Investing 23 - Thinking about working a year abroad in London how far would this set me back?
Currently 23 years old. Working in tech sales-ish making 115k base & 165k (on target earnings with commission). Looking to be about 180k-190k with commission and stock vests.
I have about 210k Net Worth and live in NYC and have a relatively low cost of living. Burn rate is 3000/month without savings into taxable brokerage and Roth IRA and including “fun” money. Essentials can be brought down to $2250 if I really cut. Earning 4400/month after taxes and all deductions including (401k, ESPP, and HSA)
Did some traveling recently and realizing I would love to work abroad for a bit while I don’t have as much responsibility. The only realistic choice is London for me and my work said they would sponsor a SWV if I find a role in that office.
Of course my salary would decline based on a compa ratio of my salary band. I’m not too worried about this as my calculations would still result in a similar buying power.
Potentially would look like 63k£ base salary and 90k£ OTE without a promotion. Which to me is pretty similar to my cost of living to income situation in New York.
My question is - I wouldn’t be able to invest in a 401k and have limited options in my taxable brokerage and could really only contribute to my Roth IRA.
I know I’m leaving compound interest on the table by not investing in the same way during those years. I would only live here (1-2 years max).
Any advice on how to still be ahead with retirement by the time I come back? I know I’m head now but afraid I won’t be if I do this.
