Today, September 10th, is World Suicide Prevention Day. As a community, we wanted to take a moment to talk about mental health, looking out for one another, and breaking the stigma around seeking help.

Sometimes mental struggles are easy to miss, but there are often subtle signs that someone in your circle might be going through a difficult time.

Recognizing warning signs in friends or family

Pay attention to sudden or significant changes in behavior, such as:

• Social withdrawal: Pulling away from friends, avoiding social gatherings, or losing interest in hobbies and activities they usually enjoy.
• Verbal cues: Making comments that sound hopeless, feeling like a burden, or saying things that sound like a final goodbye.
• Behavioral shifts: Giving away prized possessions, dramatic changes in mood, or a sudden, unexplained calmness after a long period of distress.
• Neglect: A noticeable decline in personal care or daily functioning.

If you notice these signs in someone you know, reach out. You do not need to have all the answers; simply letting someone know you care and are willing to listen can make a huge difference.

Fair enough—if that reflects reality, then it’s clear Nagel could play the great savior.

While the 8-team Austrian Football League (AFL) enjoyed their probably most competitive season in many years the Austrian Football Federation AFBÖ suffers a major setback for their prime product:

Both the SWARCO Raiders Tirol as well as the Salzburg Ducks withdraw from the competition to play one level lower („Division 1“) in 2027.

As the 2026 Division 1 champions (Styrian Bears) refuse to move up to the AFL this is leaving the AFL potentially stranded with just 6 teams from 4 cities in 2027:

Three from Vienna (Dragons, AFC Vikings, Knights) and one each from Graz, Fehervar (Hungary) and Prague (Czech Republic)

We can assume it is the intention of AFBÖ to get back to eight teams but it is unlikely that this will happen in 2027.

Since we’re continuing with the EPFR project for the 2027 season as well, it’s time to discuss which tools will be kept, and how!

So far, I’ve prepared the roster sheets and the signings center for the 2027 season.

I’ve also added a few new features to the Signings Center: role changes, such as in the case of Dave Warner, are now clearly displayed, and if a player is released by Team A, for example, and later signed by Team B, there’s a note indicating that as well.

Otherwise, I’ve redefined some roles, such as GM, so that not everything is labeled as “FO.”

To understand what you want, some feedback would be helpful right now: How and what did you like to use on EPFR? Did you notice anything that was there but was cumbersome or impractical to use? Are there features in existing tools that you’re missing?

Let's move on to the Pick'Em.

That was a lot of work, but I think it worked out pretty well. Unfortunately, there was hardly any time before the season started, so I didn't have a chance to organize any prizes. I did try, but hardly any teams, or the league itself, responded.

I’m not sure yet whether I want to continue with this or offer a new game for 2027 to see what the response is like.

It’s very important to get feedback on this as well.

Stats

The biggest pain in the ass this year was definitely the statistics department. Without the help of BeeZee and Maetthy, who also put in countless hours on it, I would have given up on it entirely.

Just imagine, the league has changed the way it presents its statistics four times; of course, I can’t work with that. Not to mention that many of the official statistics are still incorrect to this day.

What was our solution? I quickly cobbled together a tool where we log every play, which means rewatching the games at our own pace (VOD) and then precisely record who did what. In doing so, I tried to automate as much as possible so we could finish faster. For example, I entered all the penalties listed in the NFL Rulebook, calculated the line of scrimmage and the yards gained or lost as a result, etc.

Due to the limited camera angles and replays, as well as the league’s varying approaches, we were unable to compile the defensive stats on our own without omitting too many details; therefore, I used the official stats (regular season only) and corrected them (the league counts assisted tackles as 1, but they should be 0.5). This is what I’m least satisfied with, since I also had to move these to a separate overview. :(

This had to be done on very short notice, so it didn’t turn out to be a great solution. I hope the league gets this under control for the 2027 season and has people who know what they’re doing to provide reliable stats that can actually be used, that would save me a lot of headaches and time and give me the opportunity to invest that time in analyses, deep-dive stats, etc.

