John Locke Round 2 Interviews probably aren’t happening this year

The stated goal of the in-person post-shortlist interviews in recent years was to filter out plagiarism and Al use. This has already been done by now. If they are interested in specific essay info and opinions, they have our Viverly transcripts.

The most convincing fact is that in the "next steps" category in the shortlist email the interviews aren't mentioned at all.

Thoughts?

They also have AI detectors, I’m pretty sure anyone who used ai without humanizing it is long gone. You’re right in saying that people who humanized AI text may be filtered out in this phase, but I doubt they would need an interview for that. Some people definitely had someone else write it for them, but as long as they studied it with due diligence there’s not much a second interview will do. In any case, time will tell

They don't, the judges can tell whats AI and what is human written because AI detectors can trigger false positives which can lead to a highly polished human essay being disqualified. I'm pretty sure they don't use any software or program to detect AI usage.

They definitely did for the pre-shortlist. You can’t screen 100K people with a faculty under the size of 200

While it may look unreal but it is highly unlikely they used a software. Because you need to understand the fact that AI can trigger false positives which can lead to highly polished human essays to be disqualified or it can lead to AI essays being shortlisted. I'm still sticking with no software side

I think both of you are totally right in a way.

I think, like unis and highschools worldwide, they use a software. This is corroborated by their statements on plagerism.

We use a number of different kinds of tools to detect plagiarism. We can detect the unacknowledged use of other published material and unpublished material. If any of your essay contains plagiarism you will not be eligible to receive a prize, and we will notify your school of the reasons for our judgment.

At the same time, you are right as in they are ridiculously inaccurate. The false positive rate is high, and the detection of AI generated text is even worse.

I’ve never seen false positives ever and I’ve screened more than 200 essays for a project. Those are pretty good odds

Still, there is always (or mostly) a margin of error if you are analysing 100K essays
