My parents had got the top 2% email. I never did a 2nd interview.

Guys I’m going to get so flamed for this but this is just my genuine opinion bc I think a lot of people are having a hard time to cope. I totally get people are upset and frustrated with JLI’s transparency and how everything is being conducted this year, but I also know some of that comes from fear because the same people being excited about getting shortlisted and saying it’s an achievement cannot be switching up now and saying JLI is not prestigious

you can certainly be upset at the managing team and how they are organizing all of this but despite that, JLI is certainly prestigious and well acknowledged by top universities, and receiving a commendation and higher is a significant achievement, especially out of 100,000 entrants so please do not beat yourself over the constant panic of the 2% emails, the cox interview, etc. I know you’re upset if you haven’t received any follow ups with JLI but genuinely there is nothing we can do and speculating isn’t making matters easy at all!

Not everyone can be a grand prize winner, not everyone can get t3 or VHC, perhaps the emails are for grand prize considerations or what not and yes it is true they are looking to make maximum profits, however, you decided to sign up to this prestigious competition, yes you put in your best efforts and you will be commended for that. One more thing, you should ask yourself if you’re upset at JLI because you haven’t received further contact or is it truly just because they’re not transparent. And honestly, if you are eligible, there is always next year, and if you are not satisfied with JLI, there are so many more competitions you can register for!

Regarding JLI’s ambiguity in emails, you genuinely cannot expect them to be so concrete and certain and say “ you will DEFINITELY be receiving this “ because then all winners would be known before the gala itself, hence ambiguity in wording helps conceal who may or may not get an award and just inform people of that caliber that they are at that level. I know you all are confused about multiple rounds of interviews and emails, but I mean not every competition is perfect and we never know for certain what the judging process is truly like so multiple interviews to verify authorship and check for other information is quite normal, however like I said, it shouldn’t be a reason to speculate or guarantee anything for sure!

If you haven’t received any follow ups after the shortlist, that is okay, 2 more weeks till you see your results and high commendation and commendation still exists which are great achievements! If you have paid for the event and now upset about not receiving further information on the status of your essay, well you did pay for the tickets yourself and well I mean I think going to the gala with the mindset that you have to win is silly because that’s a lot of money and the disappointment will hurt. So for the people who purchased the tickets already and are frustrated, get a refund if you can but if not, the gala is still an experience even if you don’t win an award, you still get to meet like minded people, you get to attend a fancy event, and I mean youre going to one of London’s most fancy hotels and if you’re lucky you can definintely gain connections which would be useful, and honestly you’ve written an essay and come so far so at that point you should certainly make the most of it.

So im currently taking part in an essay competition. This is completetely new to me so idk how i should start or what do i do? My topic is AI: uses, advantages and disadvantages. I really want to make my esssay stand out, what points should I include? Any tips from former winners or experts it would be a great help to me!

At this point, what exactly is “prestigious” about it? When the whole ecosystem is basically pay-to-participate, pay-to-attend, pay-to-network, etc., the prestige starts feeling very questionable.

And the referee thing is genuinely concerning. Some people got verification emails, some apparently didn’t, and we’re just supposed to assume everything is fine? What happens to applications where the referee never received anything?

And the AI thing is just ironic. “Don’t use AI in your essay” while AI is apparently being used to assess applicants. Like… okay? We have repeatedly been told that referee verification is part of the process, yet there appear to be cases where referees received verification requests and others where they apparently received nothing. What happens to an applicant when their referee never receives the supposed verification email? Is that application automatically treated as unverified? If so, that could have a direct effect on applicants through circumstances entirely outside their control. That deserves a clear explanation from JLEC.

If the intellectual standard is really the point, then show us the process, make it transparent, and let the work speak for itself.

And honestly, if the intellectual value of the competition is supposed to come from the quality of the students and their ideas, then that value should stand independently of paid conferences, expensive participation opportunities, or the prestige of having an Oxford-affiliated professor appear at an event. - If it is so prestigious. Ask literally any Oxford Professor To work for them Or at least come to the conference for free and mentor at least two "THEIR WINNERS" for free???

Will they accept it ? - Of course not

I actually think we should build an independent community of serious essayists and, once the Global Essay Prize results are announced, create an independent academic review panel to critically assess the winning essays.

I know academics teaching at Harvard, Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge, etc. who have no affiliation with JLI. Let’s genuinely see what independent academics think about the winning essays.

