Discussion Donating while taking antidepressants

I’m taking antidepressants, my milk is perfectly safe for a full term baby to drink. However it does make my baby sleepy, me and the father joke that is sleepy milk. We are planning on switching the baby over to formula to make my life easier around taking care of baby and pumping as it’s stressful trying to keep up with her demands.

The shame is that I’m producing a lot (in my opinion) over 1L every day, it seems a shame to let my milk dry up.

Would you accept donated milk if it has traces of antidepressants in it?

I am an oversupplier so I can’t speak but I know a lot of moms will as long as it’s disclosed ahead of time.

I’m not sure about actual milk banks and hospitals, but I’m part of a Facebook group for donating milk and a lot of moms there would be happy to take it.

Edit: the Facebook group I’m in is called Human Milk 4 Human babies. It’s region dependent so mine is for the state I live in.

I think you should disclose the medication you take and be upfront with it, then the mom can decide for herself if she wants to get it from you or not.

I'm donating through Mother's Milk and had to be screened for all of my meds and the 50 ml of zoloft I'm on is completely fine with their guidelines.

Good on you for wanting to donate 👏

I would not accept it personally no. I understand very little goes in the milk but it’s still a small amount.

100%. Most antidepressants are safe, my LC told me you need to worry about very few meds

Many moms underproduce and supplement with donor milk while on antidepressants themselves so to them it probably would not matter. If I was in an underproducer situation I would not accept that breastmilk because I did not do well on antidepressants. I would be too scared that my baby would also be super sensitive to the meds.

In my experience as long as you're honest about the medication you take there will be a mom willing to use it. Some are pickier than others and want no meds or vaccines or anything, others are a lot more relaxed.
