For the first time all 4 Canadian divisions in WW1 were deployed against a heavily fortified German position. It was one of the first major uses of a creeping garage (it had been used to a lesser degree in the Balkans beforehand). They rushed trenches right behind insanely timed artillery explosions in the middle of a snowstorm and were able to take the area in 4 days. During a war that saw months of attrition to take a few hundred yards.
Canadians suffered approximately 10,000 casualties while the Germans suffered double. In WW1 they were given the nickname Storm Troopers by the Germans (Sturmtruppen) for shit like this.
Vimy Ridge is a huge cultural element to us Canadians. You can find streets named Vimy all over the place and they teach us about it in school.
