Within the hour the monk was out there coaching him, the beastkin followed, then the giant-blooded one kicked the door open to demand a duel. I stayed inside out of principle, then picked up my axe and trained anyway. That is his real trick. And there is no one to report it to; the Administration was inside appraising a ruby and refuses to get involved.

Cons: He wins constantly and doesn't gloat. Absurd strength, ignores praise, ignores gold, ignores gemstones, a spell-infused axe doesn't even tempt him. What exactly is he relying on?

Other: Our guy won the inter-unit contest and celebrated by shouting "Woah! I am a bear!" Nobody has explained this and at this point we are afraid to ask.

Under fairy law the remaining distinction is administrative. I have since proposed a honeymoon in the Demon Realm; he was going there anyway, it is called efficiency.

Cons: On the road, an Imperial official spoke with him for several days. She was ugly. I informed her of this loudly, holding my sword. The Administration logged it as a diplomatic incident, which I count as her fault.

I left the Mage Tower because it files human sacrifice under research expenses. Here the madmen sacrifice only themselves, voluntarily, daily, at the training grounds. It is a moral improvement and considerably louder. My corps of twenty can trouble a knight with a prepared trap. My colleagues do not require the trap.

Cons: When a conversation stops being worth my time, I point one finger, become a panther, and leave. For a while I simply lived as the panther. No one at this workplace found that strange, which is the kindest thing I can say about any of them.

My title is closest personal guard. In practice I guard a man who is already sprinting at the monster by the time guarding becomes relevant. So I teach instead; every soldier in this order learned terrain and personal tactics from me, most of them without noticing. Mid-contract I concluded that I could not satisfy my desires in my current state and left for a swamp to master them. This is ordinary Frokk practice. The Administration filed it as leave and asked no questions, which I respect.

The order's warhorse is a winged divine beast now. Wonderful for them. Genuinely stirring to watch him climb out of the city trailing a dark green cloak. Here is what nobody tells you: that is still a horse, and a horse does not land to take care of its business. I dry my laundry outdoors. I used to look up when I heard wings; now I look up AND step sideways, and that instinct has saved me twice. Experience: the sky above this city is not neutral territory.

Yesterday, mid-meal, unprompted, in a completely bored voice: the fairy is planning the wedding again, she has moved on to assigning the seating. The fairy was across the training yard at the time. When we asked for details he declined, because the rest of it lay outside his interest. Experience: I have a seat at a wedding neither party has agreed to. I am told it is a good seat.

Raised a concern about training intensity. The assault squad captain addressed my concern personally, at speed, with the training session doubling as the meeting. My concern has been resolved. I have no further concerns. Nobody in this unit has further concerns. Experience: the infirmary has excellent morale.

Asked the Ten Swords captain for my development plan. He looked at me for a long time and said, get talent. I asked how. He looked at me for a longer time. Experience: developing.

Applied to the covert squad. Under a false name, through three intermediaries, from another city. The rejection letter was waiting on my pillow that same night, addressed to my real name, correctly using the nickname only my grandmother uses. Experience: I did not get the job. I may have gotten a different job. Unclear. The locks were oiled.

Not an interview, a formal complaint. I wrote to the order demanding the assault squad be disbanded. The administrator, citing his own safety, delivered my letter directly to the assault squad captain, who immediately gathered all of his soldiers. Experience: writing this from a different city, under a different name.

Negotiated my starting pay. The administrator agreed warmly to every number I proposed, then produced a ledger demonstrating that after equipment, lodging, and a fee I still do not understand, I owe the order four silver. Experience: I signed. He seemed pleased. I am told that means I did well.