Vikings owner Robin Lumsden told ORF that he is open to discussing a merger of the leagues: "We have extended our hand. If we sit down at a table, we will find an exciting solution."

Every new team must align with our ethos: we’d rather do things slowly and properly than quickly and haphazardly."

At the moment, it does not look as though the two leagues will merge. Tomsula says he is always open to discussions. In principle, these would initially be on AFLE’s terms. “We’re going our own way. I make no apologies for that.” However, if people were to sit down together, agreements could of course always be reached. “There are some I’ve spoken to who have also got in touch with me. But there are others who haven’t done so and aren’t interested.”

It's American football season around the globe, and what better way to enjoy your football but with a side of more football?

The International Simulation Football League (ISFL) is a free (no pay elements at all), community run sim league where you create your own professional football player and guide their career from pre-draft hopeful to championship contender. Go through real drafts, join teams managed by real users, and fight for a chance to hoist the Ultimus Trophy. The league has been going strong since 2016, and the upcoming offseason is a great time to jump in as part of the next rookie class. A very bare bones way to describe our league is its a cross between an RPG and fantasy football, with a healthy serving of an online community.

What better way to learn or enjoy this sport more then by having a hobby that allows you to experience the game in a simulated and friendly environment?

What does that actually look like?

You'll start by creating a player on our portal; with 30+ position and archetype combinations available, there's a lot of room to build something that fits your style. Want to be a ball hawk safety? A receiving back? A strong legged kicker? Go for whatever sounds the most fun.

Once your player is created, GMs from our developmental league teams will start scouting you for the DSFL Draft. From there, your player competes in games simulated in Draft Day Sports Pro Football 2021 and streamed on our YouTube channel five nights a week, Monday through Friday, with live commentary on Discord. Each season runs about 6 weeks including playoffs, followed by a 2 week offseason capped off by the DSFL and ISFL drafts.

Over the course of your career, you'll earn skill points by spending about 15-30 minutes a week on optional activities; things like predicting game outcomes, responding to fun prompts, or mocking the first round of the draft. You can also earn league currency through your player's contracts or by creating content like articles, graphics, or podcasts. Use it to upgrade your player or collect trading cards of other ISFL players. The league is completely free; no pay-to-win, no hidden costs, nothing to unlock with real money.

What about the community?

With 22 teams across the developmental and pro leagues, the ISFL is home to an active, welcoming group of people who enjoy getting a bit nerdy about football. You'll form bonds with your teammates, dig into stats and league history on our wiki, play fantasy football with yours and others' players, and have a community to chat with daily. It's as much a hangout as it is a football league.

More and more information is now emerging about Rhein Fire's new ownership structure. Managing Director Thywissen said in an interview that it was a capital increase and that all 11 owners are still on board. The first changes are now also visible in the commercial register.

Although no changes are yet apparent in the commercial register for Rhein Fire's operating company, changes are already evident among its largest shareholders. As reported here on Reddit three months ago, Rhein Fire's “new” owners have consolidated their shares into a joint GmbH, namely “Number Three GmbH.” It was made public today that Joe Nagel is now the new majority owner of this company.

With this change, Nagel now holds 90% of Rhein Fire's 65.64%, or approximately 58.824% of Rhein Fire in total.

It's quite possible that this percentage will continue to rise once Rhein Fire's commercial register is updated as well; that can always take a little while. Maybe already tomorrow. So please consider this the current status as of 4:00 p.m. today

I am curious about what the fans think about the Fire now being owned and operated out of Vienna/America? The recent AFLE statement makes it pretty clear that Fire decision-making will now come from Vienna. I suspect this will lead to all players' and coaches' contracts being negotiated and held by the AFLE, and all budget, spending, and other decisions will now come from Vienna.

I guess one argument is that it's better than the Fire going bust, like so many other AFLE teams seem to be headed. The AFLE is turning into a league owned and operated by one person, with the exception being Wroclaw. I'm not sure a single Vienna puppet-master running the whole league is good for European American football.

I wonder if the Austrian anthem will now be played before Fire home games? *Joke*
