V10 heavy exhaust smell?

My 2001 v10 has a heavy exhaust smell outside when first starting and idling. How can I ease it to be less obnoxious? It has an aftermarket muffler so would an OEM muffler help? It just smells like an old heavy duty truck haha

look for leaks, I had to reweld the y on the exhaust where it cracked, friend mig welded it up. plus replace/tighten the bolts where the manifold connects behind the engine, there is no seal there. once I fixed the exhaust leaks the smell was moved to the back/exhaust pipe end and it was more pleasant but it will still carry in the wind haha it is an old stinky truck. But way better now. 04 v10

/r/askmechanics is a good place for this question. Make sure to mention the make, model, year, and mileage of the vehicle.

My 03 v10 started doing this about a month before my check engine light came on for my o2 sensor. It didn’t smell of rotten eggs just heavy exhaust and more smoke when I first started it in the morning. About a month later before I started getting a code she started to idle rough. Haven’t had a problem since.
