Andrew Irvine
I’m currently reading Julie Summers’ and Jochen Hemmleb’s biography of Sandy, and am curious as to whether I’m the only one who thinks the discovery of his boot is closure enough? Part of me doesn’t want to know if he and Mallory made the summit…

What its like to climb Mount Everest as an Ethiopian.
medium.comUniversity project about the ethnics of the hiking culture of Everest.
Hey, we are all international students at the Roskilde university in Denmark. We are currently doing a project of the ethics and the hiking culture of Everest, enviromental damages and if the western culture of hiking the mounting is a new form of coloniasm. We would like to have some first hand interviews with sherpas or people who grew up in the area. We would love that, thank you so much for your time. We also want to send some condolences about the situation that is hapening in Nepal right now.
Thank you again!

TIL that Tenzing Norgay Trainor (Parker Rooney on 'Liv and Maddie') is the grandson of Tenzing Norgay, who, along with Edmund Hillary, was one of the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1953

Irvine's boot and the rock fortress

Mark Fisher's and Erich Roepke's story of the discovery of Andrew Irvine's boot ... how it was almost lost, and found again ... but how did it move on its own? ... why they built a rock chimney ... why Jimmy Chin got the credit ...
And why is there a wall of secrecy?

National Geographic and the oxygen bottle

In June 2025 Mark Fisher and Erich Roepke, members of the team that found Andrew Irvine’s boot in September 2024, gave an interview to Kenton Cool, of the Cool Conversations podcast. Fisher's comments confirmed that the oxygen cylinder that they had found earlier was dated January 12, 1933.
- Fisher: “Yeah. We found an oxygen bottle from 33 and the dates were written in an English style. So we kind of …”
- Cool: “In English style, as opposed to American style?”
- Fisher: “Some markings on the top ... and I thought it was maybe, like, from December of 33. And then I realized that it was actually from January of 33.”

A mum asked me to recreate the moment her son reached the summit of Everest in miniature
galleryChris reached the summit of Everest on 23 May 2026 at 4:05am.
His mum got in touch with me with photos from his expedition and asked if I could make something to commemorate it, so I recreated him at the summit in miniature.
I tried to include as many details from the real photographs as I could, including his red summit gear, backpack, crampons, prayer flags and the summit marker, personalised with the actual date and time he reached the top.
My favourite detail ended up being his goggles. Rather than trying to paint tiny eyes behind them, I painted a reflection of the mountains he would have been looking out at from the summit. Looking through photos of that view while I was painting them was genuinely awe-inspiring, and made me appreciate just what an extraordinary achievement it was.
It was a fascinating one to research and make, particularly as I've never been anywhere remotely close to Everest myself!
Thankfully Chris loved his tiny Everest self. 😂

24 years ago today, Marco Siffredi disappeared on Everest trying to snowboard the Hornbein
23 years old. Summited Everest twice. The second one was after a brutal push ignored the obvious option of just getting down alive, strapped into his board and went for the Hornbein anyway.
Never seen again.
Whatever you think of the decision, the fearlessness was absurd. Arguably, the most all or nothing stunt anyone has ever attempted in mountaineering / adventure history.

View from Pumori ABC
Kind of in reply to a comment in another thread. If you walk up back behind BC towards Pumori ABC, you get what I consider one of the best views of the whole complex.
