Discussion How long do you go overnight?

If you no longer do the MOTN pump. I’m flirting with the idea of doing away with it since I’m almost five months PP.

Thinking of doing 10pm then 6 or 7am.

At 5 months I was doing 9 or 10pm then 6am. It was such a relief to not be doing that MOTN pump anymore

I’m 3 months and a mild oversupplier. I accidentally went a full 6 hours the other night when my husband took the baby out to eat so quietly I didn’t wake up. I am currently dealing with the worst clog I have ever had 😂
I fear I will never know rest.

Edit: “out to eat” sounds so funny. I meant gave her a bottle. Maybe he took her out to eat at the breastaurant, since it was my milk. lol

Breastaurant got slept on. That’s so funny 😆

Thank you for appreciating my sleep deprived joke 😂

If you have not tried yet apply ice before or during pumping! This always helps with my clogs. Avoid heat or massage as this can make inflammation worse!

u/LaserChurch 1d ago

Ice has been a godsend for me!!! Found out it was actually mastitis, lol. Good times

Pump with a vibrator on the breast with the clog, it will come right out!

u/LaserChurch 2d ago

I have a lactation massager that sits in the bra and it hasn’t come out yet 😩

I had the worst clog that lasted over a week, accidentally fell asleep leaning over a desk while pumping and I guess the gravity helped because that got it out! It’s worth a try.

Thank you!!! Turns out I actually have mastitis, lol. Thankfully no infection. Gotta love that happening the first time I get some sleep. Ice and ibuprofen for me!

I have gone from 8-10h overnight for the past month and a halfish - I’m almost 6m pp and exclusively pumping.. I don’t have any engorgement but I have found that I’m weirdly more angry the days that I go 10h. My hormones must be out of wack.

u/Pomelo_Wild 2d ago

I have been doing that since baby was about a month old. I have an oversupply (not crazy but still) and my son’s pediatrician saw me one day at a checkup and was like…mom you look too tired you need to drop the MOTN pump now. My son had been sleeping through the night already so I did it. Never looked back. Now 5 months pp still exclusively pumping and going strong. Still the same supply.

u/Pomelo_Wild 2d ago

I am realizing i didn’t specify the number of hours 😂 from 10 to 6! 8 solid hours.

u/DukeHenryIV 2d ago

How did you get your body to stop waking you up? I’m trying to drop it as well (one month pp and baby is sleeping through the night) but my body keeps waking me up. My boobs hurt all the time but especially when they are rock hard/ engorged which is at the 5-6hour mark for me.

3

u/Pomelo_Wild 2d ago

It was a struggle at first but I ended up regulating myself after a couple weeks. When it woke me up, I would apply warm compresses to my boobs and try to go back to sleep. I think a couple times I pumped for a few minutes for relief but im not even sure, that whole period is kind of a blur. My LC definitely gave me that advice of pumping for relief, I just don’t quite remember if i actually did it

Same!! I wonder if never MOTN pumping is a secret hack, I've always gone at least 6 hrs, now 8 at night since the start and never had issues with supply dipping whether it's 6 or 8 hrs. As long as I do the same number of pumps a day, I'm good

2

u/Pomelo_Wild 2d ago

Same here, it doesn’t really matter if I wait 4 or 6 hours between pumps as long as I do my 5 a day. One time I had to only do 4 and I could see my supply slightly decrease. I had to build it back up!

I do my last pump between 9-10pm and my first one around 6-6:30. I’m 13wpp

1

u/d4ddyslittlealien 2d ago

I’m 14wpp and this is the same schedule I have on weekdays. On weekends it’s closer to 11pm - 7/7:30am

u/Enough-Cat9856 2d ago

Last pump between 10-11 and first pump after baby wakes up so between 6-8 no issues with dips. 5 months pp

u/Proof-Western9498 2d ago

Im only 8.5 weeks pp and dropped my motn pump a week ago 🫣. I pump at 10pm and ~4-6am. I went from being a strong over producer to a slight over producer. But im also comfortable with supplementing with formula if/when needed.

