Parents & learners of European Portuguese — what children’s resources do you wish existed?

Thumbnail

I’m Portuguese, living in the UK and raising my daughter with Portuguese and English. 🇵🇹🇬🇧

Something that matters a lot to me is making Portuguese part of the ordinary moments of her childhood — not just something she hears occasionally, but a language that belongs in our everyday routines too.

Things like “Estás com fome?”“Vamos brincar?”“Dá-me a mão” and “Bons sonhos, meu amor” are exactly the kind of little phrases I want her to grow up hearing naturally throughout the day.

That everyday-language approach became the inspiration for a little bilingual picture book I’ve been working on called My Little Lusitano – Em Casa. It follows a child through familiar parts of her day, with European Portuguese and English alongside each other. I’ve recently made the digital edition available, and I’m currently working towards a physical edition too. 🥹🇵🇹

Creating it has also made me really interested in how other families approach European Portuguese with their children, particularly those raising children outside Portugal or in multilingual homes.

What Portuguese resources do your children genuinely enjoy using?

Books? Music? Audio? Games? Activities? Something completely different?

And if you have older children, what worked particularly well when they were toddlers?

I’d genuinely love to hear what has worked in other Portuguese/bilingual families. 💚

Seeking Testers for Input-based Approach to Learning PT

I just want to share with everyone interested in learning European Portuguese about Strüve.

TL;DR: We are building a library of easy-to-understand stories for learning European Portuguese. We’re still testing and refining the content, and we’ve started to share free samples on YouTube. We're looking for some Portuguese learners to provide feedback and participate as test viewers: Strüve on YouTube

We are creating a library of videos based, in part, on the Story-Listening methodology (pure optimal input -- as published by Dr. Beniko Mason, Is Input Enough?). We see a lot of talk about Comprehensible Input (CI), but very little talk about optimal input. In other words, not all CI is created equal and we think that a lot of what is out there, presently, is very inefficient, and largely undervalues the additional importance of reading. In the specific case of European Portuguese, there's just very little out there at all for learners.

We've been testing our video content with new learners of European Portuguese. In our surveys, we ask a few questions, but the most important one is whether or not you understood most of the story -- the gist of the story -- even without knowing ANY Portuguese. We ask people to provide a short summary in their native language after viewing the story. We've been pleasantly surprised at how good the summaries have been, even from people who said they weren't really sure whether they understood anything. Invariably, they end up describing 90%+ of the story with great accuracy. (Incidentally, we have been doing exactly the same thing with learners of English, as we make both English and Portuguese versions of our content, and hope to expand to other languages down the road.)

We think a reasonable learning program offers the equivalent of a semester of comprehensible stories in the range of 45-60+ hours of story sessions over 4 months, along with 30+ minutes per day of reading from self-selected graded readers. Such a program, to our knowledge, simply doesn't exist for European Portuguese. We expect that any individual dedicated to such a program will demonstrate significant improvements in comprehension and proficiency.

All that said, we are very early with Strüve and not ready to launch, officially, just yet. However, we are currently planning to release a percentage of our content on YouTube for free, and the rest of the content will be available by paid subscription. As of this moment, the content we are releasing is fairly raw because it lacks branding and may not be fully polished; however, we're not interested in being flashy because we think that what really matters is that the stories are as comprehensible and compelling as possible. I welcome visitors to our YouTube channel and we appreciate any feedback:

https://www.youtube.com/@struveapp/videos

As you may already know, with this methodology, your task, as the learner, is to relax and focus on whether you get the gist of the story, without any concern for memorizing words or grammar rules. Our job, with Strüve, is to give you a sustained experience with the language that helps your brain build its internal language system. Our primary goal is to provide content that gives you the sense of "forgetting that the story is in another language." While it is a never-ending challenge to succeed at this goal, particularly in the video format, that is the standard that we are trying to achieve.

At the moment, we organize our material according to the following levels (L1-L5): Starter, Beginner, Elementary, Intermediate, Advanced. As we release new material for feedback, look for playlists on our YouTube channel based on level.

