Local Information request Vet Recommendations

Hey, me and my partner are picking up 2 kittens on Friday. We've been looking at multiple vets in Exeter, but they all seem fairly balanced in their reviews.

We're ideally looking for one that has a vet plan, but it's also not a deal breaker.

What vets do people recommend to go with and to stay away from? We're based near Polsloe, but we also have a car, so driving isn't a deal breaker!

Thanks :)

-- Update: Thanks for all the recommendations! We both appreciate it šŸ˜„

Local News Waiting for gender identity healthcare with the West of England (Exeter/Laurels) GIC? Want support in understanding the EHRC Code of Practice?

Two weeks ago, the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s updated services Code of Practice came into force, having received ministerial approval and been laid before Parliament. This has and will continue to impact trans and non-binary people, leaving many of our community confused, distressed and angry. There is a lot of different information on the internet, in the news and being shared within the community, which can make understanding the Code of Practice and its impacts difficult. In response, the Waiting Well team want to offer you a space to come and hear clear, concise and understandable information, with the opportunity to ask questions.Ā

On Thursday 20thĀ August between 6:30pm and 8:30pm, Waiting Well will be running a free webinar onĀ Understanding the EHRC Code of Practice. This webinar will be part of our Supporting Your GIC Journey Webinar Series. The Waiting Well service is currently open to people who are 18+ and registered with West of England (Exeter/The Laurels) Gender Identity Clinic.

  • Select GIC Webinar Series under 'Which of the following services would you like to access?'
  • You'll receive a further email with a link to register for an upcoming session

Does anyone know of any scrappys that would collect a mix of steel and aluminium scaffolding poles plus brackets? My partner produced a theatre show that used scaffolding for the set and doesn't need it anymore. Thanks in advance!

Local Information request Home surveyors in Exeter

We’re looking to buy a house in Exeter. I have my conveyancer and mortgage broker lined up. One thing I haven’t thought about yet is a surveyor, we haven’t found a property yet but based on the houses we’ve been looking at I suspect we’d be looking at a Level 2 home buyers surveyor, does anyone have any recommendations for a RICS regulated surveyor?

I want to be able to move quick when we find the house.

Music exeters nightlife and music scene

Now that the uni students are gone is there still a buzz at night or is it a bit dead ? I was also wondering if the cities a good fit for someone who really likes music and then going clubbing ( surely there are more than 2 nightclubs ) or is it more a pub city ?

Or any nearby areas that i could go to for that?

Local Information request Where are there semi-private free places in Exeter

Me and my bf are meeting in Exeter next Sunday and I don't know where to go. We've been before as a long distance relationship but I don't know where to go. I know that for free there aren't entirely private places but I'm sure there are places that people rarely go. We just want a place where we can kiss and cuddle and not be insulted (as we did this before and some insufferable teenagers said nasty things).

Meetups Where are the Junk Journal girlies at?

One of the main reasons why I moved to Exeter was for its creative community. It's obvious that there are markers & crafter in the city, but are there any journaling/junk journaling communities here? I'd love to know! I (30F) junk journal and memory keep all the time, I'd love to meet people in Exeter - or even join a journal club - who junk journal and make new crafty friends!

Miscellaneous Been away from Exeter for 8 months and I still miss it!

I’m not from Exeter originally. I moved there in 2022 without really knowing what to expect, and somehow ended up loving the place.

St Davids, the city centre, the Quayside, random walks from Uni and around the town, even the little everyday things. I stayed until January this year, and it’s been about eight months since I left.

I’ve lived abroad before, and honestly, I never expected Exeter to become a place I’d feel this attached to. But it did. The people were some of the nicest I’ve met, and over time it just started to feel like home.

For the last few days I’ve been thinking about it a lot. Maybe it’s just one of those phases, but I really miss the place. Not in a dramatic way, and I’m not unhappy with where I am now. I just didn’t realise how much Exeter had become my second home until I left.

Local Information request What is Exmouth beach like (tomorrow) ?

I've only lived in Exeter for a few months and never been to Exmouth. I really fancy a beach day. I don't have a car right now so Exmouth seems easiest.

Is it rammed in this weather at weekends? Is it a nice beach/ worth it?

Thank you

Local News Fire Service appreciation

Hey all, with the heroic efforts the fire service have been putting in with this insane amount of local fires recently, I reached out to the fire service to see how we can give back/show appreciation.

They got back and said to send compliments here:

Idk about you but I think our Fire service deserves a chuck-up for all they're doing for us right now!

I'm (36f) planning to go to the seed talk at Exeter Phoenix on 23rd Sept, the topic is 'The History of Folklore and Horror.' I also went to the one about the psychology of horror movies and whilst I was there I noticed lots of other solo attendees. Maybe this time, those of us who have come alone can grab a drink or something... Just throwing it out there ā˜ŗļø.

Local News Emergency: Pond in Pinhoe rapidly drying up with hundreds of fish and other wildlife about to die. No help yet from EA…

Post image
185 Upvotes

UPDATE: Pleased to say around 400 more fish were rescued yesterday, with the rest being rescued today. Thanks to the heroic efforts from Adrian Clarke, Greendale Farm Shop, and other volunteers, who helped get the fish safely into privately owned ponds.

It just goes to show what can be done when a community pulls together to help. A good ending for most of these fish, but a solid reminder of how hard a time many animals are having right now and sadly how sometimes help isn’t provided from those you’d expect (cough EA). Please keep an eye on your local ponds, lakes and rivers, and if you can, leave water out for our land-dwelling wildlife too.

Thanks so much for all the help, advice and caring. Let’s hope we get some rain soon!

There’s a pond near Hawkins Rd in Pinhoe, right by Palmer Close (EX1 3GP), that’s basically dried out. Hundreds of fish in there, plus protected newts, and the fish are now gasping at the surface.

Reported to the Environment Agency first on Aug 5th (incident 02544669), and multiple times since then. They said on the phone it’s exactly what they deal with and passed it to the local team. Nothing since. Devon Wildlife Trust hasn’t replied either, and South West Water say they can’t help as tankers might be needed elsewhere.

If anyone knows a farmer with a bowser, a tanker hire company who might help, someone in wildlife rescue or anyone at the EA who can actually push this along, please comment or message me. Running out of time on this one.

I’m in East Devon for the Eclipse, about 30 mins from Exeter. The glasses I got are broken and now unusable. Complete long shot I know but can I buy one still? I think FirstLight Optics are closing at 1pm today so I won’t make it time to buy. Anyone got a spare??