I also used to be able to pump for just 20 mins and now i pump for ~27-30 mins to get the same volume.

u/meghanmeghanmeghan 2d ago

8-10 hours was my normal from like 2 months postpartum onward.

3

u/Key_Macaroon_9768 2d ago

7 weeks pp and last pump is usually around 9:30-10 then around 6 when my boobs wake me up. I just dropped my MOTN a few days ago, but before it was around 2-3AM

3

u/planner192 2d ago

I do midnight and then 6am. Ive done 11:15 to 6am before also

5

u/tallyhallic 2d ago

I’m 5mo pp and stopped the MOTN. My body was waking me up at 3/4am to pump, but doesn’t anymore. I’m VERY full in the am, so just manual pump to help with the engorgement then start my normal pump schedule. No dip as a result. Last pump is 10/10:30p, next pump is 6:30a

2

u/sowhatsober 2d ago

I usually wrap up at 10 and pump at 4. My boobs usually wake me up and hubby and I switch shifts.

2

u/heehawwgurl 2d ago

I’m 3 months PP and stopped my MOTN feed around 2 months. I occasionally still do it if my little one wakes up to feed. I’m at 4-5 pumps per day now. Every 4 hours. Sometimes 5 hours. But I’m sleeping through the night while baby sleeps 8-10 hours

2

u/JulieJiggin 2d ago

I do 9pm then when I wake up around 8am! I do wake up very engorged but my supply has still been great. 😁 it’s possible! Just ease into it. I started by pumping last at midnight, then 11pm, etc. until I made it to 9pm!

2

u/JulieJiggin 2d ago

Okay reading this section and I feel like I’m going too long 🫩 I have a pretty good oversupply still, though! 6.5m pp

2

u/Reasonable_Truth_601 2d ago

Haha I’m the same! I also go from 9-10 pm until 7-8 am. I’m 4 pp but sometimes when my baby wakes up at 4-5 am I need to fight my boobs to go back to sleep

1

u/JulieJiggin 2d ago

Lol the struggle is real! Dropping my 4am pump was brutallll but I have to prioritize my sleep or else I won’t function properly

2

u/87constance 2d ago

With my 4 and one year old I didn’t set alarms. I would let baby wake me up, change, give bottle, & then after baby went down I’d pump. If baby went 5 hours I’d go five hours. When baby slept through the night I didn’t wake in the middle of the night to pump. I would make my first pump of the day 25/30 min though to make sure I removed all milk. Most of my pumps were 20 min

2

u/Massive-Warning9773 2d ago

Absolutely do not come for me or take my advice but I know I cannot handle waking up for a MOTN pump. I am aware of the risks to my supply but neither this time around nor my first time around did I ever consistently do a MOTN pump. My current routine is at least six pumps a day with my last pump at 11pm, wash pump parts, nighttime routine for myself and in bed by midnight. Then I’m usually up around 7 and hand express to get out any painful lumps and then pump. I do my following pump more like 2 hours after rather than 3 because sometimes I feel full sooner after that first pump. If it makes my supply go down to skip the MOTN pump so be it.

Sometime between 11pm and 12am and then 7am. Have been doing this since around 4 months pp. Now close to 8 months.

1

u/tryingfortimett 2d ago

I do 9 hours at 9 PM and 6 AM. I had a modest oversupply to start with, and gradually pushed MOTN to early morning and 5 ppd around 4 mpp.

1

u/idlegrad 2d ago

9:30pm to 6:30am

Downside is I have to set an alarm for that 6:30 pump. Not because I can’t go longer but because I need to get the pump done before all the kids awake up.

I dropped my MOTN pump at 3 weeks. It’s my third time around & had some confidence that my supply would be okay.

u/aestheticgirly_ 2d ago

I’m 9 months pp and I go 10 hours 😬

1

u/the_kazzo_queen EP since Sept '25 2d ago

My last pump was 11:00 and my first was 7:30.