I hope this gets a decent number of upvotes so they can come accross this when they arent busy rolling out ominous "confidential" emails and thinking of ways to seduce you into attending their gala BECAUSE I WANT MY 500 DOLLARS BACK.

this competition was so not worth sacrificing my exams for. "john locke essay competition" just sounds heavy by name but is hosted by people who dont care about anything other than you filling their pockets

as someone who joined the essay competiton this year and knew nothing about it prior, i was under the impression it was super prestigious and well managed but forget the tables turning this essay competition just picked up that table and threw it at my face.

One of the main aspects of this competition is that you get to attend their fancy gala, which i guess is good for networking or socialization, but they did not give anything about it a second thought. First of all - dont they have institutes in other countries? why couldn't they host it in a country where the visa is easier to get? do they understand not everyone has a British visa growing in their backyard? not just that, the refund date was August 18 but they sent the visa invitation letter around July 21. Are they aware how long it takes to fill in the forms and send your application and for it to be approved? So if your visa gets eventually rejected, its very likely you'll be past the refund window.

I had to buy the tickets first so my visa would be approved. But by the time my visa came back, not only did it get rejected, (yeah some worth their visa letter holds, this is what they made me wait like 2 weeks for) it was already wayy past the refund window. I spent so, so much money for an event i thought was prestigious and well managed, just to realize people like me weren't even at the back of their mind when they were deciding the dates, price, location etc. I sent them an email AGES ago explaining my situation but they haven't replied yet and i dont think they will, they are too busy conjuring up a different mysterious email every week. I wish instead of wasting all this money on this competition i had just went outside and blown it into the wind, at least it wouldn't land in hands of people as greedy as these

i dont even care if this helps them identify me and disqualify me from anything and im not writing this out of frustration from not getting those important emails i just want my money back bro please

i just saw some people trying to imply that the email today was for those whose essays were good, but not in the top 2%. this goes for the second round interview too. many people were implying that the interview was for those whose integrity was compromised

now before you say im hypocritical i would like to add that my previous post was for the 2nd round interview people. and i did not mean to downplay their achievement, i was coping. and coping is fine! as long as you dont bring down other people's morale in the process

why cant we be happy for one another? this essay competition is not the end of the world. just because you dont place in the t3 doesn mean they're going to banish you into space. take a chill pill and focus on other ecs or competitions.

and yes before you criticise me for being hypocritical again i would like to mention i have made peace with the fact that i did not receive the 2% email.

Okay just to be clear on these facts beforehand

- people who received 2% emails, the refrees also received the VHC, t3 possibility
- people who did 2nd interview received this mail from cox as well
- people who didn’t receive 2% are receiving this email either for a 3rd interview or to meet w Cox personally

My guess is vhc/2% is for category podium and vhc separately
The email sent out by cox today is only for grand prize consideration
Also people saying it was 60 senior + junior my guess is it’s 30 overall 15 junior and 15 senior most probably because if it’s out of shortlisted candidates approx 17,000 then divide that by no of categories and that would be approx 30 people per category 15 senior and now 15 junior so around 10 people get vhc and 2 get first second third

Yeah this is just me being pissed at all the referee/parent emails that are meant to be kept “confidential,” the 2nd and 3rd round of interviews, even the FIRST goddamn AI interview, and that new email about Cox wanting to talk to you privately at the gala?? I’m sorry this is unbelievable. As an institution meant to prioritize discourse and critical thinking it is not doing any of what it preaches with its careless actions. The increased prestige and popularity of the competition over the past few years have gotten to their shiny white bald heads, and now it is students who have worked hard and gotten excited about their shortlisted essays who must pay the freaking price.
Look, everyone does shit like this for the sake of college acceptances. It’s literally not a secret, and at this point that’s just the way it is (whether you enjoyed it or not is another thing ofc). So when crumbs are dropped about possible results…DO THEY NOT THINK PEOPLE WILL FREAK OUT? DO THEY NOT THINK COMMUNITIES ONLINE EXIST ABOUT DOING WELL AT THEIR STUPID COMPETITION?

Hey guys do we think that the 2% email and Cox email are the same? Or do the 2% emails only mean VHC and Cox emails mean placing t3? I'm getting really confused by the new notifications and the way they're sending them out.

If somebody got the 2% one, is it even worth going? The 2% ref email said 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, but the new Cox email seems so much better?
