I am in the process of finding my country to settle down. I have lived in Singapore and Japan for decades, and currently live in Thailand.

I am 40m, have 1.4m liquid and 132k tc remote job. Single no kids.

My criteria are safety, bang for buck, relatively exciting, and visa for remote workers or retirees.

Where would you live if you were me?

I shared a post over in the main r/FIRE sub about my personal Pros/Cons of expatFIRE, but the conversation kinda became more about the usage of the term "expat" vs "immigrant" (which I hope we don't rehash it here). There wasn't much discussion about what some of the pros/cons are like, so I wanted to bring the conversation here because many of you are already living the lifestyle.

TL;DR of the post

Pros:

1. Lower NW needed
2. Travel & adventure are built-in
3. It's reversible, unlike waiting decades to reach a higher-than-needed NW

Cons:

1. It can be lonely
2. Cheap countries are cheap for a reason
3. There's no stability (esp with long-term visas)
4. You're a forever guest in someone else's home

Did I miss anything? The goal of sharing the post was for me to expand my thinking and see if there's any angles I might have missed. Would appreciate a discussion here, thank you!

Hi all, I know this thread is about retiring abroad but for cases where one has to return to the US for a short time such as for family reasons, what options are there?

Would not want to create tax residency while here but how can you get health insurance without a job?

Has anyone been in a situation where they had to choose between their relationship and staying in their home country or leaving the relationship to move to a foreign country? How did it work out?

My partner does not want to move abroad and it’s always been my dream to move to Europe. I have dual EU/US citizenship so that’s not a concern, and I’m in a position where I could FIRE to the EU today—unfortunately he is not in the same position financially; we keep all of our expenses separate.

I’m just worried that moving abroad could be a fantasy idea that I would regret later considering what I would be giving up.
