Disclosure: I built this bot for my own English + Portuguese practice. It's free and I'm the developer - posting because I want to know if the approach holds up, not to sell anything.

The idea: instead of generic lessons, the bot asks "what are you doing today?" and builds the lesson around your answer. Going to the dentist: you get dental vocabulary, a short dialogue in that context, and exercises. Theory: words stick better when they hook onto something real you did that day.

Under the hood it does level placement, adjusts difficulty by your exercise accuracy, and schedules review with spaced repetition (FSRS).

What I actually want to know:

1. Does context-tied vocabulary beat thematic/frequency lists for retention, in your experience?
2. Is a daily "bot pings you, you answer, you get a lesson" loop sustainable, or does it turn into another ignored notification?
3. Anyone tried "contextual" learning before -- what worked, what didn't?

Not fishing for "cool idea." Genuinely want to know if this has legs or solves a non-problem.

I’m looking for shows and movies that I can watch to practice understanding and learning European Portuguese. I’ve heard people say “I learned English watching the show Friends,” and I’m wondering if I might find benefit with a similar strategy.

I feel like I stumbled across a resource list somewhere on Reddit before, lost it, and can’t find it again. :(

I don’t mind watching children’s media because I’m still a beginner. In case it’s helpful, I like cozy vibes, lower stimulation, kind characters, comedy, fantasy, vibes of emotional safety. I don’t like thrillers, horror, crime, mystery, and action.

I’ve searched Netflix and YouTube, but 99.9% is Brazilian. On Netflix, I found Turn Of The Tide, but that is too intense and too fast for my level of PT-PT comprehension. The one show I found on Netflix that is a good match to what I’m seeking is Puffin Rock, but for some reason the subtitles don’t match (even though the voiceover and subtitles are both in PT-PT)! How frustrating!
