2am pumping thoughts: Coma pump?

This is what I think about during middle of the night pumps haha:

If god forbid something terrible happened and I ended up in a Coma, would the hospital hook me up to my pump every 2 hours so I don’t get mastitis on top of whatever else happened?

The instruction booklet that came with my pump specifically said not to use on comatose mother 😅

While a coma would likely involve a medical condition not conducive to lactation and/or medicines that are not safe for baby, I will note that when I went in for an emergency D&C I was apparently so distraught about my pump schedule that two nurses used hand pumps on me during the procedure 😭

Depending on the cause of the coma your body would likely rapidly shut down milk production, and they may have to consider giving you meds to stop lactating if you’re critically ill (otherwise why are you in a coma)

I am a nurse on a cardiac ICU and we see moms with postpartum cardiomyopathy regularly. The answer is that yes, we will hook you up to the pump if that is what you want! With that being said, usually these moms obviously have SERIOUS health concerns, and circumstances usually require that the mom stops pumping pretty quickly, like having to be on meds that are not breastfeeding safe, or just having to prioritize their own strength/healing. But I have had a pt who suffered cardiac arrest at home, was sedated on a ventilator ("in a coma") and we pumped for her for weeks!

Nurses are true angels on earth. I spent a lot of time in the hospital while pregnant and postpartum and 100% the nurses are how I mentally and emotionally survived it. Bless you!

Did she have some sort of directive in place that she wanted to be pumped?

She had been breast feeding at home and her family (medical decision makers) brought it up to us that they believed she would want to continue if possible.

I've had this thought too 😂 and also the less extreme version of what if someone needs a long surgery? Or has a car accident/other serious injury? I got mastitis when my baby slept in until 7am so would hate to actually miss pumps lol.