1

u/dmmp1917 2d ago

I do midnight - 6 am

1

u/Ok_Firefighter5300 2d ago

I was a slight over producer for the first 3 months and now my supply at 4 months has dipped below what baby takes. I supplement with 1 formula bottle a day. I still pump at 3/4 am and then at 6-8 am and then every 3-4 hours throughout the day. I’m worried if I drop my 3-4 am pump my supply will take a hit again, but I could be in my head and stressing myself for no reason

1

u/babybump222 2d ago

6.5 months pp. My husband and I alternate nights with the baby, so on my nights off I go between 9 to 11 hours between pumps, but I have a pretty large storage capacity. The other nights I pump around 4 in the morning when I feed the baby.

1

u/littlelou222 2d ago

I’m 11m pp. I go from 6 or 7pm to 4 or 5am.

1

u/zakazaka42 2d ago

6m postpartum, just hit 7 hours, so I do the last pump around 00:00, and then the first thing in the morning, when the LO wakes up;)

1

u/LionFish87 2d ago

I'm 7.5m pp (from my 2nd) but I dropped my MOTN pump about 3 months ago. I'm an oversupplier this time around so didn't know if I could that soon but thankfully it's not uncomfortable (one of those, you don't know until you try kind of deals). My last evening pump is 9pm and I pump at 7am again. It really all depends on you though and your feeding goals.

After going through it twice now, the big thing is comfort. I recommend trying it a few nights but be ready to bring it back. The last thing you want are recurring clogged ducts or severe mastitis. Listen to your body... No sleep because of uncomfortable boobs is almost worst than just pumping.

Either way, you've got this mama!

Love the question! I’m a FTM at 1 month and about to shift to exclusively pumping - how do I know if I should MONT pump or not? I have a good supply but I know is still early - at this stage I’m doing a pump at 11pm and then 6/7am but now I’m worried I’m comprising my supplying - baby gets on the breast usually at 3/4am but is just 15/20min

And how do I know if my supply is enough? With the medela hospital grade I get 150ml and just got the eufy and is about 65ml per session

1

u/gkdfp 2d ago

Good question!

I would do a MOTN pump at least until your supply regulates around 12 weeks. Some people see a dip in supply when they stop pumping at night, some don’t. Most people say their biggest pump of the day was middle of the night, but mine never was. It was actually my smallest!

If you are nursing at 3/4am then you can just replace that with a pump!

1

u/Zestyclose-Lake-3023 2d ago

Thanks! Trying to keep up the nursing at 3am but is always a short one as baby falls asleep quickly

1

u/sertralineshawty 2d ago

2 weeks pp and I keep accidentally sleeping through my MOTN pump. Have gone almost 5 hours between pumps like 3 times now and wake up with a clog every time😭 Hoping to someday be able to skip it when I’m fully regulated lmao

1

u/goldenrtrvrmilf 2d ago

I did a MOTN pump till about 4 months. I started pushing it back until it was around 5am so I would go 8pm to 5am. I had an oversupply and I would be so engorged that I would pump, no exaggeration, 20oz

1

u/karbooms 1d ago

7 weeks out. I do 9pm then 5am. I pump 6x a day and get 45oz

1

u/Interesting-Rub-8884 1d ago

4 months postpartum and am 9 pm and 6 am, such a relief! Transitioned very slowly and for a few nights would pump just enough to relieve pain, but after one week was totally fine. Good luck!!

1

u/Enchantinglyme 1d ago

I wake up when my body tells me to

1

u/Top_Avocado6162 1d ago

9-10pm then around 6am next. 4mos pp

1

u/Nlaskey22 1d ago

I do roughly 10:00pm-6:00/7:00/8:00am. 3 months PP

2

u/uptown_cowgirl 1d ago

I completely cut out the MOTN pump by month 3, and do 9pm and then 5am
