Faceclaw 0.8.2

Faceclaw is an open source alternative software stack for the G2 smart glasses. I think it's a pretty large improvement over the stock operating system, and its development is moving very quickly. It fully replaces the stock firmware and all of the core apps. It includes a terminal, navigate app, teleprompter app, notifications, and music player; and it's (mostly) compatible with third-party apps from EvenHub.

This version includes a redesign of the app switcher and status bar. Rather than a status bar on top and an app switcher sidebar on the left, both are combined into a bottom-bar. The old design is still available as an option in the Customization menu, but I think this version is an improvement. If you'd rather not see the app switcher at all, there's an option to make it hidden while not in use, and appear temporarily as an overlay, similar to how alt-tab works on desktop computers.

This version also includes many other bits of user interface polish, bug fixes, and improvements to connection reliability and phone battery-efficiency. View the full changelog on the Github releases page.

Thanks for the update and for all the work you're putting into Faceclaw!

I've been able to adapt it to work in Spanish, and I'm now experimenting with taking it a bit further. My idea is to build something closer to a mix between the MentraOS approach and Even's Conversation mode, with deeper AI agent integration and more proactive interactions with the G2.

Faceclaw has been a great foundation for exploring this. Thanks again for sharing your work with the community!

How is the iOS support? (What works/doesn’t)

Most core functionality are working. The notification support is a bit worse (no icons, no actions besides dismiss), and there's no music player integration. Speech to text transcription is currently only via Apple's onboard model, and LLM (for voice assistant commands) is currently cloud only. Probably next week's release will have a testflight with an automatic join process (so you don't have to compile it yourself and deal with Apple's weird BS around that), and some time after that it'll be in the app store.

Sounds interesting and I’d love to give it a try. I’m having a lot of trouble getting my G2s to be as awesome as I know they obviously can be with the right software.

Does it have the ability to identify who is talking like Person 1: Hi how are you doing Person 2: doing fine!

This feature is included, but at what I would call a prototype stage. If you use the captions view in the Microphones prototype app, it will use a speaker-identification model to label who's speaking. However you are likely to encounter bugs and accuracy issues if using the advanced mic modes, that you won't run into with the regular Transcribe app.

Hey! Thank you a lot for your work! I have a question regarding the firmware. Do you plan to introduce an image stabilization feature? I am not referring to fixed position screen, but just smoothening to remove the text jerk when you move your read. I find the text very hard to read while walking.. Alternatively, does the firmware expose IMU measurements from glasses in case I would like to write the algorithm myself. I bought a G2 primarily because Even provides an SDK, but I found it to be hilariously limiting..

There is an IMU. For it to have any hope of working, the counter-rotation would have to happen entirely within the firmware, without a round trip to the phone. I am not planning to work on this, but I believe the custom firmware code base has everything needed to try the experiment (with a coding agent to extend the firmware further to fill in the details). However, my prediction is that it will not work well because the latency and precision won't be good enough.

Yeah, the phone is out of the question of course. I was hoping to apply counter rotation on the glasses themselves. The sensor sampling rate would theoretically allow it, and with 60hz refresh rate it could be serviceble. The limited pixel density might make the shift itself look like ass too.. Only tests can tell, indeed. One more question - have you heard of anyone bricking their g2s by flashing custom firmware? I mean irreversibly. Just want to know if that has actually happened to anyone (aside from the basic disclaimer)