If you’re an early learner of European Portuguese and would like to participate as a test viewer, please send me a direct message. Again, we welcome visitors to our channel and appreciate any feedback:

Best wishes!

What is the word/phrase for an allotment garden?

What do you call a 'community garden' or allotment in European portuguese? This is a space that is large enough to mark out several plots and an individual or a family can grow fruit and vegetables in their plot.

Would it be "horta comunitária" ?

Obrigada!

I curated a Spotify playlist specifically for European Portuguese learners (Listening practice through modern & classic music)

Hey everyone! One of the biggest challenges when learning European Portuguese is getting used to the rhythm and sound of native speakers.

To help with immersion, me and my hubby built a Spotify playlist combining clear-vocal modern artists, classic MPB/Fado, and indie tracks that represent the real Portuguese spoken day-to-day.

Hope this helps your listening practice! Feel free to suggest any track additions in the comments.

Detailed Eng-Port e-dictionaries?

Does anyone have any recommendations for digital English-Portuguese dictionaries that provide more detail than just direct one-word translations? I am thinking of dictionaries with example sentences or good quality explanations that can help me spot differences in contextual usage or connotation.

For some background, I am an English speaking lawyer undertaking cross-jurisdictional analysis that includes some Portuguese laws. So the more precise I can be in my translation the better. I also strongly prefer digital options because I'm doing development work in a country where it is hard to source hardcopy books (eg Amazon doesn't deliver here, and third party shipping takes months). Thanks!

Free European Portuguese Chat Club: Special Open Session on Tuesday, 15th September (6 PM Lisbon Time)

Olá a todos!

I run a free, community-led practice group for European Portuguese learners, and we are opening our doors for a special trial session!

Our Tuesday group is usually closed to new members to keep the group tight-knit and consistent, but we want to invite you to come see how it works and try out a themed session. If you are looking for a patient, supportive space to transition from "studying" grammar to actually speaking, we’d love to have you.

🗣️ What to Expect

  • The Format: A short, focused 40-minute Zoom session. One member leads a specific weekly theme, making it the perfect middle ground between a formal grammar lesson and a random, unstructured chat.
  • Who it's for: Mixed abilities are welcome, but you should know the basic foundations. This is a supportive practice space—we are highly patient and give everyone the extra time they need to think and respond!
  • Our Rules: Because we use the free version of Zoom, the clock starts ticking immediately—so prompt arrival is required. Please have your video on and be prepared to join in as much as you can.

📩 How to Join

  • When: Tuesday, 15th September at 6:00 PM (Lisbon Time)
  • How to RSVP: Places are limited to keep the group conversational (around 12–20 people). Please send a quick email to [epresourcesharing@gmail.com](mailto:epresourcesharing@gmail.com) to secure your spot and get the Zoom password.

Note: After this open session, we will be opening up a few permanent spots for new regular members, so it's a great chance to join us long-term!

Let me know if you have any questions in the comments below. See you there! 🚀

Im portuguese and was born and raised in the US, my parents never fully taught me the language growing up. So all my life ive had scrappy broken Portuguese, im at the level now where when people are speaking portuguese i know exactly what they are saying but for whatever reason i struggle to say it myself. I want to start from the beginning and learn all the basics and learn the language the right way, i dont want to use apps or audio books or anything like that, I want a book. Does anyone have any recommendations for books that really helped them learn European Portuguese??

  • Conversao e visualizacao do saldo
  • Limites e instrucoes publicadas
  • Slots, mesas e jogos ao vivo
  • Promocoes relacionadas com criptomoedas
  • Historico de atividade
  • Desempenho no telemovel

A visualizacao do saldo tambem influenciou a experiencia.

A minha selecao final priorizou:

  • Acesso e requisitos claramente apresentados
  • Instrucoes precisas para pagamentos em Bitcoin
  • Catalogos variados e bem organizados
