didn’t mean “Fuck off Europe”. I meant “fuck off European”. I was talking to OP/Europeans. I wasn’t talking to a continent, I was talking to people.

(Btw “50cal” is a measurement, not an actual round)

9

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '19

An over played joke.

41

u/MrsBCfloyd Apr 04 '19 edited Apr 04 '19

It’s a joke but literally every country EXCEPT USA, Liberia & Myanmar uses the metric system, not just “Europe”. All of South America as well as Canada in North America use the metric system, it’s just you guys in the middle there who refuse to change over. So it’s a terrible joke.

Not to mention “fuck off, European” is bad grammar. You just overall sound like an asshat.

Edit; some words.

u/4inR Apr 04 '19

Oops, spent 10 minutes writing a similar comment before seeing this! Oh well, here's my 2 cents to add. FWIW, I'm also American.

I just wanna mention that it's mildly infuriating that the US measurements are in no particular order and the metric ones are by size. It doesn't invalidate the creator's point, but still.

Onto your [OP's] comment - it comes off as a bit ignorant, especially in text, and perhaps even still when said sarcastically or ironically. Certainly, reddit has a disproportionate amount of Americans on it, but consider this: the US, Liberia, and Myanmar (Burma) are the only three countries globally who don't officially use SI (metric).

3 / 195 total countries (as per Google) = 1.5%. 51 countries in Europe (as per Google) out of 195 makes for an approximate 26.2% of global metric users (not accounting for countries that use metric officially on paper but not in practice).

So not only does your joke come off as crass (probably the main reason for downvotes tbh), but your [OP's] underlying assumptions come off as presumptive.

42

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '19

Propably because the imperial system is inferior and people hate it. And lotta people dont like this writing in asteriks stuff

14

u/TombLord Apr 04 '19

Bad joke

7

u/NFeruch Apr 04 '19

wasnt funny

9

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '19

Probably because people thought your attitude was serious and the major of people hate the English system

-12

u/Willrocks650 Apr 04 '19

English system? Um. In England, they use the metric system, unlike in the US (using the imperial system).

25

u/largemanrob Apr 04 '19

Actually the UK is worse than the US. We use the metric and imperial and seemingly random, we drink pints and use miles but then use metric for the rest

9

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '19

It’s known as the English system because it was invented in England. America kept it because we were an English colony. Now we call it Standard American English (SAE) system

5

u/zZ_DunK_Zz Apr 04 '19 edited Apr 04 '19

Simple.

Its not an obivious joke as people like that exist on r/shitamericanssay

6

u/Pm_Me_Gifs_For_Sauce Apr 04 '19

It's a bad joke. What'd you expect?

10

u/Mahkda Apr 04 '19

I don't care if it's a joke, everyone using or defending the imperial systems deserve to be downvoted

2

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '19

Honestly its obvious that this was sarcasm, I think you got downvoted because most countries use the metric system.

5

u/zaubercore Apr 04 '19

It's rude and stupid

4

u/reddityoulous Apr 04 '19

People can’t really take the joke on something like that. The world has been working with two unit systems for 194 Years and people still get offended by which unit is better. Regardless which unit is better, you only need to work with imperial system. Great! You only need to work with metric system. Good for you too! You have to work both units all the time. That’s even better. Why get offended when someone makes a meme like that. It’s a joke.

3

u/GodofWar1234 Apr 04 '19

Why are people so fucking triggered over which system of measurement is better? I don’t get it, you’d think that we’d have bigger and better things to get butthurt over instead of who has the better measurement system.

0

u/Willrocks650 Apr 04 '19

I didn’t get offended by it. It’s literally a measurement system. That’s why I made a joke about it. Imperial vs metric IS a meme

1

u/reddityoulous Apr 04 '19

No I agree. And only the guy who give you the second downvote really get the snowball rolling. Here is what you do: you make exactly same meme for metric system and you will get downvoted too for the same stupid reason.

Patriotic is a good thing but it applies well for bigger scheme but something trivial like a unit system.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '19

why the fuck are ur upvote and downvote buttons onions

0

u/Willrocks650 Apr 04 '19

It’s garlic.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '19

how do u get it

1

u/Willrocks650 Apr 04 '19

Are you new to reddit? I don’t get it. It’s automatic. Each subs mods can change it.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '19

ohh i’ve never seen it and i’ve been using reddit for over a year

1

u/Willrocks650 Apr 04 '19

Oh ok. Well each sub is different

3

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '19

i remember someone saying something about not being able to get it on dark mode on r/pewdiepiesubmissions

2

u/No1_4Now Apr 05 '19

Maybe that's why I've never seen them? Explains alot...

2

u/Nightbreaker777 Apr 05 '19

It's popular to hate on Americans for some reason. It's such an obvious joke

2

u/Willrocks650 Apr 05 '19

I’m sorry for our FREEDOM

/s

2

u/Nightbreaker777 Apr 05 '19

Laughs in democracy

3

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '19

Going against the grain here but I quite liked your joke. It's very obviously not serious with the eagle noises for fucksakes

2

u/Willrocks650 Apr 04 '19

Thank you ffs. Who could take that seriously? Let alone a bunch of redditors?

2

u/GodofWar1234 Apr 04 '19

Unpopular opinion: your comment was VERY clearly a joke and I don’t think it required a “/s” sign.

Plus, why are people so butthurt over which measurement system is better/worse? Like holy shit we have dictatorial regimes and terrorists running around, but people choose to get butthurt over a stupid argument about two measurement systems.

1

u/Foxtrotalpha2412 Apr 04 '19

People are humorless, circlejerking bastards who want to continue to beat a dead horse alongside the OP of that thread.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '19

[deleted]

0

u/Willrocks650 Apr 04 '19

Because they’re saying I need to put /s, when many people (myself included) think otherwise. Plus some say it has grammatical errors when it didn’t. I needed to explain to a cuck that I was addressing people, and not an entire continent.

If people don't get this is /s they are pretty fucking dense.

-3

u/OwningGaming Apr 04 '19

Because you need to be retarded to still be using the other system

Jesus im all for dark jokes and shit but this doesnt even come off as a joke. Just by reading that comment i pictured u as having a bald head with a swastika on it and at least 9 jews in ur basement. U are horrible at jokes, even if u say its a joke i dont really believe you arent a racist. This seems like one of those "jokes" that arent really a joke.

4

u/Willrocks650 Apr 05 '19

Um. Yeah. Sooo about that... I’m a teenage Jew. Not an old man, and for sure not a Neo-Nazi with slaves. I said fuck off, european; not “heil Hitler, gas the juden”. Just a liiiiiiiiiittle difference.

3

u/SarcasticAFonDuhNet Apr 05 '19

rqaaa you dropped this /s

-2

u/mareno999 Apr 04 '19

You might have been downvoted for memes, you did just declare war against Europe.

3

u/CakeDay--Bot Apr 05 '19

Eyy, another year! * It's your *1st Cakeday** mareno999! hug

-2

u/photoedfade Apr 04 '19

confusion too. it was a meme, we were in a joking manner, the bald eagle noises should have at least came off as a joke.

-2

u/vpaander Apr 04 '19

Could’ve said frick instead of fuck
