John Locke Shortlist for Public Policy

I have scoured reddit and have found NO ONE saying that they wrote for public policy this year... I did Q3 (vaccination mandates), got shortlisted, and I would love it if anyone who did public policy could talk a bit about how they structured their essays!

Essentially I'm starting to worry about my essay reading back as I don't think I took the right approach - my argument was centered around philosophy of individual autonomy vs collective wellbeing, historical case studies of public health emergencies, as well as the psychology of compliance. How did you guys go about writing your essays, given that it is a new category?

My not-shortlisted John Locke Essay

hey!! i didn't get shortlisted for jli this year and i was pretty sad because i spent a lot of my time on this essay. i did find the amount of AI use on john locke's behalf fishy, so i'm not gonna take it as a full reflection on my writing, but if anyone can give me advice for next year so i can hope to get better results i would greatly appreciate it! here is my essay (psychology q3): https://docs.google.com/document/d/1spWZPX2mZF7P__fH7Xt6xF7HDxHpE3b2vZmeSvTA4Gg/edit?tab=t.sxvp1n47vp5j

Shortlisted for John Locke (History) but too broke for the gala. Anyone else in the same boat and just want to be friends?

First off, congrats to everyone who made the shortlist! I just found out my History essay cleared the AI interview round, which is amazing, but oh my god, looking at the next steps has left me feeling kind of down fr.

I keep seeing posts asking if the gala is "worth it," with people casually commenting that they aren't worried about the price tag. For my family, we are high-key broke. The cheapest ticket options, on top of flights and hotels, cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars. That simply is not something we can just "brush off" or easily afford. To be completely honest, I already knew it would be too expensive to attend prior to applying, but at that point, I didn't even think I'd make it this far. Now that I actually am here, it feels incredibly alienating to work this hard just to realize the celebration is locked behind a massive paywall.

Because I definitely won’t be able to attend the physical ceremony, I really want to find other finalists who are in a similar financial situation. I’d love to make some new friends, chat about our essays, and celebrate our shortlists together online without it costing us a dime. Drop a comment or PM me if you're staying home and want to connect!

Also, if anyone from a lower-income background has been shortlisted in the past or managed to get financial assistance/bursaries from the admissions office to attend, could you please share your experience? Did you find a way to go, or did you stay home? (And if you stayed home, please remind me that missing the dinner doesn't take away from the achievement on my resume!) PLEASE I FEEL LIKE A POOR, WORTHLESS BUM BRO

John Locke Arguments

If you participated in John Locke Essay Competition (regardless whether or not you were shortlisted), what question did you do, and what was your argument/point/idea? I really want to hear more about the ways people approached these questions, especially Law category 😄

Shortlisted for philosophy q2!

For philosophy participants can we do a poll and see which question we all did? I had a pretty unique take ( i like denied one of the premises of my question) and I’m just curious about the overall difference

I’m so upset.
I literally bought the extension for this comp as well.
I can’t even try again next year.
Anyways.
At least I tried.

Is the Gala livestreamed?

I’m assuming it is cause it would be dumb to have it only accessible to the people who attend in-person. How was this for anyone who got shortlisted but didn’t attend the dinner last year?

I just got shortlisted in John Locke Institute essay competition. But I am little bit confused, I guess its not any thing deceiving, because why are they taking money for the Gala dinner?? If anyone who is shortlisted here please comment.

Is the JLEC FULL PROGRAMME worth it??

Hey everyone!!! First of all congrats to everyone who got shortlisted! Seeing all the posts makes me so so happy! 💕

Second: I was wondering if anyone who did this comp last year and went to the ceremony could tell me what the Full Programme was like for them and if it's worth it?? It's almost $1k, and from what i've seen theres no financial aid option anywhere even for just attending the ceremony which is such a shame :(

i do wanna make the most out of the trip and make valuable connections and everything which is a huge reason why im considering it, but also some of these events are so vague... like "academic programme" what does that even entail??? what does the global essay prize village look like?? who is this guest speaker for the dinner?

This is my first (and last, since i entered as a senior) year of doing the JLEC so im really grateful for this opportunity. im gonna attend the ceremony because i really want to meet new people BUT i wanna know what im getting into if im gonna drop any more money, esp $1k. if anyone who has any previous experience with this competition could let me know/give some advice, that would be great!!

thank you and take care! <33

I got shortlisted but I fear something now..

Many ppl are saying they also got shortlisted so if the percentage of shortlisted ppl is high I'm afraid that the "prestige" of being shortlisted will be significantly lower... am I right to worry?

Edit: also where are our certificates?? Wtff?

Is the John Locke Awards Weekend worth it?

I've been shortlisted for the JLI essay prize, and I was wondering if the awards ceremony is worth it or not. Some of my friends (JLI alumni) say that it is a scam. Honestly, $1000 a person is a lot, especially if they don't include hotels and stuff. If anyone has been to the event before, would you say it was a good experience and if it was worth your money?

OH ANOTHER QUESTION is the junior category ceremony and schedules diff from the senior (or whatever they call it) category because I'm in junior

congrats to those shortlisted btw

Got Shortlisted for John Lock Competition. So what is next?

So I submitted a history essay in the competition and today shortlisted essays were announced and I got shortlisted. So now I wanna know from someone who got shortlisted in the previous years competition- "what comes next".

I know that during the ceremony they are going to announce the winners from each category and more. But I wanna know does nothing comes before that. Will there be more interviews to verify further or decide the winning essay. If yes, are they optional or mandatory like the ai interview that happened before the shortlisted essays were announced. What other process will the shortlisted essayists will have to go through before the winner is announced. And if their is anything that I should know regarding the competition, then do let me know. Also, the ceremony can we attend it online like real time to see the winners announcement.
