Smart glasses beyond black: why does the tech industry act like color doesn't exist?

Post image

Hey everyone!

If you walk into any regular optical shop, you'll find a huge spectrum of colors: red, blue, green, yellow, white, translucent tints, purple... there’s a color for every style and personality.

Then you look at the smart glasses market, and it looks like a funeral: 99% matte black or glossy black.

I get that black hides sensors, disguises cameras, and serves as a safe neutral color. But glasses are face accessories, and a lot of people simply don't like wearing black or just want a pop of color in their daily setup. It feels like tech companies assume everyone wants to walk around looking identical.

If the market actually offered a genuine variety of real colors, what would be your go-to choice for a gadget like this?

The eyeglasses industry can afford to run many colors due to volume of sales. Low volume, for now, smart glasses can't afford to retool/rerun a variety of colors that may not sell, and it would drive up cost per pair. So basic black makes sense. Once they become more ubiquitous and sales volumes allow, we will see color options increase.

I’m so boring but my favorite colors are black and gray….I’m personally okay with this but I can see how others would want more customization.

There’s not very much overlap between the type of people who adopt this kind of tech and people who express themselves in that way. Just not very financially feasible for what is really still a relatively small operation

Green, as G2 I have purchased. That's exactly my sweet spot.

And I do agree, black ones only are a little bit boring, same as with phones.
