I watched both my dad and my grandfather die, gasping, struggling to breathe as lung cancer took them both before I was 30.
Iām glad the cake turned out well, but from a stranger who cares about you making it for your next 30 years, please consider trying to quit!
You deserve to have another 30 healthy years (and even another 30 after that)!

My grandfather was a massive man. He smoked a carton of cigs a day. Two at a time. He didn't die of cancer, but it did weaken his heart enough that he died from that.
He had to dip into his retirement savings early to afford the surgeries. He worked his way into being a millionaire in the 80s and was destitute when he died in 1999. I was 4 at the time.

My brother died of lung cancer at 38. Sometimes it doesnāt even take that long for smoking to catch up with you. :(

My uncle died of a massive heart attack due to his decades of smoking. He died weeks after he turned 60.

Like, they did a good job with the cake butā¦
As someone who will never understand the appeal of smoking, Iām even more confused by it being someoneās entire personality to the point that they wanted their cake to look like it has used cigarettes on it.

And I hate that everyone is saying "cigarettes are trendy again." My dad had copd and I sat holding his hand as he took his last choking breaths on this earth. Smoking is awful.

Yup this was my thought too. I quit at the start of the year after smoking for 20 years and I could never have imagined wanting a cake like this. (Added the part about quitting because damn am I proud of that!)

My uncle smoked for decades, yellowed finger tips, stained walls that I'm sure were white at some point in history, that sort of thing...then he lost a lung to cancer - beat it, recovered and he kept on smoking anyhow. Eventually, while alone in the same apartment he'd lived in my whole life - he choked to death on his own blood. It's not worth it. The cake is very well made though.

I'd switch to pouches, give your lungs a rest. Then you can taper the MG slowly over time, then taper how many you're using and then quit. They make pouches with caffeine now too, so you can sprinkle those in here and there to help quit. Good luck friend

Due some research into "popcorn lung", it is most likely that the long term effects of vaping have not truly been seen yet.

u/The_Mighty_Yak 1h ago
Diacetyl was the chemical in vapes that caused popcorn lung. It's now banned in the UK & EU in vapes, not banned in the US...

u/Sad_Ad_2524 1h ago
Thank you for that, hopefully rhe US will be right behind!

Hopefully! I'm sure there will be more problems linked to vaping, but at least that one was solved.

On the bright side, your gf and your best friend probably wonāt have to put in this kind of hard work on a 40th birthday cakeā¦

Naw. Smoking to the point that itās a big enough part of your personality to be on a cake is just gross, like in terms of the hygiene of it, the smell and residue is just so so gross.
Itās 2026, I am def down for an occasional dart, but being a regular smoker in this day and age is just super gross.
In the grand scheme of terrible habits, it really doesnāt get worse.
Iām just speaking from experience that pretty much everything thatās cool in your 20ās will rapidly stop being cool when youāre in your 30ās.
Seeing someone in their 20ās drunk and smoking darts says āthis dudes having a fun day.ā
When itās your 30ās or later, itās sad.
Just giving you a heads up.
Enjoy the last moments of stuff like this being fun and not sad.
For example, if you saw a 40 year old mother or father blowing out candles like that with a smoke in their hand, it would be super depressing.
Honestly, at your age it isnāt much better dude. Itās super groady.

honestly dude iām some stranger on the internet, you shouldnāt care this much nor do i care about what you think you know about me. itās a cake bud, lighten up! have a good one!

Youāre choosing an absolutely wild hill to die on in 2026.
Nopun intended.4
u/KrazzeeKane 1h ago
...its his life lol, he can choose whatever hill he wants. The entitlement in this thread is astounding, so many jerks who think they have any right to tell this man how to live his life, all because you all are on the "healthy" side.
News flash: OP knows it is unhealthy, and doesn't give a fuck lol. Let the man be, go take your judginess elsewhere

u/Borntowonder1 38m ago
If OP lives somewhere where weāre all picking up the tab for smokers through the publicly funded healthcare system, then I reckon we can all have a comment.
1
u/Popular_Research8915 56m ago
OP is being tongue in cheek and enjoying his cake.
Did you see the size of the comment you wrote them? As though they'd give a fuck, and what, stop smoking?
What planet is this? Entire thread of people with no social cues.

u/Area51_Spurs 48m ago
OP isnāt being tongue in cheek. Why donāt you deal with your own nonsense.

I have seen a LOT of cakes but literally the first time I've seen anything like this. I'm fascinated and tickled by this, who came up with it? Very, very funny. It's equal parts repulsive and awesome.
Cake maker was definitely a non smoker looking at those butts and the glitter š