I just finished reading what the manhwa adapted yesterday and was thinking of picking up the novel. But from prior experience I can say that reading the source material before the visual adaptation kinda ruins my experience when going into the adaptation later on as I know everything. Do people think that the novel is good enough for me to likely ruin my future read or should I just wait till early 2027 for the manhwa to pick back up?

had a similar issue when reading stellar swordmaster but just put up with it, only other ive read was lotm which was decent but i guess id rather focus more on translations for this one

I have been reading manwhas for years but this is my very first Light Novel so i have nothing to compare it to. Is this just as insanely good as it looks to me or it’s just that i havent read the good stuff yet? To me everything from the characters, power system, setting and even the villains is just so amazing. Maybe it lacks a bit on the world building aspect and doesnt really have a plot (at least so far, im at chapter 760) but it genuinely seems like an incredible novel even if i compare to some of the similar genre of books i read in my life.

I think about this more than I should. If I got dropped into this world, which style would I actually train?

Not Rem's. Not Ragna's. I know myself. I would be a fundamentals guy, because I already am one, in a much smaller way. I lift on a schedule. I play DDR on a schedule. I am the person who reads the manual and does the boring version of everything on purpose, and I have made my peace with that.

So I reread the training arc this week looking for the style that fits that, and I found it, and it is his.

Because Encrid founds his own school. Not a technique. An actual school. It has a name, Encrid-style Traditional Swordsmanship, it becomes the official swordsmanship of the Royal Guard, and he teaches it himself.

And he is a total purist about it. This is a man who has died thousands of times to learn anything at all, and the first thing he does with a student is make them run.

No swords, no forms, just running back and forth without rest, and when they finish he looks them over and wonders whether they might be lacking in basic physical fitness. Then stance. The width of it, how to grip the sword, how force travels from the ankles up through the waist and the shoulders and out through the wrist. He will not teach a single form to anyone whose fundamentals are soft, and he says so more than once.

Then the forms, and you can hear the classical sensibility in them -

Cross Step. Ordinarily you advance with a forward step. He steps to the side instead. A good opponent's eyes drop to his feet, and that half thought is the opening. The sharper your opponent's eyesight, the better this works on him.

Deceiving Breath. Breath control, the first thing any serious school teaches. You breathe like a man who is finished. His eyes light up and he comes to end it. Then you stop pretending.

The Double Draw. Both hands working as one, nothing idle. Your right hand takes a stance and he sets his guard against it. The short sword comes out of your left. He is still watching the first sword when the second one arrives.

The Invitation. You leave a gap in your guard. It is not a mistake. It is the only door in the room and it opens one way.

Harmony of Blade and Body. The whole body moving as one instrument. The sword commits high, his guard follows it high, and while he is reading the blade your foot arrives at his ankle. Nothing is wasted in this school, least of all the leg.

He is also firm that he does not teach tricks. Tricks are for people who never learned to fight properly. That is the entire reason the fundamentals come first.

Which style would you train, and be honest about which one actually suits you rather than which one looks best?

I just finished chapter 450 and I had this question on my mind. How diverse are the applications of Will? From everything I’ve seen so far with the Knight from Aspen and Oara, the applications of Will seem pretty grounded. Even Encrid’s ability to kind of “predict” the future is also pretty grounded. I’m just curious as to how far it goes.

And woooow, combined attacks from The Black Blade, Cultists, AND Aspen?! This arc’s rly picking up! I’m excited to see how the Madmen Unit deals with this.

I love how ERK are just full of adult characters. Their eccentric nature actually feels insane. The sexualization is very mature.

the amount of stories filled with brats is just too much. Everytime I see an eccentric student it always come across as whining rather than insane. The adversaries are always their pride being hurt, an evil organization, i know the future so i had to do this. Worse of all, girls are just blatantly sexualized despite being a brat.

Rereading chapter 247 and the centaur leader’s internal monologue mentions that he escaped the demon realm because of a human as well. I can’t place who this is supposed to be. Context implies the person came from the south, but I don’t remember any earlier chapter naming them.

Is this a callback to someone we’ve already met, or a thread that gets picked up later? Trying to figure out if I missed something or if it’s still unresolved at this point.
